Thanks for the reply. I'll give theses steps a try and let you know what success I have.

I came across the shipped ROMs site with the following listed Jewel ROMs

RUU_JEWEL_CL_ICS_40_Sprint_WWE_1.13.651.1_Radio_1.02.12.0427_NV_SPCS_2.28_003_release_259183_signed.exe

RUU_JEWEL_CL_ICS_40_Sprint_WWE_1.12.651.2_Radio_1.02.11.0423_2_NV_SPCS_2.28_003_release_257970_signed.exe

RUU_JEWEL_DD_ICS_40_HTCCN_CHS_CT_1.27.1401.1_R4_Radio_1.08.40.0601_NV_CT_2.35_001_release_265471_signed.exe

RUU_JEWEL_CL_ICS_40_Sprint_WWE_1.22.651.3_Radio_1.05.11.0606_NV_SPCS_2.45_003_release_268323_signed.exe

RUU_JEWEL_CLICS_40_S_Sprint_WWE-2.13.651.1_Radio_1.12.11.0809_NV_SPCS-2.45_003_release_277028_signed.exe

Would it be the 1st one listed that I use or there a different site that I should be going to?
Thanks again
The 4.13.651.4 RUU can be found in the link below:

Greetings! I'm a PC user, zero experience with the backend of android and smaller devices. I recently had to replace the screen of my EVO design with boost, and the phone just isn't the same.
I have a EVO 4G that came with my Sprint contract. I would like to root the phone to transfer it to my Boost Mobile account.
Will this software enable me to do that? Is it pretty straighforward to the point that I can do it myself, with little experience with phones? It's a nice phone, I'd be very disappointed to brick it!

Device Failed Enumeration

Hi everyone, been reading here for awhile but this is my first post. Have a lot experience rooting phones and a B.S. in Computer Science, so not exactly a noob just so you're aware. I've read every reply to this thread, I've researched, read, and watched videos for hours and so this is my last resort. I need your help. I am attempting to root an HTC EVO 4G LTE (Sprint). I have used the walkthrough posted earlier in this thread to install the HTC Sync Manager & Drivers then uninstalled HTC Sync but left the Drivers installed; I've got Java and the SDK packages installed. When the phone is turned on, I can use a command prompt and "adb devices" lists the phone as HT27HS414689. "fastboot devices" command lists nothing.

Here's the main problem: when I turn the phone off and take it into Fastboot mode, my Device Manager no longer recognizes the device. It shows the following: Unknown USB Device (Device Failed Enumeration) & within the properties of that entry, the description states the following:

"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
A request for the USB BOS descriptor failed."

And of course, when I use Command Prompt to issue the command: fastboot oem get_identifier_token, it simply shows: <waiting for device> --- and nothing ever happens.

I'm running Windows 8.1. From what I can tell, this seems to be some type of communication error between Windows 8.1 and the Fastboot mode of HTC devices. I have disabled Windows Driver Signature Enforcement. I have edited the registry in an attempt to override the USB BOS request.... I'm getting nowhere. I cannot even get WinDroid itself to give me the Token ID that I need to unlock the bootloader of this device. I am officially stuck guys so that's all the information I can think of for now..... Does anyone have any suggestions of something that I've not tried or something that I'm maybe overlooking?

Please help!!!!! Thanks.

Did you disable your antivirus software? If not, that might help. I've so far been able to avoid Windows 8, so I'm not much help.
Yes. I don't think it has anything to do w/ the Antivirus software though. I'm fairly certain that it's a Windows 8.1 issue and I'm really just wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and come up w/ a solution. Microsoft has a KB article & corresponding download stating it'll fix it, but I even tried to install that -- and it says "this is not a valid update for your system" lol makes no sense.

Uninstall all of the HTC Drivers from the PC. Reboot the PC. Put the device in fastboot mode and connect to the computer and let it install the drivers automatically. Use a USB 2.0 port if you can - 3.0 might require updated USB drivers for the PC.

Did what you suggested. Rebooted; phone in Fastboot mode. Device manager still showed: Unknown USB Device (Device Failed Enumeration). Allowed it to search online and it came back with "The best driver software for your device is already installed." I didn't really see how that would've made any difference but I tried it anyways... thx for the suggestion but I guess I'm just gonna give up because there doesn't seem to be a solution.

Only other option is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49131915

I suggested what I did because I noticed that on a clean install, Windows 8.1 picked up the proper fastboot driver for my device as long as I didn't install the HTC Drivers first. It might be too late now, since you already installed them, though.

But the manual solution in the thread I linked should work. Just make sure you check for the files in the folder manually, otherwise you'll have issues with using any USB input devices when you reboot the PC.

That links to the same Microsoft KB download that said doesn't apply to my PC. I also tried the usb.zip and attempted to install manually, but my Device Manager returns with "The best driver software for your device is already installed" this is impossible

There's a script you run that puts the files where they need to go. Essentially it replaces the 8.1 versions with 8.0 versions. You have to read the whole thing and follow the "old (dirty)" instructions.

I stand corrected. After replacing those files w/ the old versions, I rebooted and the HTC EVO 4G LTE was FINALLY recognized by Windows 8.1 while in Fastboot mode. Then, I was able to get the identifier token so I could unlock it thru HTCDev. I then flashed ClockworkMod Recovery and used that to install SuperSU and voila, it is ROOTED! SUCCESS!!!!!
@Captain_Throwback -- THANK YOU, for directing me to that site w/ the old USB Drivers. I was stuck at that point for at least a good 12 hours, and you were instrumental in my success. I appreciate your help immensely!!!!! :D

Glad to hear it. But before you break anything further I recommend you update your ClockworkMod to TWRP as CWM has some issues on the EVO.

It's already possible that you've corrupted your misc partition. Where did you get CWM from?

I tried TWRP first but it wouldn't respond. So that's why I went looking for CWM because I've used it on plenty of Samsung Devices. I found the one for the HTC EVO LTE @ https://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager -- I was just rooting it for someone else for a little cash, and they have SU access so they're happy. The device didn't seem to be giving me any problems but I just gave it back to it's Owner. Hopefully no major issues lol

Since the device isn't getting anymore updates, it should be fine. Not sure what you mean by it wouldn't respond, but I have the latest TWRP linked here in case it becomes an issue at some point in the future. I haven't seen any issues reported with TWRP lately.

Do you have an SD card and a card reader?

EDIT: If you put the attached zip onto an SD card, put it in the EVO and boot into the bootloader (HBOOT), it should pick up the zip and install recovery for you.

Again I reiterate that there is no CD-making involved here. I think the way Windows handles .img files is confusing you.
Hi again Captain,
Thank you so much and to KingFatty as well for your guidance in this TWRP program and Root assistance. I finally got my Evo rooted! It took more reading and it was kind of a weird process that worked...I'd read others that did similar methods that failed so this was quite a blessing ;)
To answer your question--I didn't have a sd card--I had 5 SD CARDS!!! lol! and 2 card readers besides. I also have the usb jig and that also has a 32 gig drive that you can transfer files via usb device. Anyways--- Here's what I did if anyone else wants to know (who may be a noob like me!)
1. Windows 7 (64bit) running Windroid Universal toolkit to unlock bootloader and get code--then it installed a version of TWRP which didn't finish installing recovery or Su/Root.
2. Downloaded your special Twrp recovery for jewel version for the Evo to my PC-(Thank U again Cap!!). I tried to run fastboot manually (from phone's Bootloader menu) so I could use my sd card for the transfer but it would not move the menu options to allow the fastboot to start-so I hit reboot to recovery. I had this happen one other time. Not sure why so this is where I tried it a weird way
3. After the Evo rebooted, I plugged it into my PC/usb port 2.0 and set the phone's usb debugging on. Disabled PC antivirus or any other programs and removed any usb devices.
4. Opened/ran the Windroid un.TK program. It found my device online and the drivers for my evo were recognized (Finally!!) and I clicked on TWRP recovery...which booted the phone then into TWRP menu. The windroid said 'fastboot' and stayed open on fb while I ran TWRP virtual buttons on my phone (not on the Windroid menu buttons).
4. I was able to mount my ext. sd card using TWRP menu on phone (new 16g card that was not allowing me to access from the phone's storage menu.)
5. I was then able to Flash install the new jewel recovery file on the phone. The phone then rebooted and a message came up to inform me that I didn't have Su installed and did I want TWRP to install it...of course! PHONE ROOTED now and su installed and rootchecker app says I'm rooted. :)

I'm not sure what really happened though because the program would not work last time so I think getting the phone in FB via Windroid sp that I could install the right twrp recovery was the key....I needed BOTH programs together--this way I didn't have to do any adb commands--the windroid did them for me but the windroid recovery alone does not work on my evo--but thanks to your remarkable work--it worked great!

Now---for the next dilemma tho--- :( I am still S-OFF and the more reading I do the more frustrated I have become....evidently I may have the "only 'software 3.17 /Radio 1.13/ HBoot 2.09 / Android v.4.1.1 'version' of Evo that says 'UNKNOWN' way to achieve S-Off. My phone specs fit all the same info below but I don't have a clue if opening the bootloader prior to RUU latest update may have wrecked it for me--since I was on and may still be on--official firmware when I did that?
Here's a DUMB noob question (sorry) How do I know which Rom I have or if I can use RR?

OTA Firmware 3.17.651.4 2.09.0000 1.13.11.0830 4.1.1 Jelly Bean October 2, 2013 'unknown' way
RUU 3.17.651.4 2.09.0000 1.13.11.0830 4.1.1 Jelly Bean October 02,2013 use 'Rumrunner'

After installing the jewel file - my phone booted normal and looked like nothing had changed--all files same except now rooted with Su. It still reads tampered/S-on (I did not do any wipe or Fact. reset while in windroid/Twrp program during rooting--I was too nervous to do that in case I would receive a automatic HTC update and then it may relock my bootloader for good..I read that can happen running official OS?? True?
I really hope to put a ROM on (one of your's) but while reading the thread it appeared to me that I would need S-Off to load any descent ROM's without bloatware and to customize. I don't need any of the Sprint whoha bloatware~that's a lot of why I wanted root. I prefer a smooth/fast/ clean type Rom that's easy to customize so I can run only a few important apps. This is not my main phone but it will get used a lot -I don't care about the Sprint stuff other than I'd like to wifi tether esp. and use google voice/dialer.
Do I need updated Radios? Here's the fact sheet--and I would really appreciate any help with S-off and a ROM suggestion PLEASE :D I've read an entire Evo Guide about the Hboot and S-off and it really isn't making sense to me because there is too many variations of this phone so nothing seems streamline like it was with my Samsung. I never had to ask a question during any of the rooting/flashing roms. I used Odin and it went well. I've done 3 samsungs. This HTC is........grrrrr...lol

Thanks to anyone who can give me any help. Bless all you talented XDA Dev's!!!

Hi Captain. I am trying to unlock my bootloader but I am not having any luck. I tried many things including what the "dirty" instructions and I cant seem to get my pc to recognize my evo 4g lte when its in fastboot mode. Are there any suggestions?

I am on Win 8.1 64bit.

Maybe describe your current phone status (what versions of everything like HBOOT, recovery etc.) and the steps in painful detail. Like:

1. disconnect phone from everything
2. boot phone by holding power button and volume up
etc. etc. ... to the point where you connect the USB cable and do whatever on the computer.

Maybe that way we can notice if anything is odd.
