Put the rom on your pc, connect your device via USB cord while in twrp and, see if you can copy it to your device
I cant unfortunately. when I do an adb sideload, it gives an error that it cannot read the zip file. I will try with an OTG cable connected to a usb drive with the rom file.
So I flash the stock rom zip file when possible?

Always do this first - it had kept me from screwing up a few times. If it doesn't work, it disappears when you boot again.
kind of a theoretical question here. if I wanted to update to A12, and say A11 is currently on Partition A, could I just install TWRP to Partition A so I can take a backup, then flash Partition B with A12 without TWRP? Or am I misundrstanding how the recovery works?
A/B have separate recoveries. As long as 12 has it's non twrp, the 11 with twrp should still work. But since oreo.... the end of awesome backups and roms that weren't bins, twrp now isn't as useful. Conflicting reports of backup/restore operations successfully conducted when titanium backup pro and my backup pro handle everything BUT camera pics, screenshots, and downloads.
This recovery doesn't work. I was on a working 3.6.0-11, and then I flashed this zip through the recovery. Now I can't decrypt data. It shows no internal storage and I don't get a decrypt prompt upon loading the recovery. If I try to decrypt data in the recovery settings, it fails. I'm on OOS Android 11.
Been working fine for months. You said you flashed the zip? So you flashed it after a ROM then. What ROM did you flash?
Does the current TWRP work on A12 custom ROMs? I know it doesn't work on OOS 12, but does this also include ROMs?

1. The A12 kernel source is incomplete (missing various things like touch panel driver and techpack)@infected_ now that the kernel source of 12.1 is out, will there be A12 support finally

2. It doesn't work like that. The encryption/decryption algorithm in A12 has yet to be implemented correctly into any 3rd party recovery. And this is for all android devices running 12, not just op8 series.
Update: As of last night, enough of the kernel source has now been released to start the oplusification of 8 series. However this still doesn't change anything regarding the encryption algo in A12 from being implemented in twrp. -

Download and install platform tools, unzip and add the folder to Windows path,
"Settings > Advanced System Settings > Environment Variables > New"

open command prompt, or powershell, and:
fastboot flash recovery_a twrpname.img
fastboot flash recovery_b twrpname.img

Download and add to path (.bashrc) platform-tools:
