Yea mate. Thanks for your input.

The OP asked a question, I asked for more info.

@jason504,

In terms of charging, they are not different. As mentioned, the cable that currently ships with the device wont give you faster throughput than an aftermarket cable.

if you want to take advantage of faster data transfer speeds of the 3.1 spec, you are recommended to look into a 3.1 spec USB cable.

I use choetech but brand Cable Matters is also another good quality brand of cable. There are others as well...
Thanks I don't transfer stuff that much at all. I thought you might get faster charging with a 3.1 gen 2 cable.

Not so much, however with a longer cable (10 feet or so) you begin to increase charging time due to the length of cable and resistance, but for everyday charging, the magic is in the power brick!

Now there are quality built cables (anker poweline series, for example) that will offer a more robust build quality. I usually will get some aftermarket better build quality USB cables and just keep the device USB cable as a backup, or, ill sometimes toss 'em!

Now I'm confused, so correct me if I'm wrong: Cable that comes with N8 is good enough to charge N8 as fast as the phone circuitry allows it. Will having better cable increase speed of downloading/uploading data and if so how much?

It depends on several variables as I understand it.

Snapdragon (Supports QC 3.0) vs. Exynos (Adaptive Fast Charging Only)

Quick Charge 3.0 (QC 3.0) is faster than Adaptive Fast Charging

The Cable that is included with the Note 8 is designed for Adaptive Fast Charging and the Charger is Adaptive Fast
Charging as well. (The factory cable should work just fine with QC 3.0 I haven't confirmed this, but I assume it would)

Aftermarket QC 3.0 charger and USB 3.0 or greater cable will give you a faster charging rate than the Factory Charger/Cable on Snapdragon Chip based hardware only.

Other factors that affect charging rates are cable length and quality as someone else pointed out earlier in this thread.

Don't confuse charging rate with data rate. If all you're concerned about is fast charging rates, don't spend the extra money on the USB 3.1 Gen 2 cables, just get the USB 3.0 (aka USB 3.1 Gen 1). They both have the same max voltage output.

IDK,, How many people have PC's or Mac's with USB 3.1 Gen 2 chipsets on their motherboards to begin with in 2017? I usually try and plan ahead, but I will be building a new PC at that point. The Anker and I Orange USB 3.0 to USB C cables work great. Once I have a PC with USB 3.1 Gen 2, I will let you know.

Ok I was looking at quick chargers on Amazon. They have quick charger 3.0 wall plugs. But some have different watts. Like one has 18w another has 32w. Does it matter which one?

Not really. I'm guessing the different wattage ratings are for multiple ports vs single ports. The more ports, the higher the wattage rating typically. QC 3.0 is a specific standard and any of them certified as QC 3.0 will work the same, it's just if you have multiple devices you want to charge at once, is where you want to pay attention to the wattage rating. Some are only QC 3.0 on one of the ports and the remaining ports are "Smart" ports, Meaning they calculate the max charge rate.

The brands that I have bought in the past are AUKEY, ANKER, and RAVPower.

Note 8 only supports QC 2.0. The SD variant actually support QC 3.0, but for fairness sake, samsung limit it to only QC 2.0 because the exynos variant only support QC 2.0.

Wtf why would they limit it to 2.0? They already get a unlock bootloader. They could at least give us 3.0

I would guess they aren't going to advertise a spec that is faster or more powerful on SD vs Exynos. They would publish the least common denominator of the two platforms. It doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't support a higher spec if they publish a lower one.
They get around it by publishing Adaptive Fast Charging vs. QC x.x.

From what I understand Exynos supports QC 2.0 and SD supports QC 3.0 so they wouldn't advertise that it supports QC 3.0 since the Exynos owners would get upset.

You know what all day I have been doing research on the Note 8 and 3.0 Quick Charge. Samsung told me that the Note8 supports 3.0 QC. But everything else I have read says no it has 2.0. Which sucks because my V20 had 3.0 QC. I am telling you my V20 charged faster way faster than the Note8. But my battery life is way better with the Note8. I usually don't have to charge my Note8 at all throughout the day. So does it really matter? No but it does suck that Samsung has not stepped up their game and put 3.0 QC on this 1,000 dollar phone.

Ok people I got my 3.0 QC wall plug today and the verdict is....... Samsung lied to me or the tech was ill-informed. I used my 3.0 wall plug and a 3.1 gen 2 cable still the same as the plug that came with the phone. So more money wasted ?. But I will have it ready for the Note 9 next year. For sure they will upgrade it for the 9. Hope they go to 4.0 that would be sick.

Did you do a benchmark on the actual charging times between the two?

Does it say on the notifications that it is fast charging?

I'm just wondering if what it reports for charging times may be incorrect when using QC 3.0.

I also noticed this conversation about it as well for the S8 which has the same SD chip: https://forums.androidcentral.com/s...s-use-qualcomms-quick-charge-3-0-4-0-a-6.html
