It seems that I can't do anything regarding fastboot, except rebooting it. Nothing else work, tried fastboot --set-active=a, but nothing happens at all. Tried fastboot flash boot twrp.img, same thing. Fastboot executes, but then nothing. Have to pull the cable to abort the program.

Have never in all the years I played with Android phones run into this stuff. Fastboot has always worked.

Code:
*# sudo fastboot reboot bootloader
Rebooting into bootloader OKAY [ 0.001s]
Finished. Total time: 0.051s
*# sudo fastboot --set-active=a
<no output here...>
Are you sure that the phone is unlocked?
I never saw this problem. :(

Never seen this either, it says it's unlocked. This problem also existed prior to unlocking it, but out of the blue it said it was unlocked (phone got erased etc). But I never got an OKAY to confirm that everything worked.

Did you try to boot in once into system? Maybe it does some magic settings. :S

Yep, lots of times. Rebooted into fastboot from adb while inside the system itself. ADB debugging is active to.
I have the exact same problem if the energy source of the usb slot is not perfectly stable.
Then it exit fastboot after every "fastboot flash xxx.img"
Solution was to use a stable slot.
Luckily I have enough.

Ahh, btw, if you have front usb slots, I wouldn't use them.
They aren't directly connected to the motherboard (third party hardware is between).

Hmm, I'm using a laptop for this. The only desktop computer I have is running my NextCloud instance. I could try running it on that one. Getting a bit frustrated now :/

Same here, it is a ThinkPad T460P.
On my Windows machine with a motherboard from 2012 I don't have this issues on the backside usb slots. :)

Just tried it on my server, same thing there. It says Sending 'boot' (30904 KB), then nothing more happens. Starting to think that the problem is the phone itself, somewhere deep inside the bootloader probably...

Maybe the usb-c connector is dirty?
I hope there is no hardware damage.
Don't think so, I flashed the update to 11.2 without issue. The only problem is fastboot mode. Not sure it's the hardware here, feels like a software thing?

I guess there is no prerooted version to flash with newflasher?

Newflasher only flashes stuff into the Download mode (green led).
And this mode only allows stuff signed by sony.

Does your server where you tested it with the same results run arch, too?

As I thought then, no way to gain root for me then ?

Yep, had the same problem on that one to. Running Cantos 7 on it. I'm totally out of ideas how to fix it.
There's no way to install twrp, thus no way to install custom rom or get root access.

Does your CentOS 7 run a 5.3 kernel, too?
No, it runs with a older kernel (v3.10). So I don't think it's a kernel issue either. I just got a new ThinkPad laptop (running Arch to now), but got the same issue anyway. I haven't got access to a Windows computer, but my guess is that I will get the same problem there. The only thing I can think of is problem with the bootloader itself on the phone. This is a issue I never encountered before.
