I find it necessary to install Magisk, to get TWRP to stick. Try it.

Please share with us: You did so using @Junior Passos method (backup boot and system then restore them)? format data only? Any other wiping? No verity, f2fs fix flashing, no echo script required? Which Magisk version did you flashed? Under which OS version/security patch? Which device version you have? Is actually as simple as @Junior Passos states? Sorry too many questions, but It's just that I've encountered so many contradictions, different kinds of steps, unsuccessful and successful installs and stuff, that I'm suffering from information overload right now...

If the Magisk version is newer than these ones, can I install them?
Does the boot recovery work with twrp on moto z2 play? Because it didn't on moto z play with twrp, so i flashed it all the time

The latest versions are the ones I mentioned.
I can't guarantee that the process will be the same in a version that don't even exist yet, but it always works without problems here.
When there is Magisk update, I simply install it directly on TWRP. You don't need to backup and restore every time if you update Magisk version.
And boot recovery is work with TWRP.

Up to which OS version will this work? Can we safely use it on the very last Oreo security patch update?

how to handle backup files bigger then 4 GB

Hi Guys,

I created a full backup with TWRP (this version) and saved it on my PC. Now I wanted to restore the backup, but I do not get the System Image copied to the z2play. The file is larger than 4 GB ... just over 5 GB ...
AD push also fails.

How to proceed with backup files that large?

sorry if I insist, but this passage is not clear to me! after installing the twrp via commands in fastboot the twrp is started with the volume and power buttons from the phone, what operations should I perform from twrp ?? I prefer to go for a beginner but I want to understand the steps I have to do!

ok brother! it worked.
I still inserted the 2 command strings from the terminal in twrp!
then I installed magisk.
I thank you so much for your help

Wait... congrats, indeed; but it clearly worked unlike @Junior Passos claims... Did you have inserted those two commands because method actually didn't work as specified by @Junior Passos (without commands), or just because you became sceptical at some point and simply decided not to go this thread's easier way?...

A bit off topic but closely related, nevertheless: I've found no reference inside this thread about Xposed installation and performance after @Junior Passos rooting procedure. Is there someone interested in sharing such experience, if any?

Does anything special need to be done in order for this to work with nougat roms? Or is it just install via adb and all works? Thanks for the help

Just for the sake of trying and because I felt I was probably overthinking the whole deal, I've tried this way as suggested by OP. No success. Wasn't able to format '/data' in the first place ("device or resource busy" error). Knowing process already failed, tried to backup system image instead of TWRP default backup partitions and it also failed at about 70% completed. Then I've tried TWRP defaults except '/data' and backup was performed. With little hope remaining, I restored system and boot partitions anyways, installed Magisk successfully and tried to install F2fs fix latest version as suggested in that thread (I guess, because I've been nearly everywhere these days) but it also failed. All of this "probably" because '/data' was unable to mount (I've found a discussion suggesting TWRP is probably corrupted) Whatever, being as stuck as I was and unable to find a solution while still on TWRP, I've just rebooted system "to see what happens". Well, bootloop happens, of course; so ended up flashing an available system update (probably from Junior Psssos as well)... And then I'm here again asking what happened or which way someone kindly may suggest to go...

You know, this all seems to be way so relative. Nougat seems to be easier. I guess it depends on which device and OS version update you have. Probably assuming you don't have F2fs bug... and perhaps some other condition that's not clearly stated. I've found myself not obtaining enough information from this whole thread since OP, either by reading it or directly asking. A lot of confusion this time and very few stories of success using this method as is. Personally, I've tried as suggested and failed. I guess the clearest message here is "try and see what happens"; and same goes for every other method around. Just assume you may need to start all over again from a new system image flash...

The people think this is a 7-head creature, but it's not.
Just follow what has already been said here several times.
I hope I have to explain this for the last time...

How to use TWRP for first time:

1- Unlock Bootloader (search in Google how to do);
2- Flash TWRP via CMD and reboot recovery;
3- Boot in TWRP and allow permission to modify system (internal storage don't be accessible);
4- Go to Wipe > Format Data > type YES and swipe (you will see an error formatting data);
5- Back to TWRP Menu, go to Reboot and Recovery;
6- In TWRP, go to Wipe > Format Data > type YES and swipe again (TWRP will decrypt internal storage);
7- Reboot to TWRP one more time and internal storage will be accessible;
8- DONE!!!

How to Root Stock Oreo:

1- Boot in TWRP;
2- Go to Backup > mark Boot and System partition > Swipe to backup (don't needed system_image);
3- After this, go to Restore > select Boot and System > Swipe to restore;
4- After finished, install zip Magisk (17.1 or 17.3);
5- Reboot and DONE!!!

You don't need flash F2FS zip and too don't need any command in the terminal.
You don't need to do anything else!

Alright... Thank you very much for taking the time to insert this (quoted) additional steps. Knowing we would face step 4 was actually needed. However, I've tried... and get caught between step 4 and 6. I mean "error formatting data" remains with every single reboot to TWRP/format data again (is that expected?). Well, decided to just ignore the persistent error, and proceeded with step 7 anyways; went all the way through the rooting method right to the "restore system and boot backup"... and get stuck again with another error, kinda "can't restore backup... device or partition busy" clearly related to the first formatting data error (though, I'm NOT restoring /data partition) It "probably" means decryption was either not finished yet or not performed at all. At this point there's nothing I could do except for keep trying things (reboot TWRP and restore again), reboot system expecting bootloop, or go and flash new OS. I did them all. Any hint or suggestions about what happened here?

So I used what you said here to install TWRP and it was successful, it decrypted my internal storage and everything went well, until i rebooted to system (Android Oreo) and when i rebooted back to recovery, it was stock recovery, TWRP was gone. Why is that?

Edit: Also I installed TWRP again and then i tried installing magisk, and when i tried to reboot it was stuck on the "Your phone has been unlocked" screen forever. Please help me!

Did you flashed Magisk after TWRP the first time?... Anyway:

While on bootlogo screen (yes, the one that reads "your phone has been unlocked") press power button until screen turns black (it means the phone is turned off) it'll take some time, so don't release PWR button until phone is off. Then, enter fastboot mode again and search for recovery mode. Reboot into recovery. While in recovery, wipe caches, then reinstall Magisk, then wipe caches again and reboot system after that. Please, let us know what happened.

Does anyone have issue with TWRP not finding its own made backup? I have first time backup in /data/media/TWRP but it's not visible for TWRP to restore. Probably I could simply copy TWRP folder from /data/media/ to storage/external SD/TWRP... ?

On the other hand, I've also made a second backup which stored in /storage/emulated/0/TWRP with no device serial number folder name; this backup is also not visible for TWRP to restore... Probably, if I Just create folder named with device serial number and put inside the actual backup, perhaps that could be enough... ?

Yeah I know; before you suggest me to just try, I'll tell you that yes, I will try; though I'm particularly interested in knowing how common this issue is...
