I downloaded this mod: androidfilehost .com/?fid=11410932744536996371 and flashed it, works fine, but TWRP (3.2.3-1) doesn't work. unable to mount storage it says, tried changing the file system type to EXT2 and back to EXT4, it didn't work. also, MTP doesn't work, so even when I Format Data completely, I can't put anything to flash it. can't even flash a working TWRP, what do?
1st Make sure you have the no-verity zip in the op on your external drive.
Then if it boots to twrp after installation of firmware, go to wipe and then wipe data. Type yes and press the check mark. Go back to main screen of twrp and to reboot and do this for recovery. Then mount system and all and then go to install and install the no-verity zip. Then reboot system. After setting up you can install magisk if you want root... good luck. :)

Just curious, in the modded ap file, the meta-data folder is missing, isn't that needed?

I have a SM-T580 that either came with 8.1 or immediately updated to 8.1. The latter is more likely as I recall seeing have 7x version of Android installed. I'm using the 8.1 twrp linked by the OP and I did the usual (not my first time with adb, I have an 1+ 6 and an Amazon Fire that I've rooted) but after the files copy over in the download mode (post a factory reset) it boots up into TWRP and I select what I think are the right settings, and boot it up. I immediately update TWRP, but I dont know anything about flashing the twrp image, I havent done that before. And if I install SuperSU it says root is undetected. I'm sure I'm missing a stupid detail but I'd love to figure this out before I brick this damn thing if anyone would be so kind as to point me in the right direction.

I reset to factory defaults and reboot but TWRP still came up. Now just waiting at the logo.

No need to invent anything. Just do what is written in OP.
