I hope i am posting this is the right place, i have installed your latest pre-rooted rom (23.4.a.1.232) and all is working brilliantly the problem i have is when i try installing other custom roms, i have the sgp511 (castor_windy) but every time i try installing a new rom apart from this one i get an error saying "this rom is for castor_windy your device is castor" when i know its not. i've tried flash the dual recovery files separately as i read someone else had the same trouble but it didn't make any difference am i missing something completely or just plain stupid ( answers on a postcard please to - 24 mapperley madhouse, looneybin lane, crazyville ;p ).
Well this is Sony stock rom with root and custom recovery. Nothing else is changed. What custom rom you try to install? Maybe editing install media solves your problem? Can you post your build.prop file so I can see if there is something wrong?

You have very similar errors asxx @markusmuster have. You did't mentioned what settings you used?
Yes I have tried the option of a different player but no change couple of vids and the problem creeps back
busybox installed
Adaway and xposed but no mods to YouTube or anything that should interfere with it
MX player and vlc work elsewhere
Also why does it work then fail

The one and only workaround is to boot into recovery, clear cache partition only and reboot into system. That helps for some time. Also always exit YT completely, even in the app-history. This also gives you some extra time...

But in fact this is a really really annoying bug, fortunately not only on the Z2tab, also on some Nexus 7 and 10 devices and some Samsung ones... I wish the bug is gone in 6.x....

Nice nice, thnx kulverti :)
Can you post a screenie from the Stagefright Detector app from Zimperium? By then we can see if Sony (finally) smushed Stagefright completely, or well.. they still try to make us happy with an empty bag where just sits air inside. :)

Thnx in advance Kulverti.

So. I have an M4 Aqua E2303 here that is having the same exact OMX issues as @markusmuster

And the same issue as @yuzhengwen has here, on a Z3:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/development/d6603-23-1-1-28-t3102271/post63126965

NuPlayer vs. AwesomePlayer make no difference, video works after wiping cache & rebooting - for a while. Eventually it stops working again. If you trick the YouTube app long enough with spamming, you can get it to play videos at 144p quality, but that's it.

The Z2 Tablet and the Z3 have nearly the same chip SoC (MSM8974AB and MSM8974AC respectively) and the same GPU (Adreno 330). The M4 Aqua on the other hand has an MSM8939 with an Adreno 405.

I've found various references when googling this indicating that this can be caused by incorrectly starting multiple HW decoding streams at the same time. Just google "Comp Init Returning failure, errno 12" and "FAILED to allocate omx component 'OMX.qcom.video.decoder.avc'" and you can find quite some information on this including quite a few bugs in apps like e.g. Firefox causing this behaviour.

I suspect there's a bug in the Sony ROM here (HW-specific bug is unlikely due to the M4 Aqua having a different SoC & GPU, although also QCom) that is exposed by /some/ apps calling the video decoding incorrectly. This shouldn't break video playback in all apps, though, so this is probably one bug causing another bug. In addition, Sony has some weirdo bug when it comes to updating YouTube that you can't bypass unless you're rooted. I suspect it might be related, see my post here:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/m4-aqua/help/update-youtube-app-m4-aqua-uninstalling-t3257663

Anyone have any idea wth is going on? Maybe we should start a new thread on this in the Sony Xperia cross-device forum...

Indeed its a bug in Sony's Rom that I hope will be fixed in Marshmallow. Meanwhile, OGYouTube is the way to go.

Dear All,

I got a very nice Christmas present: a Sony Z2 tablet sgp511 23.4.A.1.200 5.1.1 :)

Should I have to downgrade to install your zip file?

Thank you
Congratulations. This is indeed nice device. To install this you need root and custom recovery (TWRP recommend). As far as I know you can root 5.0 firmware correctly but not 5.1. So if you already have 5.1.1 firmware without root and custom recovery, you need to downgrade to rootable firmware.

Btw, I wanted to know your opinion : Do you think that stock 23.4.A.1.264 feels a bit slower compared to the latest CM12.1 nightly ? I've noticed that Cyanogenmod feels snappier all around.

I've done a little experiment and here are my results :

-On Antutu scores, stock 23.4.A.1.264 has a score of around 49000 whereas CM12.1 has a score of 54000.
Sony must have CPU optimisation and thermal throttling set in early in their kernel, because under heavy load, stock rom will stay at around 45°C, whereas CM12.1 will go up to 50-60°C.

-I've fully charged my tablet, and it took around 1H20min of screen on time to get to 90% on stock rom, whereas on CM12.1, it takes around 40-50min to get to 90% battery life. This confirms the impact of the CPU management in CM12.1 on the battery.

-I've noticed that Bravia engine actually enhances the screen quality, making images and videos somewhat sharper on stock rom vs CM12.1.

Overall, all of these results made me stay on Stock :D

Thanks @kulvertti for bringing an easy to flash stock rom package for our Tablet Z2 :D Looking forward your Marshmallow package once Sony decides to hurry up a little ^^

Thanks very much again. But I think the link didn't get added properly.

Yes. Need to upload the zip file first. For some reason upload speed was not what I´m expected this time.

but now, OP updated with the first firmware update from Sony to this year with the link. Tough this is still android version 5.1.1.

Works great now thanks. I'm happy with android 5 still! I won't be installing 6 for a while after it comes out as there are bound to be lots of broken bits! ?
Hi

Here are flashable zip file wich installs latest Sony stock 5.1.1 Lollipop ROM 23.4.A.3.6_R7C (VMo JP), latest stable SuperSu v2.46 and latest Dualrecovery 2.8.23 with read and write acces to system. Because device is Wi-Fi only region doesn´t matter. Only difference is bloatware.

Here is the link for new 5.1.1 firmware:

Make nandroid backup before flashing.
Install it by flashing whole zip file via custom recovery. TWRP recommend.
Factory reset is recommend but you can try by dirty flashing but dalvik and cache wipes are recommend.
