sorry for the double post...forgot to ask.
When going into TWRP to install a rom, I'm guessing it's best to perform a wipe first?
If so, which option is best (cache, dalvik cache, factory reset, system, etc.) and btw, what is the difference between the two cache options?

Thanks.
Ahh well if it's your first time flashing that particular ROM I strongly suggest what we call a "full wipe". Which is cache, dalvik, factory reset and system. After this you can simply "dirty flash" by wiping just cache and dalvik.

Cache is just like cache on your computer, chunks of data that are stored to be used again. Dalvik cache is the cache used to maintain the dalvik VM on your Android device.

is it a good idea to do a factory reset and system reset Wipe?
it seems like those would be the ones to keep....but i guess it makes since if the rom to be installed (like viper) would install into /system and then you'd have stock + viper installed in the same directory.

Oh it's not just a good idea it's pretty much required if you want to flash error free. Some ROMs leave remnants of themselves behind that do not play well with others.

However if you take a full Titanium backup of your phone prior to flashing you can restore things like your phonebook, games, accounts. email so that all of your user apps look exactly the same. Just don't restore /system data from the prior rom...like say for instance...restoring /system/lib/modules would be bad.

Again, a full wipe would only really be necessary under two conditions:

(1) you changed roms
(2) the base of the ROM changed.

I'm sure there's other situations but usually if I'm having an issue and someone says "just do a full wipe"...I'll start small. I'll wipe dalvik then cache. Then if that doesn't work I'll wipe /system. That will NOT delete your data. just your ROM. Then if I'm still having an issue it's factory reset time.

EDIT: I'm flashing flex's Stock w/ Goodies 3.43 right now as I type this. I only wiped dalvik and cache because I was coming from v3.42.

My girlfriend picked up and EVO with 3.16.651.3 on it... went through the steps to unlock with HTCDev, used fastboot to install the latest TWRP, but the touch screen will not work in recovery. I read about this happening with the latest update, but thought it was resolved (I rooted and S-OFFed a long time ago so I haven't had to deal with this before). How can I get this working so we can root and back everything up before I run Dirty Racun?

Update: Figured it out.... was using an out-dated TWRP. TWRP 2.4.4.0 resolved the issue.

I can't seem to get this to work. I unlocked the phone and when I go to flash the recovery it gets stuck on sending recovery. I tried it on another machine in my house and it got stuck on error something like cannot load unknown error. When I got into the acutal phone side of the phone I can use the menus and lock screen but when I try to use the homescreen it just shows me the HTC logo aswell.

Ok well try reinstalling HTC drivers. Click here for the 64bit version. And here for the 32 bit version

Then try flashing recovery again.

As for your AOKP ROM I'd say take it up in their thread. But I am curious: How did you get an AOKP rom on your phone without recovery? It IS possible to flash a ROM through fastboot but it just seems a little advanced for the people that usually come to this thread :)

So I got through all of the steps fine, until step 6. I connected the phone to the computer, had it connected as an external hard drive, copied the supersu and busybox zip files to the root file there (on the SD card I presume). I get into the win recovery project fine, click on the "install" tab, and the zip files simply don't show up there for me to select. I have verified that they're saved there, but they don't show up in the Team Win Recovery Project file manager.

Step 6 says "6) Flash the SuperSu zip and the Busybox zip listed in 4a and 4b." How exactly does one do that?

There is no need to mount it as an external drive. Either download them with your browser on your phone or plug your phone in. Do not mount it as an external drive. Copy/paste them to your sd card. Reboot to TWRP. Then flash the zips as instructed.

Also did you unmount your card after copying these files? And finally make sure you have "use external sd' checked in TWRP.

PS You don't HAVE to place those on your SD card but its good practice to NOT clutter up your internal storage with flashable zips. Some ROMs can be 600 meg or more and you will quickly find yourself running out of room.

So, it's not a matter of how they are downloaded or where they are saved, the zip files simply don't show up in the folders that they're saved in when browsing in the win recovery module under the 'install' button. I re-downloaded the files through the phones browser, verified that they are indeed in the downloads folder on the SD card, and when I try to select them in the win recovery, they simply don't show up. I copied them to the DCIM folder, as that is easily recognizable in the file structure,
and the files simply aren't showing up.

The win recovery image that I am using is
openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-jewel.img

The supersu zip that I'm putting on the sd card is
UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.25.zip

The Busybox zip I'm saving on the card is
Root_Busybox_1.20.2_Only.zip

I hate to sound ignorant and ask for someone to hold my hand, but I'm somewhat tech savvy and am not sure how to proceed from here with everything that I've tried.

When you boot into the TWRP, what exact buttons do you push from the TWRP first screen to flashing the files in your download folder on the SD card? I am hitting 'install' (it automatically goes to the /sdcard), then I click 'Download' (the default download folder on the sdcard, where I verified that the files exist), and the folder shows nothing. What might I be doing wrong?

Thanks for the writeup btw, and thanks in advance for your help!

I've honestly never seen this problem before. I thought at first it might be your SD card hence me asking you to unmount it and remount it. I've seen that fix SD card issues. But if you've saved it on your INTERNAL SD card and still can't see it it must be TWRP 2.5.0.0.

Try downgrading to 2.4.4.0. that's the version I'm using. You can downgrade by following step 3 and using THIS image instead of 2.5.0.0

here's a vid on flashing that seems to be quite complete:

Quick Question I was on SW version 3.16 with HBOOT 2.09 and I have successfully rooted my phone and installed the TWRP recovery. (Thanks for the guide) Is there a way for me to get SOFF now?

Also I tried flashing Stock with Goodies but I keep getting a bootloop. Is there anything special that I need to do other than flash the zip from recovery and do a wipe?
