So if I understand this correctly all we need to do is unlock bootloader, flash twrp, then flash magisk and reboot to rooted phone and we are finished?

yep, then install magisk manager if you want after. Also, I always allow TWRP to allow modifications ( not keep /system read only ) as it gave me issues on being able to mount /system afterwards

Use this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e4/how-to/moto-e-guide-to-rooting-t3652982 EXCEPT use the recovery.img you find here instead and then flash magisk 14.3 for root. don't use the no-verify zip mentioned in the thread.

Also.. ignore this part:
"To be able to mount system as RW in TWRP you have to go to wipe and format data, after sliding right type yes and this will restore your system to stock unencrypted, once you're done doing that reboot to recovery (NOT SYSTEM) then flash dmnoverity and then whatever root method you prefer phh su, magisk etc.

SuperSU is currently experiencing issues with our firmware."

and ignore this part:
"
iii. su zip: I used phh's https://superuser.phh.me/superuser-r259.zip you can probably get chainfire's or whatever else working

iv. no-verity-opt-encrypt-5.1 zip: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...2/post74282478

v. Squid2's TWRP for the E4: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...lcomm-t3655160

vi: (optional) stock roms: in case you need to go back https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=195327 applying these with RSD lite (if RSD can *actually* detect your phone) or manually ("

You will need to download magisk 14.3 and put on the zip before attempting to do anything. Also have to use this thread TWRP (recovery.img) instead of the one linked above.

Thanks for the reply but where do I get the Magisk 14.3? Also do I need to get the boot loader unlock code from the moto site? Its been a while and I am trying to put all the pieces together.

I never used moto encription so no idea what that is. I think upgrading magisk shouldn't be an issue tho

When I said Moto encryption I was reffering to the standard Android device encryption located in security settings.

Yes. You have to go through the Moto site and unlock the bootloader in order to flash magisk.

Here is the link for the magisk beta thread:

Where can I find recovery.img? I already have a file named "recovery E4 plus" but it wasn't downloaded through here. Though it may be the same file just renamed, I would like to download it from here.

Just to recap everything and correct me if I am wrong.
Unlock bootloader
Run everything from the ADB file folder with the Recovery.img inside the folder
Then root with magisk 14.3.zip which should be copied to the internal space on the phone.
Am I missing any other files?

Just curious, what is the stock ROM for moto unlocked e4 plus?

Would this method work on Verizon prepaid E4 Plus? I bought one from Target a few weeks ago, bought a code form ebay to unlock it and used it on TMO for a while. I doubt the bootloader can be unlocked on mine,

If your bootloader can't be unlocked then I doubt it. I think I read somewhere that the Verizon varient has it's bootloader permalocked

I went to the moto site to see if the bootloader is eligible for unlocking, unfortunately the model I have cannot be. So does that mean the phone cannot be rooted?

Newbie question, I saw someone mentioned that we should go to Motorola site and get unlock code to unlock the bootloader. Is this needed because the whole purpose of THIS thread is to unlock bootloader, flash TWRP and then root. We do not need to go to Moto site to get unlock code, correct?

Thanks in advance,

No. In order to unlock your bootloader you will need to enter the unlock code that is given to you by Motorola.

But keep in mind that once Motorola gives you the code to unlock your warranty becomes officially void.

Still no way to get Xposed/gravitybox installed?

What's so different between this and the regular E4 that was confirmed to be able to install it?

The regular E4 has lower specs than the E4 Plus.

Hey everyone. I updated Carrier Services in the playstore this week and it broke my magisk saftynet. Fortunately I had a backup before that update and everything is back to working again. Beware of that update.

Which version of Magisk are you on. You may want to try 14.5 as it was just released not long ago and may have fixes for the latest Google services patches. It's worth a try.
I just got mine today in the mail from Motorola and I got it from them so I was sure I would be able to unlock the bootloader since their devices (sold directly from them) are still the international versions and will buy default also work on any carrier.

TWRP for the Moto E4 Plus (Qualcomm)

Based heavily on squid2's TWRP device tree for the Moto E4 (Qualcomm) - See here for more information.

Seems to work fine, but use at your own risk, std_disclaimer.h, etc.

Use fastboot to test or boot this recovery.

    To test:
    Code:
    fastboot boot recovery.img

    To flash:
    Code:
    fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

WARNING: Don't do factory reset or update from system

This version of TWRP is not reading and clearing the bootloader control block (BCB). So, if you do a factory reset via Settings->Backup & Reset->Factory Data Reset, you'll be stuck in a TWRP bootloop.

The quick workaround is to reboot to bootloader, then proceed from there to Start. However, you'll need to do this *every* time until the BCB is cleared.

To clear the BCB manually, issue this command in TWRP terminal:

    Code:
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/misc bs=1M

Or alternatively, just issue the following command from the bootloader:

    Code:
    fastboot erase misc

@ReimuHakurei: I tried to fix a similar problem with a non-standard BCB offset on Rockchip devices. The BOARD_RECOVERY_BLDRMSG_OFFSET makefile variable is used to set BCB offset for command-line arguments in the /misc partition. However, the code to convert it to the precompiler directive was removed. I submitted a change to restore it in an appropriate context, but I don't believe it was ever checked in.

Got Root on Qualcomm E4 plus! ( BOOST MOBILE )

Just tried this on my Boost Mobile E4 plus and it worked. I also used the the no-verify zip and Magisk 14.0 to root.

Can use this guide and just swap out the twrp.img with the recovery.img from this thread:

    https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e4/how-to/moto-e-guide-to-rooting-t3652982

How did you get substratum to run?

With permission I want to post like a compete guide for root, BusyBox etc so it's all in one place. I'm doing a bit of cleaning but I can either pm or make a subject and the compendium! I don't want credit just want it to be easier for us e4+ peeps

Has any one tried this? Does that mean it can be rooted as well? I thought the bootloader had to be unlocked which is not available with qualcomm e4 plus?

I have a model from Sprint, and it's unlockable, just not on the official list -- I successfully unlocked mine.

Rooting is also possible -- use phh's; SuperSU doesn't seem to work: https://superuser.phh.me/superuser-r259.zip
