Themed messaging apk

I love the aosp look to this phone but the texting app is UGLY. Any themed versions out there that I can't seem to find? Searched everywhere, that and the dialer are the only ugly ui elements to me, which is saying a lot for a (admittedly minimalistic) skinned UI

Well, I guess I'll have to take it upon myself. Benefit of being a grad students is i still get a sizeable winterbreak. I'll see what I'm capable of

Btw any help would be greatly appreciated.. I only know python, a bit of tcsh, matlab, and I obviously know Linux, adb, etc. Pretty sure some java skills are needed which I know not a thing about. I can't be the only one who finds the text app ugly as sin!
