Anyone got the stock rom for the Android XT1710-09 RETEU NPS26.74-38 (M8953P_15.22.07.27R_ALBUS_EMEADSDS_CUST)?
I just got the rom update notification but apparently, I can't flash my recovery since the 'system image' would be broken.

Damn!

@Santhosh M are you planning on releasing any ROM for this device? Community lack off is what is stopping me from making the jump to Moto Z2 Play. Thanks in advance.

Guys... I've used this TWRP to flash magisk and root my z2 play... but now TWRP won't boot again with "fastboot boot [img-name]"... Stuck in TWRP logo... What to do now?

Sorry to ask this in the TWRP thread.

Is there a method of getting root on the Unlocked Moto Z2 Play? I can't seem to tell what tools are merely advertisements and whether one has honestly had success.

Boot into TWRP.

Install Magisk ZIP.

Sideload Magisk Manager apk.

Done.

Oh very cool. I'd heard of Magisk, but I just read about it for the first time, and that's great to hear that could be a solution for this phone.

How did you all unlock your bootloader to install TWRP? Did you go through the Motorola Unlock process?

Judging by the flags on a lot of your accounts in this thread, you're all in different countries around the world. I am in the US, so I will have to wait until the Unlocked version goes on sale here. Would this version of TWRP that has worked for you all be compatible with the XT1710-02 Unlocked that we have here?

I don't think this will work with the TWRP posted in this topic ...

Is the TWRP in this thread different in some regard?

He asked how to root, not how to get around the issue of TWRP not fully booting. ;)

I got my Z2 Play today which I ordered from Motorola. Can confirm that the currently available build of TWRP is ***NOT*** working with a retus based albus that is fully patched up/updated.

Are you saying TWRP doesn't work with the device at all, or just after flashing the Magisk zip? Your posts seem to contradict themselves a bit...

No. You're confusing multiple posts.

One asked how to root. I gave directions. They apply to all devices.

However, in THIS SPECIFIC CASE, the build of TWRP for the Z2 Play is not working on my device. Period. It doesn't go beyond the logo screen.

I never said anything along the lines of TWRP not working after flashing Magisk. That was likely leojr.

Hey guys, so I think I messed up somewhere...

I initially tried to fastboot boot TWRP, but since that didn't work (just hung at the TWRP loading screen and never went further) I tried the fastboot flash instead; that got TWRP working.

So I made a backup and all that fun jazz, and then mounted the /system partition as RW, flashed Magisk and SuperSU 2.79

System booted up OK the first time...

However, the problems began when I tried to modify the build.prop file to include the "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" line in it, so I can use the default Android tethering without the carrier check (I have a grandfathered unlimited plan, so this is necessary).

After editing the build.prop, the phone fails to boot; it just hangs at the bootloader. ("Your device has been unlocked etc... blah blah blah ID: bad key")

I have tried performing a restore from the backup I created, but doesn't seem to fix anything, and since that backup apparently includes the recovery image (TWRP), I can't use the stock moto recovery to perform a hard reset.

I still have limited access to the device via ADB when booted up into TWRP, and I can still get to the bootloader just fine via pwr+vol-dwn, but I'm not really sure where to go from at this point.

I called Moto support to see if they could point me towards a factory image that I could use, but since the phone is so new, that hasn't been officially published yet...

I'm wondering if it's possible to reflash the stock motorola recovery image via ADB and go from there, but I don't have that...

Any suggestions?

TWRP 3.1.1-0 Moto Z2 play (albus)

    Latest TWRP changelog :

    3.1.1-0 full changelog

    Working/Bugs :

I have just basically tested and all seems to be working (including decryption of /data). If something is broken lemme know.

Please do read the installation guide note !

    IMPORTANT NOTE :
    • At first boot twrp will ask for "Swipe to allow modifications for /system" and if you choose to allow it system partition will get modified. So if you choose to reboot back to OS without performing anything in twrp, the OS won't boot (as verity check is enabled in stock OS/kernel) . To avoid this you have to flash either SuperSU or flash any of the verity disabler zips there in xda

    • Force encryption is enabled by default in stock OS and twrp will successfully decrypt /data at first boot if all goes well

If in case decryption doesn't go fine, twrp will popup a dialog box asking for password and that means decryption went wrong and you would need to wipe data once via twrp wipe options and reboot back to twrp for functioning of /data

    Installation Guide :

    • Make sure you have unlocked bootloader
    • Reboot to bootloader
    • fastboot flash recovery twrp-****.img (if you want permanent flash) or fastboot boot twrp-****.img (if you want temporary
      boot)

[...] Does this work then? [..]

It works, but there are a couple of bugs.

I can confirm that the version of Magisk mentioned in this post works, as yunzo mentioned here.

After flashing recovery, the phone does not boot any more when you select write access to the system partition. You have to either flash dm-verity disabler or the Magisk Version mentioned above. Another thing you can do to get the latest Magisk version is use the updater-binary from the version that works and put in in the zip file of the current version. If you use another version then you'll get mount error on install. I've attached a zip file with the changed updater-binary.

I can also confirm the bug mentioned in this post. I could only flash files from internal storage, sd card access does not work. I had to restart recovery a couple of times for decryption to work though. Don't ask me why.

The bug where the recovery does not register any inputs unless you turn off the screen and turn it on again also occurs on my device.

If you don't want to have the "bootloader is unlocked and can't be trusted" message on power up, the logo.bin from this post works on the Z2 play.

Make sure to backup everything before messing with your phone.

@Santosh M could you repack your twrp with the kernel of the one linked by @romhippo.com ?

Added systemless support and external sd is fixed.

The TWRP in this thread appears to be incompatible with retus based Z2 Plays. I was able to build a TWRP that works for our devices and to get the device rooted with Magisk.

I have a thread up for this now.
