Just an update but I tried the Canadian one on my device using the home.csc. Notice it does not have a UMS. It worked! The Canadian version is super clean! I am on AT&T, besides for the known things like wifi calling. Are we missing anything by not using the US Cellular version?

Thanks again, it just seems like the US cellular version wouldn't take for me but I am now happy and bloatware free.
If you use the US Cellular version you miss out on the smart call feature

OP, can you put up md5 checksum's on your firmware link just so we can make sure we dont try to install a corrupt file if something happens while downloading

edit: forgot to ask, does the canadian version have the ability to create wifi hotspots?

I'm waiting on my replacement device so I'll be watching to see how it goes for you. Good luck! :)
I should probably post this in the T-Mobile forum.

I used PrinceComsy Odin and flash passed with no problems.
Phone booted up and setup fine. No T-Mobile apps or anything and no T-Mobile splash screen.
Model shows as G955W now.
Inserted and non-T-mobile sim and got a 'SIM not supported pop up'. Not a prompt for unlock code.
Was able to access APN and could add an APN but would not save. Hit Save and just went to previous screen without saving.
No service with non-T-Mobile sim so appears still locked.
Was trying this to see if I would get an unlock code prompt and maybe have a way to unlock T-Mobile models without the unlocking App.

Well, the good thing is we now know the software conversion is working. It's a shame the SIM card unlock isn't. I guess I'll have to figure if I want to unlock before converting it or not. Either way, thanks for getting back.

So just an update on mine but the Canadian version seems so much smoother and faster than the AT&T version. To answer your question and it makes me super happy to say but Mobile Hotspot and Wi tethering now work without issue! Happy times!:D

Now that we know about the unlock status I wonder if I will be able to unlock once I get a code on the firmware or would I have to flash back to AT&T to unlock her?

The trick in the OP is not meant to carrier-unlock the phone, right? It's jus for people that wanna use bloat-free firmware.

Any chance you have the ATT stock firmware file? I want to try and flash my unlocked T-Mobile GS8+ to the ATT model since I want to use wifi calling

I have not been able to get back to full stock firmware with all the normal bloat and carrier splash screen. In reading lots of other posts others have had same problem.

Anybody been able to go completely back to stock?

I have a Frankenphone now that is locked to T-Mobile but has no T-Mobile splash screen or bloatware and this is after flashing the stock T-Mobile firmware with success.

Well, I have the AT&T version and just tried popping in a T-Mobile SIM and get no unlock option just "Invalid SIM" . I haven't tried going back to AT&T but if it doesn't work than I am in the same boat.

Hopefully OP can chime in whenever he sees this.

I have not been able to return to 100% stock. There is another thread in T-Mobile section and nobody has been able to go back.

https://forum.xda-developers.com/tm...o/flash-canadian-firmware-bloat-free-t3602667

I am guessing AT&T would be the same until somebody figures out how to do it.

your phone won't let you use a t-mobile sim because it is locked to at&t's network most likely. Just because you can get another network's phone software on your device doesn't mean it will allow you to use that network's sim without being sim unlocked.

Let us know if you are able to flash back to at&t firmware. I would like to flash canadian firmware on my at&t device but only if I can flash back to at&t if i need to.
