Hey guys, so I think I messed up somewhere...

Keep in mind this version of TWRP is not very robust. The developer Santosh does not even have a z2 play anymore ... There is a better version (TWRP v2) but the developer does not allow the distribution of that unfortunately.

Please read the following topic

https://forum.xda-developers.com/z2-play/how-to/guide-resource-help-thread-t3627615

If you have any other question after that, please create a new topic in the "MOTO Z2 PLAY QUESTIONS & ANSWERS" forum.

> I have tried performing a restore from the backup I created,

Correct this TWRP does not backup correctly :( But if you backed up "system" (and not just "system image") you might be able to restore your system. But you will have to flash the "verity" fix mentioned in the other topic. After that your system will probably boot. However you will not be able to apply an OTA image. You will have to wait for the stock image - which hasn't been released yet (but the boot-locked VZW has two stock image releases already, I have no idea why they need that since the device is boot-locked ...) And do not flash superSU, it does not work on this device ...

I called Moto support to see if they could point me towards a factory image that I could use, but since the phone is so new, that hasn't been officially published yet...

A new stock image has been released. You can find it at

If you want something done, do it yourself...

Since the TWRP build here by Santhosh M seems to be incompatible with the newer Moto Z2s that some of us have, I took the liberty of repacking TWRP with the boot image files in the stock image linked by romhippo.com above.

As you can see now, I've successfully booted TWRP and did a full backup of /system, System Image, /boot and /recovery.

I need to do some further testing to ensure nothing else breaks. So I'm doing what I can to bring a working build of TWRP for those of us who have had no luck with the one posted in this thread.

Is there a method of getting root on the Unlocked Moto Z2 Play? I can't seem to tell what tools are merely advertisements and whether one has honestly had success.

Are you saying TWRP doesn't work with the device at all, or just after flashing the Magisk zip?

The TWRP in this thread appears to be incompatible with retus based Z2 Plays. I was able to build a TWRP that works for our devices and to get the device rooted with Magisk.

I have a thread up for this now.

The hero we've been waiting for! Thank you sir! Subscribing now and if all looks good, I'm definitely getting this phone!

It's been a good phone. Despite being effectively the same as the Z Play but with a smaller battery, the version of Nougat on the Z2 seems a little quicker to boot. Fingerprint Gestures are awesome, too. No need to worry about onscreen button burn in anymore.

That's great to hear. I initially picked up a Moto Z Play Droid, but when I found out you couldn't root, I sold it in hopes of picking this model up with the possibility of the unlocked model finding the interest of developers like you, Santhosh, and others. There's something about the principle of fully controlling the device that I own...

As a physical keyboard die-hard, I backed this keyboard Moto Mod campaign on IndieGoGo and I look forward to getting to use it on this phone. It looks like it will also come with a built in 1400mAh battery, so that should help make up for the smaller battery. But coming from a Droid 4 with a 1735mAh battery, anything will feel like an improvement.

"No Command"

I followed the instructions word for word, I was able to boot into TWRP once and flash SuperSU, after that I booted into the OS(Stock) with no issues, I didn't have SuperSU. I did rootchecker and didn't have root, so I tried to boot into TWRP again using power + volume up, it booted to the OS. I rebooted to the bootloader and selected recovery then I get the dead Android and "No Command" What did I do wrong and how do I fix it permanantly?
I found a temporary fix but every time I have to re-flash TWRP with ADB and FastBoot.
I am very familiar with Android and had a Moto X Pure with full root, custom OS, root, Xposed and so on.

I can't install TWRP. I followed this guide: https://gist.github.com/eexit/e6d5fc0984e1c7f25376d3dafa819792
but after the command ''fastboot boot twrp_3.1.1-0_albus.img'' my phone get stuck on the TWRP initial logo (and I have to reboot with hardware keys).
Any fix for this?
----edit----
I tried also the command ''fastboot flash recovery twrp_3.1.1-0_albus.img'' but it fails with the error: ''(bootloader) Image not signed or corrupt''

just to chime in with my experiences with my XT1710-01 -- this version of TWRP did indeed work for me -- had to turn off the screen and turn it back on to get the device to register touch input when i booted into TWRP the first time.

i attempted to flash magisk 13 as some had suggested here, but the installation failed.

i then flashed magisk14 from the official repo and it also worked without issue... confirmed working root by using solid explorer to move files to and from root directory and used titanium backup to restore data from my old device.

i haven't yet, but will soon attempt to install magisk systemless xposed for adaway, yt adaway and yt swipe to seek modules... we'll see how it goes!

TWRP 3.1.1-0 Moto Z2 play (albus)

    Latest TWRP changelog :

    3.1.1-0 full changelog

    Working/Bugs :

I have just basically tested and all seems to be working (including decryption of /data). If something is broken lemme know.

Please do read the installation guide note !

    IMPORTANT NOTE :
    • At first boot twrp will ask for "Swipe to allow modifications for /system" and if you choose to allow it system partition will get modified. So if you choose to reboot back to OS without performing anything in twrp, the OS won't boot (as verity check is enabled in stock OS/kernel) . To avoid this you have to flash either SuperSU or flash any of the verity disabler zips there in xda

    • Force encryption is enabled by default in stock OS and twrp will successfully decrypt /data at first boot if all goes well

If in case decryption doesn't go fine, twrp will popup a dialog box asking for password and that means decryption went wrong and you would need to wipe data once via twrp wipe options and reboot back to twrp for functioning of /data

    Installation Guide :

    • Make sure you have unlocked bootloader
    • Reboot to bootloader
    • fastboot flash recovery twrp-****.img (if you want permanent flash) or fastboot boot twrp-****.img (if you want temporary
      boot)

    Download Link :

    twrp_3.1.1-0_albus

    Credits :

@Junior Passos - for providing with the stock images and testing the recovery

Have used stock prebuilt kernel and hence there is no kernel source to provide

[...] Does this work then? [..]

It works, but there are a couple of bugs.

I can confirm that the version of Magisk mentioned in this post works, as yunzo mentioned here.

After flashing recovery, the phone does not boot any more when you select write access to the system partition. You have to either flash dm-verity disabler or the Magisk Version mentioned above. Another thing you can do to get the latest Magisk version is use the updater-binary from the version that works and put in in the zip file of the current version. If you use another version then you'll get mount error on install. I've attached a zip file with the changed updater-binary.

I can also confirm the bug mentioned in this post. I could only flash files from internal storage, sd card access does not work. I had to restart recovery a couple of times for decryption to work though. Don't ask me why.

The bug where the recovery does not register any inputs unless you turn off the screen and turn it on again also occurs on my device.

If you don't want to have the "bootloader is unlocked and can't be trusted" message on power up, the logo.bin from this post works on the Z2 play.

Make sure to backup everything before messing with your phone.

@Santosh M could you repack your twrp with the kernel of the one linked by @romhippo.com ?

Added systemless support and external sd is fixed.
