I am by no means an expert when it comes to rooting/unrooting but I have done it a few times on this phone so I am looking for help here.

A while back I got the message that a 4.3 update was available. I tried to install it on my rooted phone and it failed. So I followed the steps in the post "ODIN Installation (detailed)" in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963812. I assumed this was a first step in getting my phone into a state where it can be upgraded.

All of that was successful as far as I can tell. The phone rebooted and I still have root access.

Before I try to install the 4.3 update I want to verify my phone is in the correct state to do this. What can I look at on my phone to know if I am in a good state to try the upgrade? I just don't want to brick my phone.

If you have a custom recovery installed you are good to go... Otherwise you have no way to flash the update.

How would I verify that? I honestly don't know if I have that. All I do is enough to root my phone so I can do a few extra things, mainly full backups. I'm not sure if that process installs a custom recovery or not. I use the Samsung unified toolkit for most of the operations on my phone.

I think I found I do have a custom recovery. I did a reboot into one of the modes and it did say custom. Now my problem is when I choose the install of 4.3 the phone gives me the 10 second count down before reboot and install but never reboots. I tried wiping the cache (found that advice in a post online ) but still won't do the reboot to install

If you're expecting an Are you trying to flash an update zip or take the OTA? If you odined back to stock then you should not have a custom recovery and the OTA should install. If you are expecting the OTA and you have a custom recovery it will fail. I guess I'm not clear on how you are trying to update.

I am trying the OTA. I cleared the data for Google services framework and the install started but failed. On the screen where it failed at the top it says "android system recovery ".

I'm lost now, not sure what state I'm in or what to do now. Phone booted OK after the failed update.

What custom recovery do you have? Are you just trying to upgrade to 4.3?

Yes, I am trying to upgrade from 4.1.2 to 4.3

OK, what I have now is the custom clockwork recovery 6.0.3.1. I just installed this using the SkipSoft toolkit for Samsung. That installed fine. I then rebooted, cleared the google services framework and then checked for update again. The update downloaded, verified, and I then tried to install it. The install starts and asks me if I want to proceed with installing the unverified file, I select yes. That fails with this message...

I can reboot my phone and it seems to be fine but that's where I'm at for installing the update. Can't get past that, but farther than I got when I started.

If your rooted an have custom recovery an you try to accept an ota update it will fail... your best choice would be odin stock build an then try accepting the ota an should work fine

I can un-root and go back to stock recovery if I knew how.

I can certainly try the stock build, can you point me to the stock build to install using odin? Obviously what I have installed so far isn't working and I haven't been able to identify the correct files to install so far.

you can go here http://www.rwilco12.com/ click on downloads an find your device everything you will need is there
That site didn't work for me, once I selected Samsung S3, the directories are a bunch of letter codes and I wasn't sure which one to choose. I didn't want to just pick one and take a risk. So I used the skipsoft toolkit to flash the stock recovery. That went fine. I then tried to install the update and it started to install but failed at some point and just rebooted, no error or anything.

Is there a second option for installing 4.3? I wouldn't mind reformatting the whole phone as I think there are a few things that could use to be reset. I am fairly certain I have a good backup I can use to restore. I backed up using the skipsoft toolkit as well as Titanium Backup.

OK, I am not sure what I did wrong but I can't verify root.

What I did was wipe the data and cache paritions to fully reset the phone. I then downloaded a stock rom labelen 'L710VPUCMK3_L710SPRCMK3_L710VPUCMK3;, I got this from a forum at www.sammobile.com. I used odin 1.85 to flash that to the phone, it reported as successful and rebooted. I verified teh version was 4.3 after the phone booted. I also checked for updates a few times and it didn't find any more. Next I used odin to get root using CF-Auto-Root-d2spr-d2spr-sphl710.tar.md5. Here is the odin log:

<ID:0/004> Added!!
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> CF-Auto-Root-d2spr-d2spr-sphl710.tar.md5 is valid.
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..

The problem is I can't seem to verify root access. I downloaded 'root checker basic' and when I try to verify root, it tells me my system is running slow and it is trying to verify root, but it never does. Also, Titanium Backup seems to hang on verifying root access.

Sounds like superuser needs to update the binary. Open you superuser app or go the play store and update it. See if that works.
OK, I thing you're right. When I try to open supersu it immediately stops and won't open. Then I get a security warning at the top about access being blocked.

Can't update it in Google store, only option is to open. I got to find a way to update this and I think it'll solve my problem.
