TOWELROOT

When I download this app, I get all kinds of virus warnings. When I DO save it and try to send it to my S3 via email (which I'm now VERY leery of doing), Gmail will not let me. Can someone tell me what the heck is going on and how to stop this Knox stuff?

TIA

Eset Antivirus reports tr.apk not as virus or trojan but as towelroot exploit. And it describes content of this application very well. It's absolutely reasonable that antiviruses detecting exploit's pattern block it. If you put this exploit into malware owner of infected phone are in big trouble. No flashing from recovery, no command line stuff, you get root access just by launching wrong app. You have to be aware of the risk.

I just used towelroot to root my S4 Mini (Verizon SCH-I435). I would like to remove some of the blotware on my phone. Is there a list of apps that can be safely removed?

GT-I9192 with 4.4.2 KitKat Build xxxNG2

after updating my gt-i9192's firmware to xxxng2 (russian) 4.4.2 kitkat, tried to root using latest version of towelroot. bad shot, no go; root was not achieved. since the warranty of this phone is gone anyways, i decided to use the cf-auto root method by chainfire. voila,i have root and now the phone is rocking with slimmed firmware after freezing all samsung bloatware apps. so far so good...:highfive: :good: :D

TowelRoot app returns "Device is'nt supported" on I9192 4.4.2 . I rooted mine with CWM and tripped KNOX. Totally worth tripping it to remove the bloatware from samsung.

Well i am rooted to! This is the best way to root your s4 mini with kk. So I do not know if the System Status - custome was modified after rooting or after installing supersu and busybox. Or after i flash the kk over jb orange branded. But the questione is if i lost the warranty?
I thik that reflashing with kk or jb oro will change to official againe.

Thanks to D4nielC we can change System Status to Official. Do this steps. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157&highlight=system+status&page=379
You mean this post? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53737912&postcount=3742
Mind that using your browser URL will not work for anyone who has changed the order of post or posts/page.

I wonder what the described procedure shall help here, except that you get "official" for a clean system with just Towelroot freshly run?
  • Did you re-try this with your device?
  • Once you add busybox or other changes to system (like getting SuperSU as system app) - will it not revert to "custom" again?
Mind that one of advantages of being root is to clean up the /system partition from bloatware...
Don't care much for the "official" as long as KNOX stays intact - and so the warranty. You can also use Wanam Xposed module to get this showing "official" in the settings panel, obviously not during boot.

So if after i v had the sys status to custome the only thing to do was to rerun towelroot?
I try to stay with knox intact as wel, and in my minimal search that was the first method that i found
The wanam methode was not succesful where i searched first.
I wanted to set sys state to official and i am not the only one that did not know that.
I am still learning man. Caz' u learn all your life!

Wait for 4.4.2 for your country or install manually. Then it should work unless later distributed 4.4.2 get the kernel fixed for the exploit used in towelroot.

Sent from my GT-I9195 using XDA Free mobile app

Kernel: 3.4.0-2340422 [email protected] #1 Sat Dec 21 01:33:54 KST 2013
If u update to 4.4.2 it will be possible

Can you install cwm via odin after using towelroot? so i can use cwm recovery in flashing new roms?
You can "root" your device via ODIN getting a new recovery on the device already ever since. This does break the KNOX safety and you get rid of your warranty. KNOX protects/safeguards the bootloader, the Kernel and Recovery partition. If any of these are altered - KNOX is tampered.

The unique capability of the towelroot is that you need NOT install a new CWM but can root with "onboard" methods. This gives you root access on the running device and so still has the KNOX stying intact. This so still prevents a private Kernel or a private Recovery (CWM, TWRP). Depending on the ROM (the /system partition mostly) you may be able to change to another, but this much depends on what the ROM needs as mandatory parts.
So "towelroot" is perfect for those who are happy with the Samsung kernel and just want to manipulate the /system partition (so e.g. de-bloat).

So flashing cwm or custom recovery trips knox? I thought knox will be tripped if we root with cf-auto root. So flashing cwm also trips knox. Just to clear things. Sorry for the noob questions

CF-autoroot must tamper kernel (i doubt) or recovery to get root rights to the device. You may want to find out how that works if you like. The idea about KNOX protection is to make sure that the very basics of the device stay a "safe" environment for company trustworhty environments. So it protects Kernel and Recovery.
