my shift is rooted but my wife doesn't want to do hers so i thought there might be something that can be done unrooted
The only way for CPU OCing on an Android OS device to work is to root it. A stock kernel's CPU values are static i.e. locked to a min/max frequency. By rooting the device, these values become dynamic which allows you to set them. Just be cautious of the values you set as either too low or too high may cause the device to lock up or reboot.
