So is anybody getting any 5G so far?
So far, mostly NO. I live in a suburb of Chicago that is supposed to be immersed in the new T-Mobile 5G. I normally get 20-40 Mbps with my 4G S10 Plus. At my home, I do not get a 5G indicator and my speeds are unchanged. About 2 blocks away, I get the 5G indicator on my phone and speeds DROP to 5 Mbps. I spent quite some time on the phone Saturday with T-Mobile Tech Support as they , too, say I should have it. I am supposed to get the results back tomorrow from the ticket I submitted. It is as though the towers near my home are not 5G activated in spite of what the map clearly shows. That is not a good sign.

This phone was purchased specifically so that I could get a feel of how 5G actually responds in the areas where my clients reside (I manage IT for clients). Today I drove around the city and took measurements and actually drove to some neighboring towns to take some speed measurements and I will continue to do this for a couple of days more throughout this week as I visit client sites. Most were the same, 30 Mbps or so, perhaps some hit 40. Not much more than what I have seen in the past. The other side of my town has traditionally had higher speeds before, with 70-100 Mbps observed in those areas before. Nothing changed today.

The biggest surprise was traveling to a town 50 miles to the west that according to the map was supposed to have 5G. Nothing. No 5G symbol in any of the places I tried and there were a number over about a quarter of the town. This town has traditionally had fast speeds for some time (100 Mbps easily obtained in certain areas that I have tested in the past). Still fast today, but no 5G. So I left to get back home. Just as I was getting on the expressway, I stopped for gas, quickly checked and I HAD 5G. And this was real 5G as I would like to see it. 215 Mbps. But that was the first and only time I saw anything approaching fast speeds. Mind you, I DON'T EXPECT THOSE KINDS OF SPEEDS WITH LOW BAND 5G. But I was hoping to see SOMETHING. My wife's last year's 4G LTE LG G7 is getting exactly the same speeds that my fancy new Note 10 + 5G is getting. So, SO FAR, my recommendation to my clients is to not spend a dime on 5G. Not yet at least. Not seeing additional speed and not seeing additional reach. Perhaps there is some shaking out to do and that will change. But from what I have seen (or not seen) to this moment is very disappointing. Obviously YMMV and I hope it does!
