USB Host support

At least you can sell it as is and get a few bucks. There's always someone interested in a mint screen, buttons, cable, charger and even a battery. You can check if it was or wasn't the reason for your faulty nook using a voltmeter.
Voltmeter shows a charge, but I didn't check that before I tried to recharge it. Not sure about that but I did actually install a new battery with a soldering iron. No change.

So, I accept that it's dead but I have a post mortem question about the USB Host Switcher app.

When Verygreen came out with this app in 2011 he included a note that I'll quote here:

Now the important part: When the Nook is in host mode, it drives 5V vbus off the connector at all times. If you connect the nook to a PC in this state, the PC will try to drive it's own vbus. Last time I tried to do this, my usb port in the nook fried! You've been warned! But that was before I had the host mode working and it might have been caused by a number of other things I was doing at the time too. Anyway I am not very keen on repeating this experiment again. If you are curious and decide to try it anyway regardless of the warning, make a comment and tell me what happened
So, my question is in the years since this came out, were there any modifications to Host Switcher that might address this issue?

When this first happened, one of my first attempts to charge was to direct connect to my pc usb port. Is it possible that I fried the nook usb port as described?

Nothing I can do about it now, but just curious about it.

I don't recall any seeing any update to USBHostSwitcher since I got it 2.5 years ago.

FWIW, recently I accidentally connected my Nook ST to my PC USB Hub and then to the wall charger, while the Nook was still in USB Host mode: the Nook did not charge (as can be expected) but instead discharged rapidly (much faster than when I use the USB port for USB Audio), but afterward USB port still works fine.

The prior comments about selling the old nook for parts got me thinking, so I bought a used nook myself. I got it running the way I want, which involved using ADB install to sideload some apps, because stock nook won't let you side load otherwise (unknown source). Now I'd like to also get usbhostswitcher going but, even though sideloading seems to work for other apps, it won't for usbhostswitcher. (ADB Install <path>\usbhostswitcher.apk just hangs up with no error message.)

My question now is, does the nook need to be rooted to run usbhostswitcher? I'd rather not root if I don't have to .

In order to enable USB host mode your Nook needs to run a kernel version that supports USB host mode such as verygreen's kernel in his CM11 ROM builds. Simply rooting your Nook's stock ROM is not sufficient.

help please

sorry to bother you or any other nook masters on here.
I am running verygreen's kernel 3.0.31 -hummingbird-green+ jun 13 2013
cyanogen 10.1
i have usb storage in storage menu as well as apps that can mount devices and storage. I also have the usbhostswitcher app as well as another one I found on here that helps for this.

I have the female to female adapter...yet no signs of it working whether I connect a mouse, usb flash drive, etc. I bought the adapter from the ebay link from verygreen post and ordered another one from diff seller today just in case...
Any thing I need besides the apps? Also anyone get a usb - to - ethernet adapter to work for this nook?
thank you all for any input

My current nook isn't rooted, but before I fried my last one it was rooted and usbhostswitcher worked fine for connecting a usb flash drive using a f-f adapter. Haven't tried a mouse.

As for an ethernet adapter, I've been trying to find a way to do that since September with no luck. I don't think the nook will do it no matter what ROM might be tried. If you find a way, I'd like to know also. I can do it on my iPad and my Samsung galaxy, but not the nook.

dan the search continues....many ask y would someone want that for me its simple - availability and too much wifi in my area I prefer to use my router without wifi. I am crtain the nook can support it maybe just need a certain ethernet to usb adapter and not a generic one. I will try to get a new f-f adapter as nothing happens currently on my nook even with usbhostapps.

Yeah, I got the same question when I was looking.

Another alternative might be reverse tether, but nothing I've found works for the nook, except for one thing I found worked for browsing but not for apps. It needed two apps running on the pc host and it was buggy, needed me to access the apps on the pc every time to enable it and didn't work for everything. It turned out to be too much trouble for me.

Still, I'm puzzled about your issue. As long as host switcher says you're in host mode it should work. I was using ES File Explorer to access my flash drive.

were you also on kernel 3.0.31 -hummingbird-green+ jun 13 2013
or another similar verygreen kernel/cm?

hmmm i will have to see if a new f-f adapter will solve it.

Don't remember for sure, but I think it was CM11. It was a recovery ROM I got from AFN. Just that, the host switcher app and a f-f adapter and the flash drive worked.

Hi verygreen.
Thanks for your app, it seems to be integrated in all of the ROMs now.

I have a major problem, the touch screen on my Nook does not work properly. I used a BT Keyboard and Mouse when I realised the touch was going, but now the touch is almost completely gone. I want to flash a ROM that allows the official HDMI cable to work since I recently got one. I have launched the USB Host app via ADB but in the past I needed to touch the screen to enable USB Host (to use a wired keyboard/mouse to then enable a BT KB & Mouse).

Is there a way to actually enable USB Host mode without touching the screen via the ADB commands?
Thank you in advance!

I tried to look for the answer as much as I could but no results. Does anyone know if is there a possibility to use Nook HD as USB host and charge it simultaneously?
