CyanogenMod is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. Linked below is a package that has come from another Android project that restore the Google parts. CyanogenMod does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.

All the source code for CyanogenMod is available in the CyanogenMod Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to CyanogenMod, please visit out Gerrit Code Review (sort of changlog). You can also view the Changelod for a full list of changes & features.

I just downloaded and tried installing, and it failed.. Don't ask if I am using the right recovery or did a wipe... I am re-downloading to see if that is the issue..

Okay, re-downloaded it and it is installing... booting... changed animation (I like it).. and we're up.. Everything is working perfectly.. Good job!!

Sadly that doesn't work.

It just occurred to me: If I flash the PA or Banks Gapps over this (or any other CM based ROM) it claims to be replacing the stock launcher with the new KitKat launcher. I guess this means it replaces Trebuchet?

I flashed the euroskank ROM and my launcher was missing. Along with the ROM i flashed the PA GApps. My homescreen was blank but all others working except the launcher. I Installed a Nova launcher and everything was working like jelly bean . The i saw a luncher in my apps but was giving an error that google Search was not installed. I installed google search and restarted the device. then got the stock launcher to work.

Strange that the launcher is linked to Google Search! if you remove the search, then looks like the launcher will not work. thats my guess.
