I tried to use my Xperia Z of 10 months to shoot pictures in a swimming pool for the first time. I've heard lots of complaints about water damage and I'm very much aware of it. I took the plunge as it was my birthday and I want something to remind me of it but I think it was the worst decision ever.
Before plunging it in the pool, I pressed the flaps firmly several times. The phone was submerged not more than 6 inches deep and 10 secs long. I was able to take like 6 photos and then the problem started. The screen went dimmed and got an error that the SD card has been removed. I've tried to reboot my phone but to no success. After a few tries, screen is totally blacked out, tried to do the POWER+VOLUME UP battery reset thing 3 times, got it to vibrate several times on each attempts. Upon inspection, USB plug's white strip ok, headset jack white strip ok, SIM card white strip ok but the SD card strip strip turned pink. I removed my water proof SD card and let the phone dry. A few hours later, I saw my camera lens with water steam thing and when I checked the flaps again, all were now pink except for the headset jack. I believe I don't have the back panel issue and all flaps are tightly closed. I use a charging dock and bluetooth headphones so I really took care of the flaps. It's been 24 hours since it happened and I have not tried to turn it on as I'm afraid of further damage. I went to my phone company and was told that I need to wait for their technician 2 days from now to have it repaired and said that I have a 1 year warranty. I'll be waiting to see if phone can still be repaired. Right now it is sandwiched with 2 moisture absorbing pads that I used for my shoes.
Why am I posting this here? I'm aware that this might happen and it did. Even with the knowledge on how to keep the flaps in good condition, It still happened to me. I think the water resistant technology of the companies today are still not good. I think they are going there with the waterproof headphones but for other things like USB ports and SD/SIM card ports are still a long way to go. I still like the Xperia designs but after this incident, I will never ever attempt to test the water resistant capability of my future phones even it says that it can.
