SD is very important to me, as I had the terrible Google Nexus 5X that decided to just die on me one day. My storage was encrypted. There was no way to get my data. I used the freezer trick several times and got it to boot long enough to pull my necessary data. Never again will I buy a phone where the company is removing features to save money.

We're not Apple users.

They are removing sd card not to save money but to make us spend more for higher storage variant.
I mean even 100$ phones have sd card support, there's no reason why flagship phones shouldn't have SD card support.

Would love a V50 or G8 and honestly have been looking at the G7's as well. I do not keep much on my phone, as I am much more dependent on cloud storage (or even a NAS at home), but I get the desire/need for an SD card. Personally would struggle more by not having a headphone jack as I do appreciate wearing cans while listening to this phone.

Your last comment was priceless...We're not Apple users. I have an iPad that I use for surfing, running quotes, etc. Would consider a Surface Pro, but when my iPad does everything I NEED it to do (including be a royal PITA), why spend the additional $5-600??? I do appreciate the closed ecosystem for Apple and for many, it works great! But their menu system is unlike no other; so much of their stuff is proprietary; even their desktops are getting to the point that you cannot upgrade without using GENUINE Apple hardware. I can build a desktop, for under $3K, that will let me do EVERYTHING their $4-5000 desktop will do, including but not limited to videoediting.
For me, personally, I am in the $12-1400 range, dependent upon cost of video card.. .find me an Apple desktop at THAT price!
Sorry to get off on a tangent but the more I use Apple (kid has iPhone, as well), the more I truly dislike using their products. Definitely not an Apple "user" here, either.

If you're spending over 1k on a desktop nowadays, you are absolutely blowing your money. Even a GOOD gaming PC will cost you sub $800. That is if you spend the 30 minutes to connect parts in a computer case. Mine cost about $800 in parts and I have 64gb of ram. It's massively overkill.

Why bother with a surface pro or an iPad when you can get a very good laptop for much cheaper? I never understood the tablet fad as I have a computer in almost every room I inhabit, and my cellphone otherwise. A tablet is just a less powerful laptop with no keyboard lol

I'm a tech. I just put together a phenomenal desktop system for about $600. Unless a PC is at NASA, you don't need 900GB of RAM and a 56.8ghhz processor complete with Liquid Nitrogen cooling system. ?

You also shouldn't pay $25,000 for a $700 equivalent computer because it has a picture of a rotten fruit on the side with zero expansion slots and no upgradability.

I apologize for being off topic, but I need some advice. I want to upgrade, preferably to another LG. I don't want dual screen. Also, all the ones I see are Sprint unlocked, AT&T unlocked, etc. I want something international that I can unlock the bootloader and root. Should I just start looking at Pixels? Any recommendations? Thanks.

Mods. I understand if this gets deleted or moved.

V35 and V40 can be bootloader unlocked and rooted with exploit. See those XDA forums for more information.

Pricing my desktop out at around $1400 (not purchased yet). Part of my increases were needing a fairly decent graphics card and a CPU that can multi-task very well (running Adobe programs...). Also, boot drive is a 250Mb Samsung M2, along with 2-2TB backup drives for pictures currently being worked on and hotswappable drive bay to back them up, off of computer. Running 32 Gb RAM. Probably overkill but coming from a Phenom X4, 16 Gb, that has been dying a slow death for a while.

Laptop - unfortunately, same predicament. Finding a screen with fairly decent color accuracy pushes me over the $1K mark almost immediately, and that is with Dell or Lenovo, heavily discounted. Move over to Clevo/Sager/MSI, and I am in the $16-1700 price range. I also need something with a pen (client signatures) so it was either buy a touch screen, Surface, or iPad. As much as I am not a fan of Apple, the screen in the Air is phenomenal and it costs around $450, $50 for keyboard, and $8-100 for pen. So I can work on what I am supposed to be doing AND ger some editing time in, all while away from home. Not great solution but $500+ cheaper than a laptop...

What are you looking for in your next phone? SD card? Headphone jack? Best camera? Super bright screen? Most colorful screen? There are phones out there with locked bootloaders that can be rooted.
Why are you wanting to achieve root? I would love another LG but development seems to be lacking on the V35 or V40. Because I am very fond of Havoc and AOSP/Lineage ROMs, I stay on this phone.

" ONLY USE MAGISK 18.X ON OREO TWRP-FLASHABLE ZIPS! "

Does mean anything above 18 as well? Or ONLY an 18 build
18.0 or 18.1. Use the one attached to the WTF Instructions post.

After you get 20h TWRP flashable zip installed, and get it rooted with 18.x, THEN you can update Magisk to current version. But you can't start with a newer version. And if you went to another Oreo TWRP flashable zip, you would have to temporarily downgrade your Magisk first back to 18.x.

I ended up having no way to get LgUp to work.....so I just clean flashed 10c, then E, then H and tried Magisk 21,3 but it didnt flash.....but when I went back into TWRP and reflashed it, it worked....seems to be fine and working well....and then ended up with some issues so I tried it again

went TWRP 10c to E F G H.....tried Magisk 18.1 flashed success but never showed up with magisk manager and no root

Tried 18.0 from WTF didnt flash got error....only one that I can get to root is 21.3 but only after flashing it after initial reboot failure of getting root an then a second time works...

Very flustered!

So, I had followed the original frankenstein instructions to flash twrp and I actually had US998, but had to switch to LS998 to use sprint. Now I'm moving to a different carrier whose SIM card wont work with LS998 and I attempted to move back to US998.
However, I'm not sure I followed the right instructions.

I used LGUP Dual to flash US99820e_02_0910.kdz and I'm getting boot warnings and errors about encryption and the instructions want me to reset the phone.

Which set of instructions do I fall back on now? This thread? The WTF thread? Or do I suck it up that I've lost everything on the phone and go with the reset?

The warning screen during boot is just to scare you because you don't have a stock phone. It doesn't mean anything is wrong... it's just a scare tactic. As ChazzMatt says, it's a badge of honor to say that you're not bound by the dumb carriers... so don't worry about it. For that matter, read it carefully and you'll see it's just saying what you already know - that your phone is not stock. That's a GOOD thing in most of our opinions!

For bootloader unlock purposes, use the US998 KDZ versions with pre-July 2018 security patch: I recommend 20a or 20b.
Look at the names for dates in the title. You can always update to newer firmware later, AFTER bootloader is unlocked. Flashing a newer KDZ will not relock your bootloader. See bottom of post for instructions on how to downgrade to earlier firmware.

ONLY USE MAGISK 18.X ON OREO TWRP-FLASHABLE ZIPS!

If you are installing/updating latest US998 firmware for the first time after bootloader unlock/root, you should flash 20e zip (below), then 20f zip, 20g zip, 20h zip back-to-back in TWRP, then flash Magisk. If you go straight to 20h via TWRP-flashable zip from very early Oreo, you will most likely have problems. There were massive changes starting with US998 20f and you need the prior 20e as foundation before going on to 20h. You should also do this if coming from a custom ROM.

Also flashing magisk in between each and rebooting in between each is not needed. You can add all (zips) to the queue and flash at once then flash magisk and then reboot. Tested this method with the us998 zips and works just fine

Flash the "ROM" with latest TWRP, after wiping caches. Reflash Magisk immediately afterwards, before rebooting to system. It's just stock KDZ but in TWRP-flashable version. Not debloated nor meant to be updated in the future. It's just a very convenient mechanism to have newer stock firmware instead of using dev patched LGUP to flash partitions, etc. Go to this thread and thank him.

Screenshots below are for previous firmware and only demonstrate how to upgrade full KDZ using LGUP.

    __________

HOW TO (temporarily) DOWNGRADE BACK TO OREO FOR BOOTLOADER UNLOCK
(or DOWNGRADE BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE PIE)

    1) DOWNLOAD FIRMWARE AND DEV PATCHED LGUP

    * Download Oreo KDZ you wish to install -- for bootloader unlock would be US998 20a or 20b. You can update to more current firmware AFTER unlocking bootloader on early Oreo.
(If you just don't like Pie, then choose the most recent Oreo KDZ, which is US998 20h at the top.)

    * DOWNLOAD THIS DUAL VERSION OF DEV PATCHED LGUP, made by @tecknight:
    https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=11410963190603845019
(Or use attached file from bottom of this post. Thanks to @tecknight! Please go here and click the THANK BUTTON!)

    _________________

    2) INSTALL DEV PATCHED LGUP

    0. Uninstall any prior LGUP you have. Uninstall anything like Uppercut, which no longer works and causes conflicts with this Dev Patched LGUP.

    1. Extract LGUP_DualMode.zip to a folder on your PC.

    2. Browse into the folder and launch LGUP_Store_Frame_Ver_1_14_3.msi.
Follow the prompts to complete the install.

    3. In that folder, right click and select "Run as Administrator" on "SetDev.bat" to set LGUP to developer mode

    4. Launch LGUP using the desktop shortcut, NOT the Install folder shortcut.

Choose Process : PARTITION DL (all partitions) or REFURBISH

    ----------------------------
    3) DOWNGRADING/UPGRADING ANY LG V30/V30+/V30S TO OREO KDZ FIRMWARE

    1) Go into download mode (power off completely, then hold volume up button while plugging in USB cable)
    2) open patched LGUP and flash OREO KDZ to DL PARTITION mode. In the pop up box "Select All". Use the attached patched LGUP in this post.
You can also use REFURBISH mode, if you wish.
    3) Master Reset (post 101 of Frankenstein thread)
    5) DONE.

It's fairly easy. Most people breeze right through this. But if you have any problems, go through this list:

    • Make sure you in download mode BEFORE opening the patched LGUP file.
This is at the top of the list as some people forget to do that. The remainder are in no particular order. If that doesn't work,
    • Try different USB port,
    • Try different USB cable,
    • Try different computer.
    • Reinstall LG mobile drivers on your PC.
    • Reinstall dev patched LGUP again, making sure the files are placed where they need to go (LG Electronics folder, etc).
    • REBOOT THE COMPUTER.

If you ask for help, that's the list of items we are going to give you anyway. ;)

    J2QAOrh.png

WARNING: In LGUP do NOT go messing with modes not mentioned in these instructions. Especially do NOT use Chip Erase.

    3) ChipErase: Dangerous, This will erase IMEI/efs, Do not try this if you do not have a NV backup.

No, not worth it. It's just September security update. We'll have November in a few days (probably), and TWRP flashable.

Sent via open market LG US998 V30/V30+

Yep im working on the us998 20E flashable now. Ive have it uploaded later tonight when i get off work. Ill also be taking over the kdz flashable zips for us and verizon from now
    9
    Added US99820b_03_0524 KDZ (2.76Gb)

Right now with this full KDZ, if you are already bootloader unlocked and rooted, to update you need to flash via dev patched LGUP with DL Partition method -- but leave off "recovery" partition to keep TWRP custom recovery. Then in TWRP, reflash Magisk, the "no encryption" file and the "don't check root" file.

If you don't do that, and flash the full KDZ, you will also have to reinstall TWRP.

If we do get a TWRP flashable zip, I'll post the link here in this thread. Then you can just flash THAT in TWRP like a ROM... Until then you can NOT flash this with TWRP. Do NOT post messages that you cannot flash in TWRP. I'm telling you that already. ;)

If you are not bootloader unlocked and rooted, then just flash via LGUP with "upgrade".
