Unlocked phones are becoming more popular. I am looking at getting a new phone/network, as I recently moved and now have very poor service at my house (U.S.).

Currently, I have a Verizon iPhone 5s (A1533) (that I purchased via VZW and used on their network for a couple years). I am now using this phone on T-Mobile. However, my 2G/3G bands seem to be somewhat weaker in some areas and I cannot do wifi calling.

I would like to get an unlocked phone and have full-service on a network.

I would like to switch to Android, specifically a Sony Xperia XZ1/Compact. Therefore, I would like a GSM capable network (AT&T and T-Mobile -- and their affiliates), but otherwise I don't care too much about carrier as long as it works well. I have done quite a bit of research, but am having a hard time finding anything super-informative and definitive. I have come across < spectrumgateway > and < willmyphonework >, which provided some information, but I'm still a little confused on to what extent each phone/network combo will work.

I've noticed FaceTime on my iPhone works (but can only call other FaceTime/apple devices like that). Is there an app or anything for android that always fill in wifi calling? I mean, the wifi calling allowed in service providers' firmware is essentially that, right? So can a third party item allow this or root the phone to allow it or something?

Is there any network I can use an unlocked Sony phone on and get full-service?

I need a good phone connection for work. I am supposedly well within all service providers' networks (per coverage maps), both voice and LTE, but without the carrier firmware that seems to, essentially, be false. I find this very ironic and frustrating, given that many carriers are now advertising "BYOD" plans (T-Mobile's entire U.S. ad campaign is based around this and unlimited services "the Uncarrier").

Thanks in advance!! :)

[I can't post links yet, so the article is called "Sony Xperia XZ1 & XZ1 Compact Support T-Mobile WiFi Calling" by Alexander Maxham from < androidheadlines >]

Okay, so I found this article today. Can anyone vouch for/test this? This is the only source I've seen claiming that Sony certified the Xperia (both, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact) on the T-Mobile-USA network.

Edit 1: T-Mobile News ("tmonews") has an article titled "Sony Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact debut with Android 8.0 Oreo in tow" where they state "Finally, Sony has confirmed to me that the Xperia XZ1 Compact has been certified to work with T-Mobile’s VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling in the U.S.". Is only the Compact certified? Or was that just a typo/confusing bit?
