You do not flash it through twrp. You can use the rashr app by XDA to update your recovery

I'm not sure if this matters or not so I'll ask.

I flashed the unofficial 3.0.2-0 TWRP several weeks ago and it works flawlessly. What's the benefit or the official version and can I flash it over the install I already have? I'd rather let sleeping dogs lie unless there is some risk to not waking them up.

If you're not having any issues with what you're using, then you should be fine. If you want to flash the official, do it using fastboot or by using the flashify app.

You can flash the official using the unofficial recovery. TWRP version 2.8.4 and newer allow you to to flash .img recovery files.

Why so happy?
What are the advantages over the unofficial TWRP recovery?
Er..... It's official? The only one maintained by Deez Troy's team on TWRP website? Better bug tracking, further, improvements? I can't understand your question.
People complained that there was no official TWRP and now others complain that there's no need to have one.

Read other users had issues when doing it this way. Maybe the unofficial version of TWRP they were using wasn't as good.
I flashed the img file from within an unofficial recovery and had no issue. Don't think that 2-3 posts reflect the all truth about what happen in real life.
You can flash with Flashify, with adb, with fastboot, with TWRP and even from Terminal Emulator on the phone using dd commands in root mode. Just try Google you'll find many ways.

There is definitely a need to have an official version. It is a lot better. You can now back up your efs directly through twrp also your system image. That's a pretty big deal. No complaints here

Probably already bugs corrected compared to unofficial ones, and the last ones will no longer be supported. If it's released on TWRP website it's reasonnable to think it has been tested and should work as expected.

That's exactly what I said I was quoting a guy who didn't understand the need of an offical one.

You mean like believing that your anecdotal success represents the entire user base at large? Sure thing.

I had so many anecdotal success since 5 years that it can't be only random. And I tried all the methods in my initial post. People with no problem don't report. You only see the emerged part of the iceberg on forums. Don't try me I don't need that.

Hey...you're the one that started down this path. I was just trying to offer help to someone by giving them a heads up.

Flashed official twrp through the twrp app available on play store. Glad that it's now possible to back up efs
