The Moto X4 will be my very last Motorola phone until Lenovo sells them to a more capable company. If you only want to do like one year's worth of major phone updates... then fine... whatever. But I see absolutely no reason to just stop issuing security updates altogether. That's just lazy, and stupid, and dangerous.

But... not only that... This phone was supposed to be an upgrade to my Moto X2 (2014 edition). But I found (*find*) my X2 to be far more responsive. The camera... for instance... is faster. It's faster from the time you press the camera app until you actually get to take a photo. It's also faster at taking photos. It's even faster to review the photos once you've taken them. The sensor for turning on the screen if you pass your hand over it or just pick up the phone was also more responsive. 60% of the time the Moto X4 doesn't respond no matter WHAT I do with the phone. (Pass my hand in front of the sensor... pick the phone up... wave my fingers back and forth in front of the screen...) This is when I want to do something as simple as check the TIME without having to go so far as unlocking the screen. Extremely annoying.

Then there's the update thing...

I understand this phone was released in 2017 or whatever... But let's take Nokia as an example: EVERY nokia phone (DS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8) has the latest version of Android. ALL of them. And they're also all scheduled to receive Android OS 11. So I really don't see any reason why the X4 can't get updates. Hell... I'm running a rom with Android 10 on it just now. Works perfectly fine.

I got my X2 in 2016 so it was basically DOA. I think it might have maybe gotten Android OS 6 and a security update. My X4... which I got in 2018... did slightly better. It came with Android 8 and got 8.1 and Pie. (I don't really even count 8.1 as a full update... but whatever).

I know these are mid-range phones and we shouldn't expect too much... But with support like this... they also shouldn't expect me to buy their high-end phones or another mid-range phone only for them to drop support again.

I'd rather have a Pixel or a Nokia and KNOW that I'm going to get all the OS versions... or even get a Samsung and know that I'm at least going to get the security patches.

As it is... I'll keep updating my X4 for as long as people release new ROMs for it... but the very next time I feel it's time for an upgrade... I'm moving on.

/end rant

Well said

I had an original moto x (2013 I think) and I still have it as a backup, very good phone. I Got a moto x4 in 2018, and agree that they should have given us updates through at least 10. That's why I'm here actually, to see if I can figure out how to update to android 10. I may have to get my 13yr old son to help, I've never unlocked a boot loader and flashed a rom, and am not looking forward to the process . I suppose if I screw it up I can get a used Pixel or something.

Bought my wife a Pixel 3 a while back to replace her X4 when her power button broke. I revived it and now it is my daughters "tiny" tablet. This week I bought a refurbished Pixel 3 ($290) as well from Google and it is utterly amazing how much better the phone is.

My X4 will pass to my other daughter. It was a good phone and was a great, great value for the price (coupled with Google Fi) but it is just a little too laggy at this point.

Farewell Moto X4.
