After Marshmallow I am unable to restore backuped sms in htc messaging app, does anyone else have this problem?

They are probably gone. You should always back up your text messages in multiple apps(Super Backup/SMS backup/Titanium backup) which transform them into an XML file on your ext SD card. I learned the hard way too so it's no big deal. Just remember to do it for the next time.
