I can't try the new method because I have the UK model (it's for international M20P) but as of this afternoon I only saw 1 or 2 people confirming that the new method worked for them. There were multiple reports of it not working and 1 person got an error message saying he should bring his phone into a Huawei Service Center.

I would be very cautious about trying the new install method and definitely check Twitter to see if anything has changed or more people have reported their own experiences.

The error about huawei service center isn't a brick -- it's just the subtext shown on an authentication error.
The users who are having problems either didn't fully follow the instructions, or in some cases have a pass for a different phone. It definitely works if the instructions are followed correctly. The issue is that the instructions are complicated at this point. An automated tool will be released soon.

If you have the UK model and it's labelled as C432 it should work on yours.

However note that due to the complicated set-up, we still do consider it a beta install method.

Random armchair comment and just curious: If you already modify the http library used (based on the names only, haven't downloaded any), why's the hosts file required? Can't you hijack the http requests and change the url there?

Great, thanks for the info. Does it matter if it is a carrier branded phone? Would it remove the branding? After updating via FunkyHuawei would I need to get any future updates from FH?
These are new phones, so we don't have enough history of testing to know whether or not updates will come easily. It will depend entirely on Huawei. You might get an update from Huawei, you might not. FH does nothing to prevent it, it's all up to Huawei.

Regarding branding, it will probably quasi-remove it. What I mean is, you will have a software on the phone which isn't your original carrier branded software. However the phone's actual branding does not change.

Just to clarify, if I updated with the global FH rom, would I then be then be able to obtain any future global firmware updates OTA from Huawei? Or will I still be tied to the much slower updates of my carrier?

Apologies if these are noob questions. I really appreciate your help in understanding this.

The way EMUI 9 phones work, the same updates apply to global and branded phones. So it would be the same updates most likely.
But since this is all very new, again, there's no track record of it. So we can't say which updates you'll get, nor if you'll get them, nor when you'll get them. It depends on Huawei's criteria and we have no way of knowing what it is until we wait and see.

After updating my LYA-L09 to the latest firmware last night I went through the settings to see if anything was changed. The Enable OEM Unlock button is no longer greyed out in Developer Options. Is this because 171 is beta software?

I don't have any cards that aren't already registered on Google Pay. I haven't tried to use it for In Store payments since the update but my guess is that it will no longer work. All of my Google Pay payment methods looks the same as before I did the update.

Absolutely fantastic method, but it fails right at the end for me. It might be because my model is LYA-L09 and I'm trying to recover with the new .171 firmware?

Everything works uptown the point of flashing system.

Has anyone with LYA-L09 successfully flashed?

Please try to use Google pay 24 hours after the upgrade. This is when you will confirm whether Google pay works or not.

I upgraded very late yesterday evening. I will try using Google Pay at a register someplace tomorrow afternoon but I would be shocked if it works since this is apparently a beta ROM.

Going into Google Play and Google Play Protect I see no designation in either place that the ROM is either certified or uncertified.

I don't remember that not showing up on any ROM I've used in the past couple years including beta and custom ROMs.

Maybe it will show up after a Google update or phone reboot.

Are people certain this is actually a legitimate Huawei ROM?
