I bought a new N7 a couple of nights ago and as soon as I turned it on it prompted me to update to 4.4. Easy peasy I was on 4.4.

My friend bought one tonight from the same store, same manufacturing batch, sealed box. When we turned it on and did the activation it prompted to update to 4.3??? I have no idea what the current version was since this was literally the unboxing. Checking for updates it says he is up to date.

He lives only a couple of miles away and it's two days later so the 4.4 update is available in the area. We weren't really trying to troubleshoot it but the device was rebooted a time or to and I would check for updates.

I know a day or two may resolve everything but it's the 4.3 update that I didn't see (I wasn't watching very closely) on my device, and the fact that it should have already been on 4.3.

Any ideas what might be happening?

That's the standard issue with OTA. Tell your friend to clear data of Google Play Services. If his system is still "Up to date." try unlocking bootloader and flashing KitKat factory image. Just YouTube it!

Go to settings, Apps, All, Google Settings Framework, DISABLE Google Services framework, Clear data then force stop, Then enable it again. Then go to settings about tablet, system update

Thanks. I know how to do those things. I was curious about the difference between my update and his given they were both brand new. Thanks for the replies.

First I understand I can manually put my friend on 4.4 but I'm trying to figure out what is going on. I returned my phone to JSS15R which is what he is on and boom, it updated to 4.4

What build does this model (2013) ship with. JSS15Q? Something older on earlier devices?

Unfortunately I have no idea what I started on but I don't recall doing/seeing a 4.3 update get installed.

I can't imagine that two devices with the same build month (08) would have different version of JB on them.

I'm leaning towards a return. Why screw around. Some devices are just possessed.

The first mandatory update is deceptive because it says you are getting 4.3 and you are already on 4.3. Any update to 4.3 will say you are getting 4.3.

What happened was they shipped JWR66N 4.3 signed with developer keys by mistake.

They then forced a small mandatory update (as in you have no choice, it won't let you continue until you update) to resign JWR66N with release keys. That is the update your friend got.

Some of the newer units shipped with JSS15J, which is already signed with release keys so they won't see the mandatory update.

As long as the tablet works, don't worry about it. They will all eventually get the 4.4 update.
