That's what bothers me, that I'll have to re-configure the phone. Of course there is the Titanium Backup, but I still wanted to avoid such a problem for the future.

By the way, from the update I took out the latest versions of boot and recovery using decrypt tool
Same here. In fact other than reconfiguring the phone after update, device needs to be rooted again which means the whole process is PC dependent.
Cannot do OTA on the fly.

Do you really need decrypt tool to get boot and recovery from an ota?
I just unzip it and then unzip firmware.zip.
If you can retrieve directly from the zip then the zip may be already decrypt and unsigned. But I highly doubt that stock boot and recovery can be directly extracted from the OTA zip.

That's why decrypt tool is there.

Again my great respect to @nkk71

Hi,

Typically OTA zips are unencrypted. The decrypt tool is for RUUs.

So this is the right thread @SlyUK TWRP has to decrypt the internal storage to read it. That's the reason why Magisk only can be successfully flashed if you format userdata after flashing. For example we can't write the system partition without working decryption, but that's what a custom ROM does. It formats the system partition and writes a new system image. This is also the reason, why we need an external SD card to flash a kernel, it's not encrypted, so TWRP doesn't face the decryption issue. You can try to flash from internal memory, you won't be able to access the internal storage if you are encrypted, so you can't flash. No decryption, no write to system partition.

Are all smartphones encrypted when you first buy them ?

Android enforces encryption since a while. I think since marshmallow. You can disable force encryption in the kernel tho. Otherwise it will encrypt every time you boot after formatting user data.
Ok thanks, I'll try and read up a bit more about it when I have the time and get back to you if need be.

If we had a decrypted kernel, should twrp work then?

It's really sad that development are missing for this device [emoji852]️

Is TWRP for U11+ is not more developed? :(
Well, apart from decryption everything is functional from what I tested. There is no ROM for the U11+ and Cleanslate kernel doesn't require data partition to be decrypted to flash. Don't think anybody has further development of this TWRP build ranked high on his agenda. With nkk71 we missed one of the leading TWRP heads. RIP.

@Cryptycat7 - have you been able to restore a backup made with TWRP?
