USB 3.1 Hubs / Dex alternatives

I just noticed on Ebay, that there are alternative USB hubs that say they can do a few things that Dex can't for literally a fraction of a cost.

Advantages of these would be over Dex:
USB 3.0 ports vs. Dex 2.0 only
4k Output (I saw on youtube at least one professional reviewer confirming 4k screen mirroring using Samsung HDMI 2.0 adapter. )

Of course, I wonder if there'd be a risk forcing s8 plus to power a screen and USB devices without the Dex; could it heat up and do a note 7?

I'm waiting for my s8, which I should get in a couple of days. After that, I'm gonna give a go with some of these. What are your thoughts? Has anyone tried, or willing to give it a go?

PS. I live in the middle of nowhere, and eBay takes a month to deliver. So it will be at least a month before I can update back!

as of right now, the dex enviroment only runs on the dex unit. I haven't seen anywhere where somehow has been able to trigger it to run yet on a device like these. I have one and all you get is screen mirroring which isn't remotely close.

I know its an old thread but since a lot of time has passed I was wondering if anyone has tried the alternatives and could confirm if they work with the dex environment. Thanks!

I can confirm that this launches the Samsung Dex environment and just screen mirroring, I have been using it for months without issue, I paid around $50 when I first purchased it.

There were quite a few that worked at enabling DEX. But the Oreo betas included code to stop that. Now most of them dont do anything, and the ones that do only do screen mirroring.

Once the Beta is over and most people are under Oreo, I expect some more DEX replacements will come out.
