Damn, I got two 4G LTE's on launch day but I prematurely parted with them. Well, I got my hands on one today (still a bada$$ device) but I feel like king nOOb getting nervous about unlocking and rooting. What are the pros/cons of unlocking the bootloader? My One M7 has it unlocked, supercid, etc but I can't remember what unlocking the bootloader benefits.... Flashing kernel zips? Any help is appreciated, JC

You need it to flash custom recovery.

Hit the top link in my sig. Bootloader unlocking allows you to install a custom recovery so you can flash ROM's, etc.

Well I first flashed (well its still flashing) the RUU JB43 4.1.3.651.4 and it says that it takes about 10 minutes and I am going on 30+! I thought I would do this first so I didn't have to potentially unlock the bootloader twice. My other issue is I may need an "all in one" because my Unlock_code.bin was a fail on first attempt with fastboot

Ok, I am quoting myself which is terrible but I was struggling to get things straight and this tool fixed everything up in 5 minutes and I am golden now! Many thanks!

The tool worked perfectly up to the point that I tried to gain root. Once I clicked the Flash Supersu the application stopped working and now does not recognize that my phone is connected. HTC manager recognizes the phone, Im in debugging. I uninstalled the adb drivers and reinstalled the whole tool but nothing...any ideas how I screwed this up?

I had the same issue. There were a couple things that I had to do manually using ADB and fastboot. In your case, TWRP will automatically install SuperSU for you. Just boot into recovery then go to Reboot - System. TWRP will say something like, "You do not have super user access, would you like to install SuperSU?". Say yes and you're golden.

PLEASE Help with trying to do custom rec and needs root. USB problems HTC Evo 4G Lte

Just an FYI CWM does not play nice with the EvoLTE :D
Hi, Sorry- I'm a nubie and this may be long but I can't figure what I did wrong. I'm having a heck of a time in stage 2 (Custom rec) and gaining root. 1st set of instructions for getting the Token went fine and I registered myself and it seemed to open the bootloader because the Evo restarted and had a warning message about going on to open it for supersu- so I figured it was all set to do #2 step and make a custom recovery and it started ok and did some rebooting and restarted BUT THEN it just got STUCK on the bootloader screen (no battery to do a pull and the vol up and down did not move the menu options for changing any bootloader options like say fastboot.. it just seemed to be stuck/froze. I finally got it to reboot trying different botton sequences demonstrated by others on youtube thank heavens. I suppose I'm either just that dumb to try to figure out when to let go or something really was froze..?lol, but after a few trys I got it to reboot. Nothing was wiped and it seemed like normal. I thought the data would be wiped. I replugged to my pc's usb port and tried to just go on to the Root procedure. That started out ok too...it did load Supersu on the internal card (there was NO ext SD card cuz this phone was has no history of orig. owner. It went thru quite a few hands and my son said if I wanted it for a extra phone for rooted apps and wifi texting/calling extra that it was still in good shape to use. It has no data plan. I used the windroid univ. toolkit during the time it had no ext sd. Could that of caused a problem? So lastly, it said I was rooted because the program went through the steps but I did root check app and it's NOT. I tried to install Supersu from the new sd card but it won't let me-says no root. So here's where I'm stuck-I thought I'd hook it up to the Win un tool prog again and now when I plug in the usb it can't find drivers now! I tried many things to reload the usb/abd drivers and NOTHING works! I even tried to change usb format to MTP device and all it can do is see folders. When I try to do a 'fix drivers' it gets to the stage and then pulls up a big white page saying in the corner 403 Forbidden....what the?? I've read something about a update the phone may have done called HBoot? The phone is continually giving errors with data etc...it won't even let me load google voice or dialer. Please-please, ANY help would be greatly appreciated--or if no one has time to guide me through this please send me to some forums/help guides that can help me reset the usb drivers-I'm not sure if I have S-off or not... p.s. I rooted my Gal S3 with NO problem so I was frustrated when things went so bad on this nice HTC. THANKS a TON :)

Maybe provide more specific information.

You mention the problem was at custom recovery. Which custom recovery were you trying to install, and how did you try to install it?

You might be able to just install the custom recovery using another method. I successfully installed the TWRP custom recover which has been customized by captian throwback. It's a special version that can understand the EVO 4G LTE, so maybe you used an ordinary version that was not customized for this specific phone?

HTC Evo 4g Lte TWRP stuck recovery and rooting problems

Hi and THANKS so much for the advice! I'm such a NEWB!! I'm learning but not as fast as I'd like. The Samsung has a lot more support than the Evo does. Anyways, I'm in the middle of TWRP software right at the moment-I went to check if I was unlocked and if S was off or on and the TWRP software came up-so that must of been automatically loaded from windroid. I am showing Unlocked--here is my bootloader details:
Bootloader menu:
*****Tampered****
*****Unlocked****
Jewel PUT SHIP S- ON RL
HBOOT 2.09. 0000
RADIO- 1.13. 11. 0830
OpenDSP-v31. 1. 0. 45. 0815
eMMC boot
Oct 18th 2012, 15:46 : 20

Can you help me figure out how I can get twrp working and find a ROM that I can put on (I hate bloatware and would really like a fast Rom with no goodies on it. I have 2 big apps I need to keep running a lot and don't care to get all the other apps-this isn't my main cell phone. I love it though and who knows-maybe I will change up if this goes well.

My computer isn't responding to the MTP device driver...I tried my other win 7 computer in my office and it looked like it was going to recognize my HTC and then--no go...same MTP device software was not successfully installed.
So where do I go from here? I told the TWRP to 'back up' and it did but I have no OS/Rom to flash and not even sure I can get the computer to even let me use TWRP. I'm using a mobile TWRP that the winDroid put on it. Supersu never installed either. Not rooted.

Is there a download link for the special version of TWRP PC version that is for my HTC EVO??

THANKS BUNCHES!!! So sorry to bug you! I really appreciate any help :)

The above is an image file, so it will require fastboot to flash. I'm not sure if the Toolkit allows you to select a custom recovery image to flash. If not, I'm sure a search will yield results on how to fastboot flash a recovery.

And if you're having driver issues, make you you've installed the latest HTC Sync Manager (if you don't want to use the software, you can immediately uninstall it afterwards - the HTC drivers will remain).

Yeah if you are unlocked and able to get into TWRP already on your phone (from what it sounds like you were able to boot into and use TWRP and its backup functionality), then it's just a matter of making sure you have this special version of TWRP covnenently provided by Captain. So, you simply have to do again whatever you did to get the first version of TWRP on your phone, except use this special version. Just redo the recovery installation portion, but use this TWRP version.

Then, you can just manually copy the ROM zip files to your sdcard and install them using TWRP, and it will now work instead of failing. I think you are almost there.

Hi Captain :)
I sure had a hard time getting my reply to go-it kept trying to give me a image to verify but it never loaded..java maybe?? I'm on another laptop this time. I've been trying to contact u since 5a. Yesterday, I worked on trying to get my main PC drivers (win 7 64bit) and windows updates fixed because some of the problems are coming from Sprint/HTC and my unlocked bootloader. and possibly a accidental HBoot update after the Windroid software was run that I may have given permission to without realizing the security is now stopping me from using or being recognized as HTC or sync..abd drivers and sdk drivers. I even tried to restore my PC to a early time before downloading the Evo and any software from it but it is not working either. I tried windows update but there are a few critical updates that won't finish installing. I've scanned for bugs and I'm at a loss now how to get the Evo connected to the PC to even run your new Twrp CD...hey- how do I run it? Should I burn it literally to a CD with say Astroburn --? Or do I just open the zip and install the CD software? Sorry for such dumb questions. I guess I still got a LOT to learn..lol and I super dooper appreciate all you have done already--and KingFatty also has tried to help me. You guys are GREAT! One last question...I have this new micro usb converter to usb plug in thing right to my phone. It reverses so the phone can connect say a mouse or just that it has a usb port (like a 'on the go' plug) it wasn't cheap due to it also came with a 16g built in flashdrive. The package did say something to the effect that it's great for Rom Flashing..so not sure but could this little bugger maybe get me connected some other way??? Can't wait to hear back!! Thanks TONS!!! :D P.S. T-H-A-N-K-S again for the new TWRP cd file!!! I really appreciate it Cap!

You keep saying CD file. It's an image file. Once you get fastboot working, you can fastboot flash it. Someone else will have to help you with those details. I only popped in to provide that link and some basic feedback. Seems like you have some reading to do.

Hi again KF :)
I'm still not positive that I can do that though. When it comes to getting a OS to install from Recovery (that Captain sent me the CD image file) and I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to get that software to install on my phone when I can't get my PC to recognize my Evo...I'm stumped on that and I've tried all my 5 PC's to see if one would work in ANY usb port. Windows won't install them and I manually tried and it didn't work either-so yesterday I tried and tried to uninstall it all and reinstall it all and tried windows update and it ended up in me doing a Full PC Recovery back to feb 3rd. I ran into so many windows update, java and update fails now that I'm frustrated :(

,

I used the software 'Windroid Universal Toolkit' latest v2.1 and would sure love to use it again. This program also is suppose to root the Evo as well but it never worked for me. It did open the bootloader (unlock BL but the S is still ON), so the program has it own version of TWRP he had for the HTC. My exact device was on the pull-down list of phones once you launch it and it says it was compatible and it loaded the drivers also first thing--plus found my device. I did have the USB debugging checked in the dev. options. Now--when I launch it and usb plug in my phone (same spot it worked last time--and I've tried them all). I know one thing tho-maybe u can shed some light on this..after the unlocking and code was finished and verified working--an important admin type message came popping up on my phone (after the first reboot on it's own--wish I would have wrote it down to tell u what it said~geez...but it was a warning type -security in nature and it asked if I wanted to proceed with caution to click 'yes' or 'no' button..and I had to use the top power button on my phone to move the option to yes. I wonder if I should have said no..??? Could this be my whole problem--? Is Sprint or HTC blocking me now from connecting due to a security breach I accepted? I sure wonder cuz then after when it was starting the TWRP #2 section I heard the PC/usb little windows notification 'deedoop' that happens either when u connect a usb device or unconnect a usb little noise, and it happened something like 5+ times and messages were saying down in the tray 'cannot find drivers--or device not detected. I ran the usual windows to install it and it tried numerous times and kept aborting. That was the last successful time my Evo has ever successfully connected to any PC. Same noise and same messages happen on all my computers. It's format must of changed and windows is unable to install the correct drivers. I hope I'm making some sense explaining this...Any advice is SO appreciated!

If Cap's new TWRP image file is requiring me to make a CD to run as software on my PC which requires a usb connection between the both--then I don't have anymore ideas on how to get this phone working on usb anymore....I even changed one of the usb ports to MTP format but nothing worked wither. .........OR...hummm....is there any other way I can get the two working?? I agree with you for sure--once I get TWRP to flash a recovery Rom and then what do I use to get root?
So sorry for all the bugging :-/ I'm gunna owe you guys ;)

Do you have an SD card and a card reader?

EDIT: If you put the attached zip onto an SD card, put it in the EVO and boot into the bootloader (HBOOT), it should pick up the zip and install recovery for you.

Again I reiterate that there is no CD-making involved here. I think the way Windows handles .img files is confusing you.

SuperSU Install Issue

I decided after some back and forth to keep my Sprint EVO 4g LTE a while longer. Compared with the new Android phones out there I didn't see much benefit that updating the SD card and installing a custom ROM couldn't solve. And besides I didn't want to get into another 2yr commitment with Sprint, let along pay hundreds for a new phone. I figured too with rooting my wife’s LG LS720 how hard could be? Well after some time last night and several hours today I'm stumped!

I initially tried rooting via the command prompt and Flashboot method about year ago and ran into problems and so put it aside and told myself "I'll wait until some better instructions or guide come out and give it another shot." Well this time I stumbled across the WinDroid Univ Android Toolkit and figure I'd give a try.

Despite some initial hiccups on my part, I was able to get to the point of unlocking my bootloader, installing TWRP 2.8.30 recovery, and obtaining what I thought was my SU root. While in TWRP and hitting reboot, system and choosing to install SU and rebooting, I get the following error in red letters: "E: Failed to get default context and file mode for storage files.", followed by MTP enabled and then saying it is loading the SU script.

Once booted up and going into Apps, I found no SU app. So I tried the install process once again and obtained the same results. I even went to Google Playstore and downloaded SuperSU and installed it and then received the following error message: "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem." However in TWRP file explorer I see that the SU directory is created and what "appears" to be all the appropriate directories, files and the apk listed.

I did a google search re the red lettered message in TWRP and came across a thread at the Android Stack Exch and found that another TWRP user reverted back to 2.8.0.1 and found that the error message went away. Would this error message be tripping me up? Should I revert to an early Windroid toolkit version and if so which one? I tried too, installing the SuperSU 1.94 zip file via TWRP and had no luck there either. I do have S-ON. Do I need to be S-OFF? Finally, I do have a SanDisk UltraPlus 32GB micro SD HCI card installed. Should I remove the card?

As for specs the following are of my phone:
HTC Sence 4.5.,
EVO 4.1.1.
Jewel PVT SHIP S-ON RL
SW Ver: 3.17.651.97IORD
HBOOT 2.09
Radio: 1.31.11.0830
Open DSP: 131.11.0.45.0815
eMMC-boot

I have Windows 8.1 desktop and Windows 7.0 laptop. I started out using the desktop a Sony Vaio A-n-1 but was having USB connection issues so switched to using my laptop.

Thank you in advance for your time and any helpful instruction you can provide.
Bennett

I recently rooted my Evo a little over a month ago, so I'll explain what I did. There are some work-arounds, so don't think that everything will be a cake walk. I also had difficulties with WinDroid, but it is still a great help.

1. Use latest RUU 4.13.651.4 to update your HBoot and partition layout (Newer ROMs need this)
2. Use WinDroid to get HTC Dev unlocked
3. Install TWRP (I did it via fastboot because WinDroid wouldn't for some reason)
4. From TWRP, reboot the system and it will prompt you to install SuperSU, do it (If it still gives you issues, which it shouldn't, download the SuperSU zip to your SD card and use TWRP to install it)
5. Power up your Evo and finish installing SuperSU.
6. Run RumRunner to get S-Off (If you plan on flashing new radios, get S-Off)
7. Create a nandroid
8. Use your newly rooted device as is, or flash a new ROM.

SuperSU Install Issue

Thanks for the reply. I'll give theses steps a try and let you know what success I have.

I came across the shipped ROMs site with the following listed Jewel ROMs

RUU_JEWEL_CL_ICS_40_Sprint_WWE_1.13.651.1_Radio_1.02.12.0427_NV_SPCS_2.28_003_release_259183_signed.exe

RUU_JEWEL_CL_ICS_40_Sprint_WWE_1.12.651.2_Radio_1.02.11.0423_2_NV_SPCS_2.28_003_release_257970_signed.exe

RUU_JEWEL_DD_ICS_40_HTCCN_CHS_CT_1.27.1401.1_R4_Radio_1.08.40.0601_NV_CT_2.35_001_release_265471_signed.exe

RUU_JEWEL_CL_ICS_40_Sprint_WWE_1.22.651.3_Radio_1.05.11.0606_NV_SPCS_2.45_003_release_268323_signed.exe

Would it be the 1st one listed that I use or there a different site that I should be going to?
Thanks again

Use the TWRP I just posted, and download and install the latest SuperSU zip and you should be fine.
