My phone was running great. I had my favorite apps that needed root, and I had gotten rid of all those stupid ads placed next to buttons. Then I accepted the update. I didn't know that it was this ugly ad infested monster that would not offer me anything. Just more apps to disable and crap that makes me mad.

Who do I donate to that will help get this thing rooted?

I will gladly be a test subject and try anything that needs to be tested. Let me help in anyway I can.
Sorry but it looks pretty bleak for root on the OTA, the S5 root thread is at $17,112.00 for root. Believe me there are some very talented devs working on this but with that kind of cash and no root it doesn't look good at all. It's for a different phone but it's the same 4.4.2 android os.

I was able to update and keep root.

I did pay for the premium SuperSU, not sure if that makes a difference.

I was also initially failing the OTA update with error 402. To fix this I did the following:

1) Uninstalled Xposed Framework
2) Rebooted
3) Uninstalled multiwindow mod app
3) Replaced system/csc/feature.xml with the feature.xml.backup that was created when I used the multiwindow mod app
4) Rebooted
5) Disabled Superuser
6) Enabled Survival mode
7) Downloaded and installed OTA update
8) After update I enabled Superuser right back

I have the paid SuperSU as well. The only thing I did different was not disabling it before updating. I did turn on survivability mode though. It wasn't obvious to me that I should have disabled SuperSU (since I wanted to keep root).

So anybody attempting it, maybe try that? Or just stick with NC2 and avoid NC4/OTA updates until this is sorted.

Ok. So a number of you are going up from nc2 to nc4. Regardless of whether reasons you had... honestly, what differences between the two are you getting? Has the slight update been worth it?

It isn't worth it. Even if they've rooted NC4 now, they lost all the benefits of the leaked bootloader (e.g., downgradability and "kexec" possibility). Additionally, they'll have no option to reroot or recover when needed––until finding a root method for KK, which could take a long time.

I think maybe you need to speak for yourself and not for everyone that has updated. As I've said before and will say as many times as needed, I don't need to be able to downgrade nor do I care about kexec. They are useless to me.

Sorry, but I didn't mention you in my reply. Anyone on NC4 may lose the root for some reason and then wait for a KK root method. The ability to downgrade gives an option to reroot when needed. However, you can do whatever you want.

That may be true, for you and for others. Reasons don't matter. But what I'm actually asking is (if you were on nc2) was there a quantifiable difference for you between nc2 and nc4?

I keep getting error durring the install. i have removed the xposed framework, wanum exposed, disabled su and entered survival mode, no luck... any thoughts?
Check if system/csc/feature.xml was modified by another app. Often apps that add features such as more apps to multiwindow and the pen window will edit that file. The update will fail if feature.xml fails a crc check. Hopefully there will be a backup if it was edited by an app.

This thread discusses some of the differences.

I wanted the new modem firmware for the best XLTE experience coupled with the best stability for work so updating through the OTA was a no brainer for me.

Let's say you have two files:

system/csc/feature.xml
system/csc/feature.xml.backup

Use a file explorer app that has root access such as ES File Explorer and

rename system/csc/feature.xml to system/csc/feature.xml.something
rename system/csc/feature.xml.backup to system/csc/feature.xml

then reboot.

***This assumes the .bak file you have is of the original system/csc/feature.xml file***
