First: Thanks to Kulvertti for all his work.

I am still confused. Do I need to root my device on forehand?

What I have understood so far:
You don't have to have root to flash NUT's [TABZ2][TWRP][PhilZ Touch][CWM] XZDualRecovery (It won't bring you root either).
So you can flash this recovery as long as you are on unrooted but rootable stock firmware (e.g. 17.1.2.A.0.314).
Then can flash this pre-rooted stock Lollipop ROM 23.1.A.1.28 and you will have root.

So only 3 steps to go from unrooted stock Lollipop to to this pre-rooted Lollipop?
1) flash rootable firmware (from PC, using flashtool).
2) flash "NUT's" recovery (from PC, using NUT's installer).
3) flash this pre-rooted stock Lollipop ROM (from sdcard1, using TWRP recovery)
Is this correct??

Correct. Choose option for unrooted device from [NUT] installer and it root your device before it install Dualrecovery.

I figured out my issue. when i flashed boot.img, i didnt flash it as boot. I flashed it as the whole rom. now my tablet wont connect to my pc and cannot resotre because everything is gone. I tried to "Wipe data/factory reset", but I think that made it worse. please help, I cant figure out how to let ADB connect to my tablet. I just keep getting an error about device not found.

Sorry to hear. Try to install your firmware (ftf file) again with Flashtool in flashmode.

Ok, I got it fixed (thanks btw). I now cannot figure out how to flash dualrecovery. the internet tells me that either there is an install.bat (there is not) or i can find the img in the tmp folder (also isnt). I went to a thread that had the extracted twrp, and also found that I need to flash recovery not boot. I did this, but no I cant reboot to recovery. mashing the volume up doesnt work, and neither does adp. just to check I used my working CWM img, but i cant reboot into that recovery either.

once I can figure out what this issue is, I should be able to flash your rom without any errors (those ones before were cause by the lack of a kernel which I fixed)

Your are welcome. There are two kinds of files. Flashable via recovery and installable via pc. Choose installer version and you find install.bat in it.

thanks. I had to dust off an ancient laptop 'cause my pc was being stupid and none of my browsers worked

i got the some error when I used easy root tool

all times it went through, but when tested (either by the program or by me) it didnt work

do I need to install something else on my computer? is towelroot something I need to install?

Are you by any chance trying to root Lollipop firmware? Latest rootable firmware for this device is .314 (KitKat 4.4.2) firmare. Download it here: https://mega.co.nz/#!kcxxjaLA!itErjRi2fYPPswal-c7XasF_lAvPKyY4GwEzY3xgHZ0 and flash with flashtool. Then try to root it again.

I just received a second Xperia Z2 tablet SGP512/ 32gb, and it comes already with 23.1.A.28 firmware already installed. I am trying to downgrade in order to install this prerooted zip, but i keep getting this error in the SonyMobile Flasher software:

It is downgradeable. Maybe bad download. Download again and try flash with Flashtool. If no luck send Flashtool log here so we can see what happens.

It's working very well. Battery life is good. All stock features work. Xposed ain't stable yet and some modules don't work with LP but other than that no major problems with apps.

This is interesting. Obviously I can´t test this myself but it should work if you don´t mind mobile data. If you do care mobile data instead of this I would flash my friend @Bird40 prerooted firmware from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2-tablet/general/prerooted-zipcustomized-ncb-t3100783.
And if after that your mobile data don´t work there is this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/cro...ad-progress-please-leave-im-updating-t2871269 which should help you to have working mobile data with verizon also. Please report back how it go. For rooting I still think best way is downgrading to 4.4.2 firmware if you are any higher and using easy root tool, dualrecovery... etc. There is this http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/one-click-root-tool-android-2-x-5-0-t3107461
but it won´t give you proper root and there is some security questions with it. Good luck.
