I can't decide if I should hold onto my beloved xoom, or sell it while I can still get something out of it. I'm definitely intrigued by the nexus 10. I just wonder if jelly Bean will be the last version of android this device sees. It is starting to show its age a bit, although Team EOS 4.1.2 runs like a boss on mine. I do also like the fact that I have 4g as well. I'd like to see a nexus 10 and xoom size by side to better compare them.

I remain under the belief that "Google Experience Device" and "Nexus" are NOT the same. The Xoom is a GED - vanilla Android and a Honeycomb demonstration piece, but Motorola included 2 silly pieces of non-removable bloat ware in the form of games. Nexus products do not allow this. This further explains why the JB updates to the Xoom have been watered down, to make obvious that this is not a Nexus device. The absence of the "X" boot animation makes a clear statement to this fact.

No one is saying they're the same. The Nexus line is a branding that Google has given devices and, aside from the Nexus S (I believe), have been available directly from Google via the Play Store.

Google Experience Devices (notably the HTC G1 and the Motorola Xoom, wifi) are like beta tests. They get pure AOSP Android and showcase a new version of Android. In the Xoom's case, it was a beta test device for beta test software. Remember how Honeycomb was only available for tablets? That was their way of forcing a closed beta, i.e. only to tablet users. Google tested the waters with the Xoom + Honeycomb, then a year later, made changes/bug fixes/etc and packaged them upstream with gingerbread to give us a unified OS under Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich. This would have been a great time to launch a new 10" tablet, but they didn't for whatever reason (perhaps they were still hesitant on committing to the tablet market). Luckily, the Kindle Fire raked in sales on the 7" front and Google struck back.

The point I'm making here is that the Xoom was a beta test for tablets. It took a bit of time but then came the Nexus 7. We all knew that eventually they'd put out a 10" device to take over as the "premiere" 10" tablet.

Here's another thing. You see that beautiful 10" tablet? Thats the new Samsung Nexus 10 showing off some of the new features of Android 4.2. Previously, the Xoom held that duty. But now it has been replaced.

Uh, say what?
Google knew they were trashing the Honeycomb-style tablet interface altogether, so they totally mailed it in with the Xoom updates. 4.1.2 doesn't include the ability to expand notifications with one finger like you can on the NS, N7, and Gnex...there's no JB wallpapers in the honeycomb-style tablet launcher, but if you change your screen DPI in build.prop to enable phablet mode, they're in there. They didn't include the Sound Search widget like they did on the NS, N7, and Gnex, they used the ICS boot animation as well. Google totally mailed in the Xoom Jelly Bean update. Period. And who could blame them? They knew it wasn't going to be a feature device for very much longer, its sales were dismal, and they were completely redoing 10" tablet mode.

A quick note on the boot animation...I understand that Jelly Bean's stock boot animation is a multi-colored X representing the Nexus branding, and it would't make since to include that on the Xoom. That said, however, there WAS an alternate boot animation. The special edition N7s that were given away at I/O 2012 (the ones with white backs) originally shipped with an early Jelly Bean build, version 4.1, build JFN53N. JFN53N shipped with an alternate boot animation that resembles one of the Jelly Bean wallpapers. Those N7s got an OTA right out of the box to JRN84D, which is where that multi-colored X made its debut as the boot animation. You can find the alternate animation if you look around. They could very easily have included that boot animation for the Xoom since it was branding independent.

Here's what the original boot animation looked like on an original Nexus 7 with Jelly Bean JFN53N. This would have looked awesome on the Xoom! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgEI5V8lcts

Why not what?

The point I was making was that the Xoom's successor did not need to be a Motorola device. The Nexus 10 is the first 10" GED/Nexus device since the Xoom and that's why it is, IMO, the first successor to the Xoom. The Xoom 2 may have shared the name but that's about it. Again, the point I'm making is that we finally have a new 10" Google device. OEM is irrelevant. What matters is that it is a Google/Nexus device.
Well, sorry, didn't understand your point then. Now I understood and I totally agree with you! I just think that Xoom will still receive updates (at last the Android 4.2, because of the 2 years support policy), and maybe, a new Nexus can be a Motorola one, "not that I didn't like those new amazing Nexus"! Yea, the Xoom, was like an adoptive son for Google, Nexus 10 is the biological son (if you understand what I mean). Again, sorry for the misunderstanding, hope all is well now,

Amazing. Truly zero effort to include features on a fading tablet. In some ways it makes me optimistic that the 4.2 update (if delivered) will enable much more. Of course they could also just forget about the Xoom and hope we all order shiny new N10s.

As I mentioned above your comment, I believe we'll receive 4.2 because of the 2 years policy, just hope Google don't break their promise :)

Honestly I don't see why anyone would be excited about this if they already have a Android tablet? The only thing that really looks good is the screen. If you watched the video there is lag when the pages are turned in the magazine app. I could understand if this was done on older hardware but when brand new just released has lag then there is a problem. I think the nexus 7 is a better device.
This is just my opinion though. I have a 4g xoom that I use every day for work and play that does excellent. The only device that looks good enough to replace it is the galaxy note 10.1 if it ever comes to Verizon.

Pretty sure everything we've seen to this point is pre-production. Either way it's an upgrade for some of us for sure, just look at what I'm posting from! I'll be upgrading, no doubt.

?!

Ah, OK, I get it now- I thought you were being serious all this time ...! IHBT, sorry.

BTW, I'm running everything Google has made in the AOSP repos, and neither I nor the hundreds of users on our ROM really couldn't care less about the boot animation(s) or some missing wallpapers.

For me it shows lack of polish for what should be a finished product. The devil is in the details!

"Devil in the details" is exactly right- and if you go take a look at the thousands of lines of code changes and/or the changelogs between say, ICS, and JB 4.1.2, yet think a silly boot animation and a few wallpapers are real "details", I suggest your priorities are in the wrong place.

... I mean, really you guys?!

Yes, really. I would expect omissions and rough edges from an amateur developer, but this is from Google. I expect the full product, not "just enough".

hahaha

no....they tried that with the Xoom 2 and failed horribly.

The Xoom was the G1 of tablets; a google experience device, a pre-Nexus device. The Nexus 10 is to the Xoom as the Nexus One was to the G1.

Branding is irrelevant.
