Hey Guys i have the following problem if i want to flash the twrp_z3_2017-07-23.zip.

I become always the error "twrp error executing updater binary" if i want to flash the zip through my twrp. I use the the twrp 2.8.0 from monxDIFIED and the Carbon Rom 5.1 (Android 7.1.2). I have the D6603 Model.
So have somebody a idea what the error means and how i can solved it?
Provide /tmp/recovery.log.
Use the fastboot method, you wont have problem this way.

Tried to install the 2017-10-02.img to FOTA, but I can't enter it - I keep getting pushed back to the SONY bootscreen.
Here's what I did:
  • downloaded file
  • checked MD5
  • put phone in fastboot mode
  • flashed it with 'fastboot flash FOTAKernel Downloads/twrp_leo_2017-10-02.img'
  • rebooted
  • tried entering recovery by pressing VolUp or VolDown during SONY bootscreen
Tried flashing it with 'fastboot flash recovery Downloads/twrp_leo_2017-10-02.img' as well - to no avail, same result

D6603, CarbonROM (AOSP based) 20170918

Did I do something wrong? Or any hints how to get it working?

EDIT: There's another TWRP for Z3 in this forum (which is 3.0), tried the way of flashing via dd, too, to " of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/FOTAKernel" - no luck :(
Maybe the build is broken?

Process is the right one.
To boot trwrp this way your rom need to support it: push vol rocker while notification light comes on. Color should change when it is ok.
The other way is with the upgraded bootloader (flash >.200 with emma): turn off device without usb cable, keep vol-&power pressed until device vibrate.

I asked CR maintainer if the rom supports FOTAKernel extract. Will edit the post when I have the answer.

Carbon previously did work but I used it yesterday for navigation as my.offline maps were there and the latest build doesn't seem to allow booting to TWRP from ROM.
Had to do it manually with bootloader.

I'm not fmailiar with "do it with the bootloader" - what does that mean? Via fastboot? Or do I need to upgrade the bootloader as nailyk mentioned?
Any hint on how to do that? What is emma???

OK, got it - but I'm a Linux guy. Is there any alternative usable on a Linux system?

Changelog ver 28-09-2017 question

Hi guys,

In previous version 28-09-2017, one point says:

"adb backups are broken for now, don't use them!"

Does it means can't use "adb backup" command from PC?

But, instead can i use "adb pull" command, is it?

Thx

There is a thing not completely clear for me. It's possible to hard brick the device if a do something wrong or there is always the possibility to flash stock ROM and save everything?
Probably the only way you'd hard brick your device with any "user" level software like ROMs and flashtool is if you managed to flash a corrupt or wrong TA partition onto the phone.
So take extra care when you mess around with that.

Otherwise as long as you don't do anything you don't understand you'll be alright. Usually if you can see LEDs on the phone doing stuff or can at least get a boot screen then its likely salvageable.

Yes there is a lot of reason to brick our devices. Into the Sony community hard/soft brick are not used at their right signification. To be clear:
wiping boot will cause a brick, you will still be able to access flashing tools: 'soft'brick
messing up with TA partition: 'hard' brick (thats not true, it is still a 'soft' brick as hardware is not damaged, but as there is no known way to get your device back this had been called 'hard'brick).

Can I install this TWRP on RR 5.8.3 ?
Your rom need to support FOTAKernel partition extract.
Also this recovery is NOT stock (or derived) rom compatible. Check 'old releases' into the OP to find a compatible one.

Exactly, all 'adb backup' file located on your computer will be corrupt. However this mean backup made from recovery:
The TeamWin team is introducing a new way to backup: usually you hit 'backup' button, it store some of the partition in TWRP folder in the selected storage, this new way make the same backup, but on your computer.

This recovery cannot be used with stock ROM as it uses /misc partition.

This is stated in the OP.
You will need to either reflash your ROM with flashtool / Emma or flash a Nougat ROM.

One question:

Is it possible to boot with a app into recovery?

I'm asking because I tried some Apps in the Play store but I can only boot in the recovery through the volume and on/off hardware button.
The smartphone starts always directly my custom Rom if I try it with a App from the Play Store.

I'm using Carbon Rom 5.1.

And yes i searched the thread but I don't find a cleary answer.
Just many post regarding to FOTA support but I don't understand it really.

Or must I ask the developer of my Rom?

If 'adb reboot recovery' do not work, you can't.
This function is handled by rom maker. Recently we had an issue with it and this need to be fixed.
I advice you to warn you rom maintainer about the issue, then wait a bit for a fix.

With 'adb reboot recovery' you mean the way though the PC and with USB debugging enabled right?

Or could I test it with a terminal app through Play store, too?

Ok I tested the command.

Don't come in the recovery. The phone did a reboot after I send the command and trys to come into the recovery. No success.
A few seconds after that it makes a second reboot straight to the system. So I will ask the maintainer.
