2.3.6 Rooted, but what ROM?

New to this forum and rooting but I've owned an Atrix for a long time now. Mine has 2.3.6 loaded and unlike most people here I don't need help with rooting; I got that far and verified with an app that I indeed have root access.

My intent is to get the phone unlocked to use on any GSM network it's compatible with, like t-mobile. I don't need anything fancy, just that. What ROMs are recommended for this? What other basic procedures besides loading a ROM will I have to complete? There's a lot of info in this thread about a lot of stuff and I don't want to leave out a crucial step nor waste my time doing something that is irrelevant to what I'm trying to accomplish, either. Thanks in advance! :D

I'm not sure if I understood you right, you want a ROM that will unlock your device to use with different carriers?
Unlocking the bootloader / rooting / changing ROMs won't unlock your phone to be used with another operator, you have to get the unlock code for it. I don't know how it works in your country, see if your carrier supplies the code, or else you can buy the code online (there are a lot of sellers in ebay which sell the unlock code).

Yes, that's exactly what I was looking for. I see what you mean now about the unlock code; if unlocking/installing a custom ROM has nothing to do with this, I'll look into that!

This is great stuff! going into my bookmarks already.
However knowing there is a new version of gingerbread (not sure how new) 2.3.6 some of this stuff doesnt work for it anymore.
For example the rooting procedure for 2.3.4 is not the same as for 2.3.6, I had to do it manually.
The bootloader unlocker is the same though.
2.3.6 is also good because it includes updates for the webtop like firefox 8 and more stability.
So would you mind adding the rooting process for 2.3.6 (not for me but for people), also maybe a link to download this new version, there is also a new version of RDS 5.6, both links are here:
http://www.digitaltweaker.com/andro...led-to-boot-4-after-upgrading-to-4-5-141-ota/

This guide was especially essential for me when I first soft bricked my atrix :D

FInally, you might want to add the link for the UBuntop project, I've tried both webtop+ and ubuntop and I like this second one most because it has the nice task bar and ubuntu like menu, and you don-t have to mount the linux image everytime you try to run a linux app, besides seems like synaptic has more software available and runs smoother.

Other than that, excellent job!

sbf files

I'm having trouble deciding whether to flash a 2.3.6 sbf file or a 2.3.4 sbf file for my dad. He did the factory reset option on the phone and I can't get back into the phone to check the firmware version. RSD lite doesn't have an answer either, doesn't show version number. Phone is stuck on "Starting RSD protocol support" and I'm unsure of what to do. Any suggestions?

Running AT&T's v2.3.6. Are these methods still good?

I just want to say that this thread is still good and up to date! I just got a new never been turned on Atrix this past Tuesday and I'm on a custom ROM!

Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app
Hi !

Recently Motorola has backed out on their promise of providing ICS for the Motorola Atrix 4G on AT&T. So, I am trying to find if there's a way I could load a custom ROM on my Atrix 4G. I have few question, if you or someone else can please answer those:

1. Can I use instructions in this post to unlock bootloader, root and burn custom ROM on my Atrix 4G (from AT&T) running Gingerbread 2.3.6.
2. Are there any known issues with the Cyanogenmod stable build 7.2 for Motorola Atrix ? FYI - I don't have any webtop or car Dock, so don't care if those don't work with this build.

Thanks in advance folks. :)

Be careful and don't make anything rash while reading this. This is the way I did it
Step 1)
This part will help you ROOT your device.
HTML:
http://www.androidauthority.com/atrix-4g-android-2-3-6-firmware-4-5-141-root-63533/
Step 2) This will help you unlock your boot loader
HTML:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
Step 3)Install Clockworkmod or another recovery by searching the forum

Step 4)Choose the rom you want to install and follow it's specific directions

The answers on your questions are
1)I don't know for 2.3.6
2)CM7.2 is very very stable and I haven't experienced any problems with it. Now I'm on MROM and I like it more than any other rom

Boot modes explained

A fellow member contacted me and asked me to explain fastboot for him. Soon enough, my simple and brief explanation turned into a full list of boot modes. I thought that might be generally useful so I'm sharing it here too. I haven't seen such a list before, at least not presented in this way; if there is one I apologize for makin another. Anyway, here goes...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are several boot modes for any Android device, in decreasing level of complexity. You can think of it this way - a more complex system has to come from somewhere, right? That "somewhere" is usually the boot level right below it.
  • Normal boot. This boots your normal OS/ROM. This is what you'll boot into most of the time.
  • Recovery. This is a "mini-OS" with a simple user interface which can be used for maintenance of your normal OS. Here you can make a backup of the OS, restore a previous backup, attempt to repair a broken OS, flash a new ROM etc. This is also used for OTA updates. Every Android device comes with a stock recovery but those are always very limited and not very useful for modding; most importantly, they don't allow installing firmware that is not signed by the manufacturer, so you can't install custom ROMs with those. That's why people install a custom recovery. There are several popular custom recoveries, such as CWM and TWRP.
  • Fastboot. This is a very simple boot mode. It has no user interface, it just accepts commands via a special USB protocol and returns responses. From here you can change things you can't normally touch through recovery, like the boot logo. You can also wipe internal partitions from here (strongly advised if you're switching to a wholly different ROM). This mode is also how you usally flash a custom recovery (although there are other methods too). You can even flash an entire ROM from here (thus skipping the recovery entirely) if the ROM is packaged in a way that allow this.
These are standard boot modes present on all Android devices out there. Motorola Atrix has a few more proprieatary modes:
  • RSD. Using this mode you can flash even more things, like the bootloader. Problem with this mode is, there are next to no checks or restrictions or anything that would prevent you from doing something wrong or stupid. This is where a lot of people brick their phones if they're not careful or paying enough attention. This boot mode is very dangerous and should be avoided if at all possible.
  • NvFlash. You don't ever want to see this mode. Seeing it very likely means the phone is bricked. To my knowledge, nobody has figured out yet what to do with or how to use this mode, and for the time being only the Motorola service center can make use of this mode to fix your phone.

This is a brief description of boot modes. For more information please see other threads.

MROM 2.3.7 to Stock 2.3.4

Hello everybody,

Today I bought second-hand Motorola Atrix 4G with installed MROM [CM7] build:20121111. The bootloader is unlocked and the phone is rooted. I live in Bulgaria (Eastern Europe), but the phone comes from Great Britain and it's probably been locked to "Orange" carrier. Now the phone is unlocked, works with all carriers (here we have 3 carriers - Globul, Mtel and Vivacom). It's not AT&T version. On the phone box writes: "SM, MB860, GB, ORANGE, DTG".

Because I am a connoisseur of Motorola I want to back the original/stock ROM with Blur interface ... I guess 2.3.4 Gingedbread. I want to know how can I do this safety? Which ROM I must use, which is the right one for my phone? Аnd last but not least which method to use? Please give me instructions how to proceed.

I have already installed RSD Lite 5.6 and the phone is recognized. I found these stock ROMs:
"1FF-olympus_emara-user-2.3.4-4.5.2A-74_OLE-31.20-release-keys-signed-NonEFIGSRetail-EU.sbf "
"1FF-olympus_emara-user-2.3.4-4.5.2A-74_OLE-31-release-keys-signed-Orange-GB.sbf.gz"

Will be a problem if I flash NonEFIGSRetail-EU, not Orange-GB, because I understood that the GB version doesn't support bulgarian language? Can I hard brick my phone?

And one more thing. Because the phone has been unlocked to all carriers here, is it possible after flash with these ROMs be locked again?

Thanks in advance!

MROM 2.3.7 to Stock 2.3.4

You flash it from recovery, like any other ROM.
I tried to flash it with CWM. Wipe dalvik/partition/reset, than I tried to install the "workdir.zip" from the internal sd card (was in folder DCIM) with removed SIM + external SD cards and 1-2 seconds after that the process stopped, wrote "update aborted" or something like that. Than I restored my recent backup of MROM. What do you think? Am I missing something?
