" they just really messed up the factory calibration"

No s***. After all the display hype I was stunned at the crap colors on this thing.
http://mashable.com/2012/07/24/google-nexus-7-display/

Thinking of returning and repurchasing in a few months.
I know it fun to try to create topics bashing Google but this molly wood type rant is silly.

So an expert found out the gray scale is off, the whole while tech reviews have glowing about this tablet and now all of sudden its crap........

I compared my N7 side by side on the same images in the article with my Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and what the author observes is real. The N7 crushes the first few percent of whites.

That said, the N7 vs the Tab 2 7.0 has:
- A much more pleasing color temperature: N7's warm white compared to the Tab's cool blue.
- No RGB moire where there is heavy fingerprinting. The N7 doesn't need cleaned very often compared to constantly cleaning the Tab 2.
- Higher resolution.
- Better overall performance etc etc yada yada yada.

Could the screen be better at not crushing whites? Probably. Is the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 better than the N7? Nooooope. The Tab 2 might not crush a few percent of whites, but the blue color cast and RGB moire when not constantly cleaned drive me nuts. Not to mention it is totally outclassed in every way by the N7.

I'll stick with my N7 thanks. ;) If the screen can be calibrated in an update, so much the better.

Perhaps there are gradeA displays out there...not mine.
I think folks are either in denial....or rationalize it out via the $199 price.
For the resolution purported on this, my display is greatly disappointing...and I know the difference.
The calibration statement resonated immediately...I do think that's what's going on.
If dev's can mod it, great.
Yeah, everyone is in denial... Colour rendition on my N7 is rather good. I'm a photographer and I notice immediately when colours are off. What amazes me is that some of the Android gradients, like Settings, are terrible. But gradients of well-made images look fine.

However, I do see the gamma is quite off, more around 1.0 than 2.2. Any colors higher than 249 blend into the background. 249 out of 255... So, yeah, non-issue.

And the OP link? You can not properly evaluate things in a random browser. Often they're only rendering in 16 bit. Use JustPictures, and make sure your image is good. I've seen some really crappy images used as justification to claim a screen is bad.

The Anandtech mini review had some display tests in it and they found that greens are a little undersaturated, I can definitely see this on mine and it is what makes cyans and yellows look a bit washed out. Just pull up this picture on your Nexus 7 and on any other device and compare...

To my eyes, this looks like they just need to do some recalibrating, hopefully we'll see an OTA soon with a fix for this, if not a custom ROM with better calibration.

As always, I want to help the N7 community. I offer to help the A500 and Razr communities as well. Standing offer- $5 for your hated N7 tablet. $5.25 is it's 16gb. You can put that toward a nice iPad. There's no way you should put up with such a horrible device!

Soneira is a generally unhappy person. He wrote on and on about how dishonest Apple was about their iPhone 4/4s screens, too.

I noticed the greens and yellows looked a bit washed out or pastel like too. I couldn't tell if cyan was or not. But it seems other colors like blue, red, and magenta looked fine.

Just out of interest I'm gonna grab my colorimeter and see how bad the Nexus 7 is, and I'll try and post some graphs for you guys. I don't have a top tier one, just a Spyder 4 Express, but it's still better than our eyes to determine just how far off the display is/isn't.

Any votes on which standard I should compare it to? sRGB or Rec.709?

I'm getting significant washout after playing video for a few minutes, way beyond the default level of white balance issue seen so far. If you're going to run a colorimeter test, yout might want to also test before/after a video played from the Play Movies app.

My Galaxy Tab 7 has a better display than the Nexus 7?

I just ordered my nex7 today and here's my 2 cents:

If the nexus 7 is capable of playing netflix videos without crashing every 5 minutes I am going to be a happy customer. I don't care about calibration.

Seriously.

Nobody cares about something Google will more than likely fix within a week.

And as for the Apple fanboys:

I paid $200 for a device with a quad core CPU, now go relaunch your springboard and make your payment installment. :)

I sincerely hope they are working on fixes for these things. I ordered two on July 3rd, but still waiting and just got another back ordered notice from JR. I don't mind waiting at all if it means when they come they will be flawless and possibly improved.

I've used several of these personally from friends that purchased them. Myself and all of them are very happy with the displays. I'm sure there's no doubt a few dud's left the factory, and people can argue all day that the green pigment may be slightly low or the blue may be slightly over the top, but at the end of the day, I know one thing - my display looks damn good. I don't mean "200 dollar good" or "low end tablet good". I mean quite simply... It. Looks. Damn. Good. :good:

I have an iPad 3 and a Nexus 7, and I just compared some images side-by-side on both. Honestly, I can't tell the difference. Color saturation and detail seems almost as good, with the iPad 3 getting the nod simply because it's higher resolution. Perhaps a professional photographer or designer could spot a difference that I don't see, but then again, I'm not a professional, so there you have it.

I'll say that the iPad 3 screen remains the best I've ever seen on a consumer-level device, tablet or otherwise. It really is excellent in all ways, and in particular text remains sharper than on the Nexus 7. However, I think the difference really isn't meaningful--text is plenty good enough on the Nexus 7, and as I mentioned I just can't see a difference on images. Let me add that I also compared the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" screen to the iPad's, and there's no comparison whatsoever. I've found the Nexus 7 screen to be MUCH better than the GT 2 7". Same with the Transformer Prime, and the Excite 10.

The screen washing out after video plays remains a problem, but it's easily fixed by just turning the screen off and then back on. Ultimately, I just can't see myself being terribly concerned about this "problem," because at least to my eyes I can't see it.

That damned dead pixel in the upper right-hand quadrant, now... That's a different story. :D

I brought this up in another thread but my 2 nexus 7's are toned differently. The 8gb has a warmer look with a yellowish tint on whites making it look more saturated vs my 16gb that has a cooler tint. Wish I didn't compare them side by side at times but the 8gb is going back anyway.

The nexus screen has a pinkish hue. While it does looks great solo, the whites are noticeable when comparing to other LCDs. Perhaps it was intentional and like the article states, the brightness is about 25% less then it should be (75% bright when using a 100% setting).

Perhaps it was to conserve battery. There are huge battery rewards between using 75% and 100%. Could it be software, probably. Can it be tweaked, probably. Is it a buzz kill, no. The screen looks great and more then surpasses its price point.

Bingo.

The fact is that, as with all mobile devices, there's a huge variation in individual displays. There is no factory calibration, so there's nothing for them to 'mess up'. It's just luck of the draw as to how far your display varies from the nominal values.

This is not a result of the Nexus being cheap. Take a look at the 59 page thread over on macrumors about the variations in the quality of the iPad 3 display that's supposed to be so good. This is a common problem that affects all mobile displays. Neither Android nor iOS has colour management baked into the OS. Spyder has released a proprietary solution for iOS that creates a colour profile which only works with their associated picture viewer app and I know supercurio made an attempt at calibration last year, but that seems to have stalled.

Hopefully they can patch it with firmware. I feel that my ipad 1 has better overall color reproduction. Maybe I'm spoiled by my galaxynexus. Awesome resolution on the 7 but bad washed out colors.

Hi. on mine I've installed the app screen adjuster as was hoping to up the saturation a touch but as it couldn't really do that, i have found that for my screen at least, it is too green, the effect of which is a yellowy washed out blue lacking vibe.

In the app I left green at zero and upped red to 10 and blue to 12 at the moment and pics look better for sure. I Also reduced the lowest brightness by 15 % for batt saving indoors. I'm pleased. Give it a try if colours or colors for you guys is off :)
