I made tests and washed it. But last time, when I wanted to record videos of my daughter swimming, it sunk (((
I don't understand how the closed flap can open in water?!

Be careful with flaps.

Sorry for my bad english.

My xz died after being cleaned off under running cold tap. Was switched on at time of doing this, but shut down by itself. Since then, dampness indicator at headphone socket, and above power button (sim tray) are now pink. I would assume contacting Sony pointless now, even though handset had been cleaned this way many times previously, and did not get "water damaged"

The device will stay working only for a short time, but soon after screen dims, it powers down again. Sometimes it switches back on, other times it takes much longer to power back on again

If u have warranty, they will give u another phone.. A new one(refurbished although it comes in a sealed box).. Go take it.. Tell them flaps were closed and it still happened.. They will give.. U gotta be demanding instead of requesting.. ;)

I tried to use my Xperia Z of 10 months to shoot pictures in a swimming pool for the first time. I've heard lots of complaints about water damage and I'm very much aware of it. I took the plunge as it was my birthday and I want something to remind me of it but I think it was the worst decision ever.

Before plunging it in the pool, I pressed the flaps firmly several times. The phone was submerged not more than 6 inches deep and 10 secs long. I was able to take like 6 photos and then the problem started. The screen went dimmed and got an error that the SD card has been removed. I've tried to reboot my phone but to no success. After a few tries, screen is totally blacked out, tried to do the POWER+VOLUME UP battery reset thing 3 times, got it to vibrate several times on each attempts. Upon inspection, USB plug's white strip ok, headset jack white strip ok, SIM card white strip ok but the SD card strip strip turned pink. I removed my water proof SD card and let the phone dry. A few hours later, I saw my camera lens with water steam thing and when I checked the flaps again, all were now pink except for the headset jack. I believe I don't have the back panel issue and all flaps are tightly closed. I use a charging dock and bluetooth headphones so I really took care of the flaps. It's been 24 hours since it happened and I have not tried to turn it on as I'm afraid of further damage. I went to my phone company and was told that I need to wait for their technician 2 days from now to have it repaired and said that I have a 1 year warranty. I'll be waiting to see if phone can still be repaired. Right now it is sandwiched with 2 moisture absorbing pads that I used for my shoes.

Why am I posting this here? I'm aware that this might happen and it did. Even with the knowledge on how to keep the flaps in good condition, It still happened to me. I think the water resistant technology of the companies today are still not good. I think they are going there with the waterproof headphones but for other things like USB ports and SD/SIM card ports are still a long way to go. I still like the Xperia designs but after this incident, I will never ever attempt to test the water resistant capability of my future phones even it says that it can.

Okay, i've read enough.. I did it, take several pic under water and it goes dim then I took it to the sony service center but they say it would take couple a month to get my phone back. anyone have the solution without service center involve? I mean, can I fix it by myself?

I have one question. I'm not sure about taking the phone under the water, because the cover for the charger is maybe moving a little. I buy this phone before few days (it was used year +). So, can that make me problems if I take it under water?

Thanks.

I wouldn't put it under water. The OP of this thread damaged his own phone from water getting in the USB port. See this thread.
It isn't worth the risk, in my opinion.

Yes,it's not worth risking. But i wanted only to say that this happened after I changed the back glass,so wasn't sure is it from the back glass or power usb flap.
Before changing it,it was water resistant for sure.
Last sentence,if your Z can substant a dip into a glass of water entirely,it can surely make it in the pool too..

XZ is just spill proof.. Its not completely waterproof.. I have tested my XZ in all sorts of ways.. Poured water on it, no problems.. Poured beer on it, still no probs.. But when it went 10cm under water, water got all over on the inside of my phone and its in service center now.. I had triple checked the flaps before doing any of these experiments.. Thank god, they are at least covering it under warranty.. I honestly wanna say Nay to submerging your XZ or XZ1 for that matter.. These phones aren't capable to being completely waterproof.. But Z2 has been waterproof.. I tried these things with Z2, and its fine if u are careful with 1 meter rule.. Although even all these 3 Xperia's fail to respond for touch when there is water on the screen.. But when wiped off or dried off, they work fine..

You can submerge it for showoff in glass of water but don't try to swim with it. Why? Because what is the point of submerging phone and after that spend few hours to dry it... and fear for your phone everytime when it touch the water?

All that IP rating, just like LG said, its weird and illegible. hard to tell what happen when you get your phone from water after this 30min and put it back to it again. and all that test with flowing water... its just illegible.

So, dont worry if your phone touch watter or you gonna split cola on it, and once per month you can put it in glass of water to show your friends but nothing more.

You are right.
I readed it all.It says no swimming pool,no sea water.No submerging,nothing.
I understand what you wanted to say with water resistance.
But I was curious to find out can it go underwater in a swimming pool cause I saw some videos on youtube. ;)

My birthday incident with my XZ was a blessing in disguise. After the horrible incident on that day and 2 months after, they replaced my XZ with the XZ2!

My XZ2 will never touch any body of water that's for sure. The water resistant profile is really a hit or miss thing.

Hey,i'm using the Z2 now too and I've done all with it what I done with the Z.(underwater)
The Z2 is phenomenal, I think for the Z that the latest 4.4 update makes the back glass unglued(overheating) and I'm pretty sure about it because I saw 3 Z's on 4.4 with that problem.

So I recommend to don't put your Z(KitKat) underwater

I got my Xperia z 1 month ago and I didn;t know about the Battery use and after I played with it a couple of H I left it to charge and when I got up ( about 7~8 h later ) the phone was VERY hot almost burned my finger the google play service bug was causing CPU usage and it was still plugged in to charge so it just kept getting water but even after that the back cover was perfectly flat no unglue problem (and the phone shipped to me with 4.4.2)

Now about the watter test i did some underwater test in a sink then i got it in a swimming pool about ~1 meter deep and played with it for about 30 minutes and had no problems with it ( i used the volume keys to take photos ).
Tho the only thing i have to mention is that the loudspeaker volume its relly low after it gets a loot of water in it ( earpice / mics don;t have this problem ) if you wash it a cuple of seconds loudpseker stays the same , if you put it underwater in the sink for about ~ 5 min it might take about 1 h for it to come back to life and after my swimming pool experience it took about 2~3 h to came back to normal volume.

Only things i wud consider after 2+ years of usage i wud notch down the underwater usage cuz afterall its rubber and it wears and tears over time but sony said it will last for 2 years with 5 flaps close/unclose per day.
Condensation might be a problem but as long as you don;t put it in the fridge and then in a hot tube i don;t see that happening and if so not evaporating.
And for the love of god DON'T jump or do rapid montions with the phone under the water it can make presure around the flaps and make them half open or even completly open.

p.s sorry for my butchering of english
