Just a heads-up for old-timers still on A5Pro - a new OTA update is out (Build number V1.7_20200715) for the global variant. I just did a dirty flash over the earlier version, rebooted just fine and didn't lost any settings, data & it seemed fine.

It's been 10 days since you posted this and there's still no update for the EU version of the phone
Current version is still E_V1.7_20200430

Greetings from NYC and I've been on the latest global firmware and satisfied (more than 13 months later) with how the rom is now "working" - except for battery life/standby time, it appeared to be worst than earlier ... it is what it is, maybe, it will be fixed at the next OTA update, we can hope & wish. The stock camera app now works 95% of the time, which is a significant & positive change for me with one of the earliest production model that shipped directly from their overseas factory (not from mainland China).

If you are looking for an improvement and not happy with the "earlier" EU rom, and you know how to use the tools given to cleanly flash the global rom - I would recommend going that way or route. There is practically no difference in functions or even LTE/radio bands for my needs, purposes & usage - whether on the global or EU rom; and, I have been switching back-and-forth between them ... hoping to find & settle on a stable & usable stock rom. Give it a try and see whether it is helpful to you.

Good luck & as always, best practice, is to backup your settlings & data, photos & documents, on the "SD" folder/partition, before flashing it clean (or, as I've been "lazy" - doing the simple OTA upgrade or dirty flash, without wiping all the partions / SD folder, at my own risks)

BTW, my AccuBattery wear status/health is still around 95% of stock/design capacity, which is pretty good - considering, and it is one of my backup/travel and project smartphone - to serve as a baseline/benchmark against other devices in my collection.

Thank you for taking time to respond. I really appreciate it.
I never really had much issues using this phone, at least not for first couple of months. I was initially very impressed about what I got for the price. Everything worked fine except buggy camera app (pretty much solved by using Open camera) and unresponsive touch if you're not holding a phone in your hand.
However, after a couple of months, phone slowed down a bit too much. It was taking too much time to open any app, and it was frustrating experience to even check emails or messages from viber or fb messenger. Over time and after every update, ear speaker seemed to get quieter. Up to the point I could barely talk to anyone unless I'm in completely quiet environment.
Tweaking the settings with Mtk tools helped a little, but the sound was much more distorted instead of being louder.

Fortunately, earlier this year I got a great deal for a Lenovo Z5s and it arrived just in time where I couldn't bare with Umidigi anymore.
I retired A5 pro, but I'm keeping it for video recording purposes and it's also useful as an alarm clock

What a nice surprise, was NOT expecting much tech support/upgrade after receiving the device (ordered in May 2019) & delayed shipped in last July (over a year ago) with the buggy camera app - which some felt was hardware-related. I can safely conclude that this latest V1.7 patch/bug fixes finally got all the 3 main camera (rear) lens working fine (for mine) - no longer getting a black screen or vertical lines = unable to use the camera when needed.

I also have early production version of this phone that was plagued with camera issues. Updated to the same version. Front camera works, wide angle back camera works, standard angle back camera still displays vertical lines half the time so no such luck for me :(

Hi, I wrote too soon and the main rear camera functions is back to the same old (blank) again, just like you described, since receiving the badly delayed early production shipment in July 2019. Vertical lines are back and I've tried clearing cache & data stored from the Camera App ... "Open Camera" app didn't work either.

If and when I have time, I might reflash the entire rom instead of the dirty upgrade ... and see whether it will help or not. I use this device as a backup and for travel, with its dual sim functions and available 4G LTE bands - one of the last app of choice would be its camera functions. It is okay for Vanced YouTube, media/video player and checking email & news, etc.

This is the first and most definitely the last Umidigi smartphone that I will buy, use and do not recommend, at any price. Period. My fully reconditioned Google Nexus 6P with a freshly installed OEM battery is far better & more reliable ... running Lineage / Android 8.0 rooted.

Why not try Hadenix's Pixel Experience ROM, Android 10? I just installed recently and it seems to be pretty stable.

Could be a placebo effect but it seems the camera app seems to improve the camera.

Maybe my device is a letter production batch.

FOR ANY NEWCOMERS.

DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE.

My phone, even after countless resets with programs listed here, ALWAYS freezes to a black screen with a back button rendering this phone unusable.
I am not the only one with this problem. Users have reported the same thing in Umidigi A5 official forums and they're met with SPAM SPAM SPAM.

I believe it to be tactics to drown out those reporting on such faulty hardware. The reps are nowhere to be seen replying, or flat out ignore people's issues with no avail.

DO NOT PURCHASE UMIDIGI PRODUCTS.

Edit: Tried to reset the phone in every way imaginable. Phone doesn't allow setting of lockscreen. Keeps going black with only a back button present. Cannot sign into PlayStore. DO NOT BUY

Are U :silly: !
If u tested to root your device, u will always have any problems.......thats YOUR problem not from Umidigi!

In deutsch gesagt: " Wer zu blöd ist und sein Handy umbedingt rooten will, der muss mit dem Blackscreen leben."
Doch Umidigi hat dieses Problem schon erwähnt in einem Thread.

Any idea?

I tried with other launchers but nothing at all. I realized that the phone works normally after formatting it WITHOUT connecting to the internet. When I connect it either by Wi-Fi or mobile data, it is when the screen freezes and turns black, even if you restart it many times it stays with that "bug". Then, I format it again, I configure it offline and it works fine until I reconnect it to the internet and again the screen freezes. It seems that the phone works but without having to be connected. Also, when I try to set a pattern or password, it doesn't let me do it. All of the above for many times trying to flash the ROM and / or factory reset. I'm sorry if I look a bit annoying but I got desperate and that's why I'm looking for help

Hi, I have the same problem as you currently, what did you do to solve it? I saw that you posted this more than 1 year ago, I don't even know if you use the forum anymore and if you're going to answer me, but I'm here trying.

This is in fact a real problem in many Umidigi a5 pro devices, I would venture to say that it is irreparable, since it appears to be something of the hardware (physical) and nobody knows what it is or how to fix it.

English - United States: Hi, I have a big problem with my A5 Pro. When I bought my phone it worked perfectly, but after a little use, the screen goes completely black when I try to unlock the phone. I rebooted it from the factory and reinstalled the ROM many times. It has version 1.8, the most recent and despite all that the problem still persists. I would like to please if you could help me with that.

"snipped" - shortened for reply

Greetings from N.Y. for a healthier 2021 around the globe.

I am sorry about reading your issues with this A5 Pro ... mine is one of the earliest production model shipped overseas with the chronic or persistent stock rear/main camera issues; and, there is just no way to fix it, not with newer firmware updates or other apps, etc. It read like yours has a different "bug" or issues, freezing.

Have you tried to change some of the screen "lock" or "timeout" and display settings ? Have you tried Nova Launcher or Lawnchair - I am using NL on this & even my Pixel 3a and Xiaomi devices with excellent results.

You've reflashed the stock rom - and know how to do it safely - did you use the 2nd. option to "update" & wipe clean the SD or data/user partition (NOT the 3rd option to wipe clean EVERYTHING as that will brick it & not recoverable unless it's properly backed up). If not, give it a try - and, if you are on the global rom, tried the latest EU rom (if that worked, you can flash the latest global rom afterward - since the EU one is being discontinued or no longr updated.) For all practical purposes, there are no functional difference between the global & EU variant roms - which I discovered to be true along the way, a while ago.

If not, I don't know what else to suggest or recommend - sadly, consider a complete loss ... I've sworn to NEVER buy another Umidigi device again, period. There is no after sales customer or tech support, nor service and help - emails & messages are ignored, no warranty services whatsoever after the first 30 days or so, unless it was purchased via Amazon (at higher prices).

I read that there is an aftermarket / custom rom that's good & working; and might give it a try to play on mine, when I have time. This is not my daily driver/device and basically one of my bench item to test & compare, to play with. Good luck & please do share your success (hopefully) and outcome. Best regards.

Hello, I have two orders waiting to be shipped from AliExpress. I'm a little worried about the camera reviews. I wanted to know if at least it's decent ...
Enviado desde mi Mi A1 mediante Tapatalk
Hola ?? I just re-checked Umidigi tech support fourm for a newer update/patch/release to fix the camera app - still, nothing ... no can't do.

Based on the specs - it's good hardware so I am thinking, their IT should come up with a better App to fix this for everyone, or else, I think many of us will be filing a dispute & bad press/publicity isn't going to help this small & growing company looking to get ahead against Xiaomi, Huawei & others (and, I still use those devices) The latest OTA dated 07052019 fixed the status-bar, touch-screen issue but not the camera app.

Main problem, it sometimes open & when it does, it's fine for a quick picture or 2 or more, not concerned about super sharp or extra HD images, etc. ... just that it works. Well, most of them, it just freeze up, not FC'd but totally unresponsive, period and that is annoying & unacceptable. It is running pure Android One 9.0 software/OS - everything else is fine, thus far. We have the Motorola X4 and G6, sold the Nexus 6 and traded the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, and have a pretty good feel on what to look for and expect out of this - not a $500 mid/high-end smartphone & not going to compare it to my backpup iPhone SE (gasp ... )

Umidigi just need to fix it for everyone to get a smooth, working Camera App. Now, I could try to install, sideload or run other Camera App but I won't - it's a brand new device and I want the stock app to work as advertised.

Don't know your ordering date as their shipping is clearly backlogged seriously, mine was paid in full on May 21 and just got it 5 days ago ... fingers crossed, maybe by the time you get it delivered, the problem is fixed & OTA firmware/app are released to address the problem.

Not sure if Umidigi will agree to cancel & refund if you open a dispute unless the deadline has expired without shipping info, and AliExpress cancelled & issued a refund automatically.

I've uploaded the screenshot of the "current" OTA patch that did NOT fix #1, #2 or #3 on mine as claimed.
The 2nd. screenshot show what I saw when I open the Camera App.
    3
First of all thanks for the huge answer!!!
Then, did you installed CameraMX/ OpenCamera or ... to check if ... a hardware problem of the cameras?
Enviado desde mi Mi A1 mediante Tapatalk

Yes, I did - camera hardware looks functional, once it is open from CameraMX or stock App, I can also switch to Front Camera ... it is as if the App needs to be warmed up, open & close a few times and then it will work smoothly (flash, video, HDR & other sub-settings worked), until the next time. Impression, not a hardware issues or problem/failure.) Tried again this morning (7/16) to open & use the Camera App, frozen & stuck, doesn't work - CameraMX opened it, but very slow and after switching to front camera & then back to main, it got blurry !!

Issues has been reported/commented on FB already, when I get time later - will try to email/contact their tech support to see (if they answer/respond ....)

Update #2 - Using AccuBattery, which I charged to 95% - mine shown about 67 hours standby time, 9 h 32 m SOT (screen on time) and standby time of 111 hr ... (as shown on screenshots) - "Data Saver" is ON ... others can compare. A screenshot of the A5 Pro's system/about as well.

Lastly, a side by side view of the A5 Pro (6.3" screen) next to the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite Global (5.8" screen) both running stock 9.0 Android One with Nova Laucher, both in a slim case. Included non-slip free case in black is very slim and fit is fine, probably not a lot of protection if it is dropped - but, it will do for now, few if any aftermarket case designed for this for better/stronger protection.
