Ok, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I tried the next steps, i.e. installing superuser program: Phone off, boot into HBOOT>Fastboot, tried "fastboot flash recovery" and got "error: neither -p product specified nor ANDROID_PRODUCT_OUT set". And when I tried "fastboot flash recovery recovery", got "Error: : Cannot load 'recovery'". Hmm, I seem to be in over my head. I'm going to go do some searching and see if I can figure it out. But any pointers will be appreciated.

Edit: nvm. I did a search and found slightly different worded instructions, as in for retards like me, and found my way back. I booted into TWRP and should be able to install SU me thinks. Thanks.

Edit: Rooted!

You haven't unlocked yet? If so, and you possibly confirm if there are any files in /data/preload? We think the Calculator app might be in there. I'm also hoping there's a Mail widget hiding somewhere too.
I have a Calculator app and Mail app in my app drawer before unlocking.
Is this what you wanted to know?

Forgot to post that this method worked for me this past weekend - now running an unlocked and rooted M8. Haven't tried any ROMs yet - I always like to go stock Sense for a little bit to get a feel for it. Will mention that the READ ME file (Word file) could be re-written with a little clearer instructions but nonetheless, it did help me work my way through everything. So thanks everyone!

I agree. It doesn't quite have the "for dummies" clarity level, which is why me, a dummy, got temporarily lost :silly: although eventually found my way back. But it nonetheless got me there, eventually.

Suggestions? What needs to be added/removed?

Well I think the best way to answer that is to provide you with the link I used to get back on track when I got lost due to my noobity: http://www.droidviews.com/root-install-twrp-htc-one-m8/

Although very similar to yours, it seems to be laid out in a way that even a retard like me can follow. Ironically, the stated source for that article is XDA...

Edit: Here's another one, HTH: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/root-new-htc-one-2014-m8/

Those are great guides and kudos to the author/authors. The only problem is, folks start following those guides and end up with a soft brick because they use the files from said guide, which are not Sprint specific. I can't even tell you how many OG Ones I had to help save because of this lol.
I'll post links in post 2 with a caveat.:)

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough I guess. The idea with providing those links was for writing style and clarity of 1-2-3 type steps and clear instructions that leave no room for mistake. Your guide is probably the best for Sprint, if you were to make some minor changes to be as clear as those guides. That's what I meant to convey.

I have done this same guide for 4 different devices and try to be as "noob" friendly as possible lol.
Never had any issues that a message here could not fix.
I'll take a look and see if I can tweak it some.

Ok I'll read it newly and see if I can remember where I got lost, and PM you feedback, HTH. I'm the perfect guinea pig to make this noob-proof :D

So I'm trying to unlock my M8 via htcdev.com. It's in fastboot and after I type in "fastboot oem get_identifier_token" it just sits at 'waiting for device'. I don't think my computer is recognizing my phone correctly. I'm running Win 8.1. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Does fastboot devices give you your serial# followed by fastboot?
Did you press power to select fastboot? Does it say fastbootusb in red?
