" they just really messed up the factory calibration"

I have an iPad 3 and a Nexus 7, and I just compared some images side-by-side on both. Honestly, I can't tell the difference. Color saturation and detail seems almost as good, with the iPad 3 getting the nod simply because it's higher resolution. Perhaps a professional photographer or designer could spot a difference that I don't see, but then again, I'm not a professional, so there you have it.
Could you visit this white saturation test page on your iPad 3 and Nexus 7 and compare the results?

On the iPad 3 I can just barely see the square 254. On the Nexus 7 the last visible is 249. So the white saturation is quite a bit worse on my Nexus 7. Even my Nook Color does much better, with 253 being visible.

The review seems to imply the problem is mainly at the brightest level. I'm not worried. Here's where I keep my brightness set to.

Pretty much where I always keep my brightness level, 40%. And it still looks washed out with whites over saturated. I noticed my brightness level really doesn't change the quality, using display tester or the site I linked above, the tests look the same at lowest brightness or maximum brightness.

Guys I just tried that white square test and got 253 with the screen adjuster app on at the settings green 0 red 12 and blue 14. With it off ie stock it was worse like you described,

Is counter intuitive that colour balance would affect it but it did.

Thought worthy of a mention

See my other post, the app 'screen adjuster' does fine job for now.

Drop the green level by raising blue and red and you should see improvement.. report back if so

The Anandtech mini review had some display tests in it and they found that greens are a little undersaturated, I can definitely see this on mine and it is what makes cyans and yellows look a bit washed out. Just pull up this picture on your Nexus 7 and on any other device and compare...

To my eyes, this looks like they just need to do some recalibrating, hopefully we'll see an OTA soon with a fix for this, if not a custom ROM with better calibration.
i LOVE this screen, i was lucky enough to recieve good unit, though now that I see this picture I clearly see the green is a bit washed out, red and blue are perfect, compared this with my monitor. but its really not the screen, this can be fixed software level which I know it will :))

Here is my Nexus 7 (on the left) compared to my Nook Color (on the right). White saturation shouldn't be that bad.
Using the same display tester, my saturation doesn't like look bad at all.

I realize now as I'm attaching it that my screen shot doesn't really show anything, but I have no complaints. I'm seeing clear stepping from about 003-251. I'd hardly describe that as washed out.

I have two Nexus 7s, both have the washed out look. I installed Screen Adjuster and did +10 to red and blue with green at 0. And it has helped with the white saturation test. And I think the colors overall look a touch better now.

Unfortunately colors in general still look washed out when compared to my Nook Color. So I still need Google to fix the underlying problem.

Thanks for the suggestion.

How many boxes can you see in the test? On mine I pretty much can't see the bottom row at all.

I can see all the squares on my nexus 7. As noted 254 is barely visible but I can discern the differences in the checkerboard pattern on that particular square.

Gah. So annoying I got two bad ones in a row. Would almost make me feel better to think they were all broken, haha. Guess I'll try another RMA then.

254 is barely visible for me which I believe should be the case. I am not lying and I have used the same image that people have post. I am in nicely lit room with my Nexus on auto brightness. I am totally stock and my screen is generally fine except the green which I tested using my iPad 3 side by side with my Nexus 7. If Google can fix the green and the strange wished out color after finish playing Google movies then I would be very happy with my display.

Can you test the white balance while the washed out post-movie haze is on-screen? Maybe we're all just experiencing different levels and durations of the same basic problem. If you get 249-250 after a video like the rest of us get constantly maybe there's some hope that it's a fixable firmware issue after all.

As you suggested I tried this test 3 times and I got different results every time. First time I was able to see 247 as the last, second time 200 was the only visible and the next box which is 244 was not visible so it was somewhere between 200 and 244, third time I got 245 as the last one. I then decided to repeat the test 4th time and I got the same result as second test i.e. 200 was way visible but 244 was not visible. After few seconds all the remaining boxes also came back and 254 is slightly less visible than what it was before but still very much visible.

Okay, so if I take these results and feed them into the scientific result machine I can confirm that BROKEN.

Yes, it is broken. The colors are washed out after playing movies. Other than movies the color are OK except the green. The blacks are not as deep black which is understand able as being an LCD panel not led panel like my SGS3 however their is something wrong with the device probably gamma or something as it looks washed out. My iPad 3 also has cooler color tone as all apple devices do but it does not look washed out. Nexus screen has warmer colors and still look washed out. During movies the colors looks fine. The color in games is also close to what I get on iPad 3 which is fine for me.
