Having an sdcard in the device means nothing unless your trying to boot from sdcard...

You're stuck at that point because your fastboot drivers aren't installed or incorrectly. There have been many posts throughout the forum on troubleshooting the drivers, Google search.
Makes no sense though seeing as I opened the bootloader about 20 minutes before trying to flash

Yea I've had an iPhone for years so this is all new to me. But confused to why the fastboot driver worked when i unlocked the bootloader but not now. Do I need to reinstall them?
Try rebooting both the computer and device, using a different USB cord, different USB port, Etc. If none of the above works, I don't what to tell you.

I have 7.1.1 and rooted my phone using this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/razer-phone/how-to/twrp-magisk-fullproof-guide-razers-wifi-t3756137
I should mention that I have the same problem that others had where slot A flashed fine but slot B wouldn't flash, phone still works great.

Anyway, I want to update to 8.1, preferably without wiping my data. Can anyone point me to a guide? I am weary that no one explicitly says how to update with out losing root/TWRP or at least updating then reestablishing root/TWRP. Do I just OTA update then follow the OP of this thread?

Thanks!

The correct command would be fastboot flash boot twrp-3.2.1-0-cheryl.img

If the OTA update is successful then you will need to flash TWRP and root again with Magisk.
If the OTA update fails (Due to root / modified system. Not sure if Razer checks this) then you can flash the updated factory image via download mode. I deleted the "Erase" lines from the "flash_all.bat" just to be on the safe side. As before you'll need to re install TWRP and re-root AFTER booting to system (To complete the upgrade process).
Just in case make a Nandroid backup before you try either option! Include everything in the backup (images, modems, etc.)

Hi guys,

Kind of new to this scene but have rooted a couple of old galaxies and do follow instructions well (not totally clueless!) but I'm stuck at the start as the SD card refuses to show itself on my pc when the phone is connected.

It's in 'file transfer mode', I've tried a couple of different cables, I believe the card is formatted properly as internal storage as I have plenty of apps on it and the card is not fake etc as I've used it on multiple devices with no issue.

Any help greatly appreciated. Eager to get my razer rooted but stuck at the first hurdle!

This threw me off too as I've never had a phone with this feature before.
You need to format your SD card for removable storage (The other option) so it is read by android and your PC as an SD card. Formatting for internal storage uses the SD card to expand the devices internal memory enabling you to install apps / games / etc on the card. (Think of it like expanding your phones internal memory as opposed to adding another storage device)

Ahh, that makes sense to me now. Thanks for the reply! Much appreciated!

Hopefully I can crack on and get rooted now

Based on this thread, we don't need to follow the old guide if we are stock on the latest ota right? Just unlock bootloader, then follow OP instructions?
Indeed, but if for some reason your wifi stops working after rooting the previous guide worked for me. It's also useful if you mess up and need to start over. :)

Awesome. I haven't had this phone long and just updated it as soon as I got it to the latest Oreo ota. I'm so used to just rooting and modding right away, but for some reason I want to hold off on this. Probably because the last one caused me so many issues later in it's life. Does this method have a problem with the wifi?

From everything I have read by getting on Oreo it seems to have fixed all the hard issues with the stock nougat rom. Correct me if I'm wrong, but now you can just unlock bootloader like normal in developer options( I've already done this on mine, but we don't need to do more right? Like this is null and void? Guide to unlocking the Bootloader) And so long as the drivers for ADB are on the latest versions, and using a usb-c to usb-a chord, the phone is now super easy to root and install TWRP?(I hope it's all true cause then it's like back in the good ol' days)

Edit: Also random question as I have never encrypted my phones before. I installed the Oreo update before ever setting up the device and it was encrypted automatically. Does any one know if this affects twrp or root? I know on my last device the rom didn't support encryption yet ( pretty experimental rom) and the Oreo version of TWRP for that device encrypted the phone but at the time couldn't decrypt. Do I even need to bother about the encryption for this to work?

Here are the official instructions to unlocking the bootloader from Razer, the option in the developer menu is to allow unlocking: https://developer.razer.com/razer-phone-dev-tools/general-instructions/
The guide you linked to looks accurate comparing it to the official instructions. Just be aware that unlocking the bootloader will factory reset your device.

This is both one of the easiest and hardest devices I have rooted. It should have been straightforward but I had an issue where I needed to add the fastboot -i 0x1532 prefix to all fastboot commands but I couldn't find this documented anywhere so I was going in circles for hours. Luckily I stumbled upon it on these forums and if you run into the same issue it won't be a problem for you :highfive:.
FYI my phone is encrypted and TWRP / root is working just fine.

Thanks for that. I have been piecing together what I could for this device and this seems like the most complete. That is annoying for the fastboot thing, but not that big of a deal. Either way I am happy that Razer seems to have at least not made it difficult for us compared to a lot of other devices. I'll probably hold off on rooting for a while and just use adb access for things I need.

The correct command would be fastboot flash boot twrp-3.2.1-0-cheryl.img
If that command is used, it will write TWRP to boot and screw up things. You don't want fastboot to flash it. You only want fastboot to boot it, then let TWRP flash the zip so it properly modifies boot a and b at the same time.

Ahh, that would explain why you need to re-flash the stock boot.img in TWRP before flashing the zip when following the other guide. Gotcha.

Good afternoon everyone,

I am new to the "rooting" scene and am looking for some help. I am trying to follow the tutorial on here to root and install magisk onto my new Razer on Oreo 8.1.

When I run the command "ADB Devices", my phone is displayed and I am able to execute the command "ADB Reboot Bootloader".

But it is at this point I get stuck, If i run the command "fastboot -i 0x1532" to show my device, it does not show up. Furthermore, When i try to proceed with the tutorial, I get stuck on "Waiting for device".

Some help or direction would be appretiated.

Thank you.
