Hello guys!

I am in a bit of a nasty situation:
My device: D5803 (Z3 Compact)

Back when the rooting method was found, I rooted and then backuped the TA Partition... twice... just to make sure :)
Then I was on Stock ROM for quite a long time. About 3 weeks ago I decided to unlock my bootloaded to try out CM (CM based ROMs). It worked without any problems... until 2 days ago. The phone suddenly restarted all the time... and I tried a lot to get it back to stable operation. It also did not boot anymore all the time... and when it did... the USB Port didn't work anymore... or also only once a while. To check, if it is related to CM, I used Flashtool to get back to the (first and original) .93. That worked... and the system runs... but the USB Port still doesn't work. The device is not recognized anymore by any computer. I tried firmware .105 and using Doomlords Kernel I was able to achieve root.... and it worked. So my next idea was to restore the TA partitiona nd relock the bootloader at the same time.
As the phone is not recognized anymore vie cable, I used adb via wifi... which works well.
Now: when I try to restore the TA backup (dry run), it tells me, that "the backup appears to be from another device"
...and I really don't understand why... as it definitely is exactly the same device (even checked the IMEI number... no... not changed).

So... why? And is there a fix? Or is it (probably... of course without guarantees) safe to do the restore?

In brief:
Device D5803
kernel: Doomlord http://xdaforums.com/z3-compact/orig-development/d58xx-cwm-based-recovery-6-0-4-7-root-t2890231
rooted, SU 2.46
TA Backup tool 9.11

Thanks a lot in advance!

PS: I forgot: any idea, what could have happened to the USB port? It really feels like a hardware issue meanwhile... as even charging sometimes doesn't work... and even the normal firmware has the problems...

It looks like you are trying to restore the keys whilst on a custom kernel.
Please don't do that. Only restore the keys when on official, unmodified stock kernel.
And the USB port, that must be a hardware issue. My sister's S4 had the exact same issue (I know it isn't the same device, but the problems are nigh identical) and having the USB port replaced did the trick.
I recommend that you get the USB port checked out first before you do anything else. You don't want the connection to die whilst flashing, unless you want a new paperweight :D

I searched the thread and found this post from DevShaft that states the TA partition on SE devices is probably in an unreadable protected location.

Apparently setool can do it but I need to actually buy an setool or get someone to do, it for me im trying to unlock the bootloader of a dev xperia play which has a brown bootloader unlike the retail versions which are called red and cannot be unlocked by retail methods( I've tried). So setool or restore someone else's xperia play ta partition that already has unlocked bootloader. Guess I'll have to keep lookin

I'm having xperia Z Ultra(c6802) with android Lollipop(5.0.2) build 14.5.A.0.270. I tried the complete process as mentioned. but my Backup TA v.9.11 is strucked at "WAITING FOR USB DEBUGGING.........." . I've already enabled usb debugging, revoked the usb debug option, but still no luck. prior to using backup TA, i've rooted my device using KINGROOT V4 and status shows device rooted. so what should I do now

For me too.
I'm Windows 10 user.
What I can do?

I have tried this on windows 10 64bit, I am pretty sure it'll work on 32 bit too.
Download the zipped find.exe in the attachment.
Replace it with "find.exe" in the following directory
Code:

Well... didn't believe anymore that someone would answer to it... but coincidently, I really solved it. And it wasn't even difficult... but really strange.
The whole reason was the cable. I found out (only 3 days ago) that when I connect the phone to my cars USB-Port (for charging actually) my phone tells me about an ADB connection. So I though I should try again on my PC... but it didn't work. So I tried it with the semi broken cable from the car (instead of 2 (!!!) different ORIGINAL Sony cables that I tried before)... and it worked. Whyever... no idea. I mean... I tried those Sony cables before... and they always worked... on any USB Port... so no idea why this was the case now.

...sometimes strange things happen.... :silly::silly::silly:

...but thx for your reply! I didn't try restoring before that.

Can anyone help,

I keep getting this error when I try to restore my TA partition. The Rom is the new Sony LP 5.1.1 23.4.A.0.546 FW customized CH rom and I have tried restoring the TA with the bootloader locked and unlocked and still get this same error with Backup TA 9.11. The backup I am trying to restore is from the same phone so not sure what is going on.

Thanks.

THANKS man for this info. I **** my pants because i use Win10 and got this message. I thougt my backup was ****ed but you saved me.. THANKS

In case there are any other Linux or MacOS users waiting for a port of this… you can use FlashTool in the meanwhile. I used FlashTool 0.9.16 to backup my trim area partition (AKA TA partition).

Launch FlashTool, and turn on Pro Mode.

Under the Advanced Menu, pick Trim Area, then Backup (do not use S1 Dump).

The backup will be saved as an FTA file somewhere inside FlashTool's directory, which is actually a ZIP file. Peek into the file and you'll see the 2 MiB partition (ta.dd) backed up.

As Linux user I did the backup of the trim area with flashtool as suggested by tamasrepus.
Can somebody confirm, that's all I need to restore my keys (if I want to lock the bootloader later...)?

    Backup TA for Sony Xperia

Backup TA can backup and restore the TA partition of the device. When you create a backup before unlocking for the first time, then you will be able to restore to full factory state (including a locked bootloader). This means all DRM keys intact, Bravia Engine working in Album and last but not least your warranty when needed :highfive:.

NOTE: When you did create a backup of your device's TA with another tool or Backup TA v4 or earlier, you are able to convert it to a valid Backup TA package by choosing 'Convert TA.img' from the menu. When you've done this you are able to restore it safely.

READ FIRST: At the bottom of this post is the FAQ. Here you will find answers on the most asked questions. Read them before posting any question in this thread. When you want my support, tell me which device and version of Backup TA you're using and attach the complete output. I can not help you without this and besides it's really not so much to ask in return, now is it? No effort without effort.

This tool currently only works under Windows. Mac, Linux, and native Android will be supported in the future. Using this tool is at your own risk.

Backup Video Tutorial. Kindly provided by @shem2409:
    FAQ
    Q: Is my device supported?
A: Look at the supported devices list above this FAQ. When it is not listed, try to make a backup it will tell you if your device is supported.

Q: Do I need root for this?
A: Yes, you do need root for both backup and restore to work. I would advice to use @DooMLoRD's excellent Easy Rooting Toolkit for this, when not already rooted.

    Q: Can I use someone else's backup?
A: No, this will hard-brick your device.

Q: Can I restore my TA.img file from Backup TA v4 and earlier or another tool?
A: Yes, choose "Convert TA.img" in the menu.

Q: Does it bring back my DRM keys when I already unlocked my device before making a backup?
A: Not without a backup of the TA before it was ever unlocked.

Q: Can I restore my TA while running a ROM with a non-stock kernel?
A: Yes, but it will soft-brick your device and you need Sony PC Companion or Flashtool to fix it by flashing stock firmware. Best is to first return to a complete stock ROM or at least flash a stock kernel (do not confuse with stock based kernel!) before restoring the TA, this prevents the soft-brick.

Q: Will a restore relock the bootloader?
A: Yes, it will relock the bootloader like it was never unlocked.

    Q: What is 'restore dry-run'?
A: When you do a dry-run restore it will perform a regular restore with the exception that it will not write anything to your device. This is helpful to test a backup without actually restoring it.

Q: What is the correct file size for a backup?
A: The TA partition size can differ per model, so there is no one answer to this question. You can rest assured that your backup is fine, also in file size, when the tool says the backup was successful.

Q: Why do multiple backups often differ in size?
A: The TA partition also contains a logging area which changes every time the device boots, which then leads to different compression size per backup file. Nothing to worry about.

I write this post to inform you that I will not maintain this tool anymore. There are a couple of reasons for this.

    Nexus owner
Since I bought myself the Nexus 5 I have vowed to never buy a non-nexus device (when Nexus is available that is) anymore. Reason for this is the latest updates of Android, the bootloader which can be unlocked and relocked without having to find locked root first and then make a backup of keys or certificates to still have warranty without questions asked. So another Sony device (or any HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc for that matter) will be highly unlikely for me.

    Window 8+
I got this beautiful Apple Macbook Pro from my work and I almost never touch my Windows machine anymore. On this machine (old one) I can not install Windows 8 or later since it is not compatible. Therefor I am unable to give support to the latest Windows versions.

    No time
I have found some other interesting hobbies I would like to spent my time on. One of them is AI and the other is sports. With that, and my personal life in general, there is no time left to work on projects as these.

Since this project is licensed under MIT, anyone can pick up the maintenance or start their own tool. This thread and their downloads will not be removed, so you can always download the tool for a restore or backup.

    FAQ
Q: Do I need root for this?
A: Yes, you do need root for this to work.

    Q: Does it really work?
    A: Really?

    Q: Can I use someone else's backup?
A: No, this will hard-brick your device.

Q: Does it bring back my DRM keys etc. when I already unlocked my device?
A: Not without a backup of the TA before the initial unlock.

Great that you made a new one, may keep others from uneccesary bricking their devices

A thing for the FAQ would be the softbrick when restoring on other than stock and and that it only works on totally stock, not bringing DRM keys to other ROMs when unlocked.
