Verizon just reintroduced a new unlimited talk /text /data plan, $65 + $20 for one phone and it includes Canada and Mexico and if you autopay, you get an automatic $5 discount per month.

Free hotspot (10GB at 4gLTE speeds, then 3g speed after that per month)

Data MAY be throttled after 22GB in billing period.

500MB/day at 4gLTE then speed drops to 2g speeds in Canada and Mexico

It's actually saving me about $7/month over my old unlimited data + 450minute phone service.

I have never gone over 18GB in any one month, so.. I was finally convinced to drop my old unlimited data plan because I am getting more for less!

No idea how long this plan will be available.

Just an FYI

And no, I have no connection with verizon other than I am a customer.

I'm still grandfathered in with 2 phones on the old data plan, was wondering about the details of this new plan. Appreciate the details!
I average 20 to 40 gigs per month and pay extra for the Canada/Mexico data talk plan. The idea of being throttled down scares me and especially when most my data usage is through my hotspot. Think it's best to stick it out. It's funny how hard verizon has tried to make me change plans lol

They claim throttling only occurs if you use over 22GB, in the current billing period AND network congestion is occurring. However, they also say throttling will occur while using as a hotspot and you have over 10GB of tethering usage (in the current billing period). Both those throttle you to 3G speeds.

As to Canada, after 500MB in any one day, you will be throttled to 2G speeds for the rest of the day.

I too had a grandfathered unlimited data plan and a limit of 450 "prime time" minutes and 500 text messages. I never went over either limit. I use my RV 3 to 4 months a year, during those months use 12 to 16 GB of data using the hotspot (rooted unmonitored hotspot) other months only 2 or 3GB.

But..I have a son who lives in Canada but could only text from Canada for free, any other use was expensive.

So for ME, it was a no brainer. Lower my bill by about $7 but data, phone and text in Canada. And still get more unthrottled data than I have ever used.

I tried my hotspot a few days ago (same hotspot, not Verizon's standard hotspot app) and then checked by usage the next day. It showed zero tethering.

In your situation.. I'd be concerned about throttling too and wouldn't have switched.

I am still on the grandfathered unlimited plan. I am going back and forth about switching. I have 2 lines, one mine and wife has the other. We are both heavy data users users with each phone probably in the the area of 60gb or more a month. Switching over would save some money but she is concerned about the throttling. For me, most of my data is done at home so it would be be easy for me to use the home wifi which is probably just a bit faster than mobile data but she uses a lot outside the house. Decisions, decisions...

But does anyone know if they will be throttling the grandfathered unlimited plan as well? If so, then it is a no brainer and the switch would be the better option...

They have always said they will throttle the heaviest 5% of users and there have been recent posts on the internet that the heaviest grandfathered unlimited users are being forced off the unlimited plan, as in giving them a date to select another plan or lose all service. The reports I have seen were from users who use over 90GB a month.

I *suspect* they will continue to force grandfathered users to switch and/or raise the fees another $10 or $20 a month like they did 6 or so months ago.

Nothing official.. But I have read that grandfathered plans now are less than 1% of the total number of users.

Bottom line.. You roll the dice and take your chances.
