Hi ckpv5,

Thanks for a great, informative post.

I'm a total newbie to Android having just switched from an iphone. I got a HTC One M8, and everything has been working beautifully until I tried to update to Lollipop, when halfway through it stalled and just got stuck in an infinite boot loop. Apparently HTC support want nothing to do with it since the IMEI signals it was a "demo model"

Anyway, my only choice was to get involved myself - I've since successfully unlocked bootloader, and have been following your steps. Installed TWRP 2.8.3.0, since my OS version on bootloader says "3.28.401.9"

However, going through your steps I don't know which TWRP backup to download (in your posts #2 and #3). My HBOOT says 3.19.0.0000, OS is 3.28.401.9, and the CID gives me "11111111", and MID is "0P6B10000".

Please help!!

Thanks so much
Mark
I don't post EU version before (only recently) because usually we can find EU WWE backup in many threads. And some prefer to use RUU when they have a S-Off device. But for S-On device, it will be a hassle to relock and reunlock and you will lose data doing that process; also many have connection problem PC/USB.

Anyway .. since you asked for 3.28.401.9 .. my TWRP 3.28.401.9 backup added to post #3.

Thanks a ton, that's great.

So it's a EU version then? Weird, as I do live here in the UK but bought it internationally on eBay. When I called HTC support they told me it was a US-registered with AT&T phone, and then they told me it was a demo version which shouldn't have been for sale!

Although I've gotten back to the seller and they claim that no demo version phones would have an IMEI....... so I'm a bit lost! :S

version-misc: PVT SHIP S-ON

partition-layout: Generic
security: on
build-mode: SHIP
boot-mode: FASTBOOT
commitno-bootloader: df77f8b7

Above is my getvar.

So it's OK to download and use that 3.28.401.9 that you uploaded, even though my CID is a bunch of 1s?

Also, on that point is it unsafe to provide IMEI and s/n? I wanted to use the website: imei.info to double check my warranty and status of phone, but was wary as you have to provide both those things

Thanks so much for your help, I'll definitely donate for your trouble

Device product: m8_ul_ca confirms it's an AT&T device.

Your device was S-Off before and the previous owner changed the CID to superCID and MID to EU version and install EU ROM.

Yes.. you can do use the backup, should not be a problem.

IMEI & Serial are sensitive data when some naughty people can do nasty thing when they have them. If the website is a well known website, should be ok.

I always use this : http://imeidata.net/warranty/htc

Perfect - that's just what I needed.
I actually bought it as "New" on eBay, and when I contacted the seller they are refusing a refund. Do you think I have a case then, given that it has been changed shows that it is not new? I just need to send proof, obviously without them knowing I have installed custom stuff myself, as then I'm sure they will refuse a replacement!!

You can prove that is not new because that "ca" in product ID means a US product and the ROM is EU.

But I don't know how they handle that because they will know that you install custom ROM when your bootloader show unlocked or relocked. You can't change bootloader to locked without S-Off

Since you can't boot your device, no need to follow step 6 (I'll try to remember to update the steps for unbootable device)

So in step 6, instead of booting, stay in recovery and go to mount, make sure MTP is enabled. Then you can open both internal storage & sdcard on PC

On another note, make a backup of your current setup later after the update, you can restore your data to get back your current settings.

This without restoring data ? What do you mean it doesn't turn on ? Blank screen instead of bootlooping HTC logo ?
I just added 4.19.111.3 on post #4 .. you can try restore that and see whether it boots for you.

How can you already tried my 4.19.111.3 backup ? I just updated it about 10 mins ago

I remember some previous cases .. the restore was not correctly done. When they boot the device, they boot the same ROM that they had problem with. Can you check that ?

oh i didnt know you updated it, lemme try it again, and btw i waited for more than 20min, still on the htc one logo
20 mins is too long ...

Just make sure the backup is properly restored. When you select to restore, you should see the selected backup is 4.19.111.2 or 4.19.111.3 folder not 4.19.111.2_ckpv5 or 4.19.111.3_ckpv5 or any folder with date on it.

Good luck .. will check your progress tomorrow ... it's almost 3.30 am here .. time to have some sweet dreams ;)

Hi @ckpv5. With the stagefright update, my android version is now 4.20.206.2 . I was wondering, if I wanted to keep a clean backup of my Rom (like your backups), should I backup right after the first boot of the device or should I just wipe data and backup right afterwards?
