Unlocking

I was told by a "Verizon salesperson" that unlocking a phone doesn't give you the ability to use everyone of the service providers.different providers use different signals (att,T-Mobile can't use sprint,Verizon etc...).is this correct,or was he blowing smoke.
Seems a waste of time to unlock a phone if you can use only a limited number of providers.

If someone can direct me to a thread on this topic or have an answer it is appreciated.thnx

If you google "difference between gsm and cdma" you'll find a number of good explanations. The Gizmodo article would be a good place to start.

It really depends on the phone. Most phones are GSM/CDMA only. There are global phones though that work on GSM/WCDMA and CDMA. Verizon S3 can be used on GSM/CDMA, Sprint's S4 can be as well, etc..
