everything works and big thank you for that! However if there were possibilities to add options to tweak the camera a bit more it would be perfect. I had better regular shots with zsl on and here there isn't that option. Thanks again!

You can install this as a normal apk, after the procedure described above in order to enable camera2 api. twrp is needed for flashing stuff to your phone, no need in this case. just modify the mentioned file and install the app, simple as that.

After unlocking u can pull the build.prop in pc in fastboot mode after editing build.prop u can insert it back to ur phome. In this way u can enable camera2 api without rooting.
But everytime miui updates, the build.prop also gets reset so u have to perform this everytime u get update. So in my opinion rooting is the best way. And magisk can hide itself so rooting ur phone is not bad at all.
Confirming portrait mode works with back camera.

OPs modded apk is working fine on stock miui
Probably didn't delete cache/data of the previous version ?
