I think I have figured out how to get my land line number ported over to Google Voice. Verizon has launched "Home Connect", a device that basically turns your home phone into a cell phone. You can port your home number over to this service, and add it to your Family Share plan for $9.99/mo. I purchased the device without a contract for 129.99, and when I activate it, my land line number will become a mobile number. I should then, be able to port the number over to GV. If Verizon allows their normal tryout period with the Home Connect, I will then return it, cancel my additional line, and BAM, my land line number is now my GV number. If Verizon doesn't allow the return, I will cancel the additional line, and sell the device on Craigslist, or eBay. I will report back to let you know how it goes.

"Port" meaning your home number becomes your Google Voice number? Not just forwarding the calls to your GV account?
Correct. You then need a new land line number so that Google voice can forward calls to your land line. The advantage to this is that you don't need to give people a new phone number. The disadvantage is that the number could take weeks to transfer which means nobody can reach you for that period of time (though it's usually just a day or two).

Your idea is basically the same as what a number of other people have been doing -- only they've been using pre-paid mobile phones instead of the Home Connect. You can port a landline to any mobile phone, so there's no specific need for that device.

Just wanted to report back, and let everyone know, that this method works as well. I was able to port my number over to GoogleVoice, and I returned the VZW Home Phone Connect device within the 14 days, so all it cost me was the $20 that Google charges to port the number. :)

One more follow up. If you guys haven't heard of the Obi110, check it out. I just received, and installed mine today. It works with Google Voice, and lets you make and receive phone calls right through your home handset. Your computer doesn't even need to be on.

There is an Obi app, that lets you use your data connection, on your mobile phone to make free calls as well, but I haven't had much luck with it, as it crashes when I open it on my phone.
