Trouble mounting USB

I flashed the Tiamat 1.1.6 kernel last night and am purring at 1.5Ghz. Cool. However, when I plug in a flash drive, it doesn't mount to /usbdisk as expected. I notice in Astro that /usbdisk show permissions of d--. I was expecting more open permissions. Is this what is thwarting me? I think I pushed out the vold.fstab as directed.

I haven't used the kernel, but if usbdisk is there that means they problably added the directory in the init.

d = bad, that's correct. If the thumb drive worked, you'd see it change to full perms. My guess, without looking at the kernel itself or the vold.fstab, is that the thumb drive itself is problematic. First, make sure it's FAT32. Second, YMMV on thumb drives - I have an HP 125w thumb drive which works, but my Sandisk thumb drive does not. The latter is one of those "light up" thumb drives and my guess is that it requires more power than the Xoom can provide.

And verify the vold.fstab, as well. If it's not altered, it definitely won't mount properly.

Lastly, check that the cable itself is not a dud. Easy way to do that is to connect up a USB keyboard. If that works, then at least you know the cable works.

I went back through and verified all the individual components work on other devices: USB cable that came with the Xoom, female-to-female adapter, 4GB thumb drive (FAT32). I also tried 2 other small storage devices. No luck. Its as if there is no attempt to mount the device.

I also verified the vold.fstab has the expected line from the update. Boy I want to get this working to use with my digital cameras in the field.

What cable did you get?

I got my cable in 1 week, and just tried it out. My scandisk thumb-drive does not work but my other one does. Thanks for the hack and the cable link :)

Not a problem! Sounds like you have the same issue I do. Is that one of those light-up Sandisk thumb drives? I bet it needs more power to work.

USB cable that came with the Xoom plus a female to female adapter.
That might be the problem. The Xoom cable might not give you OTG capabilities.

My biggest respect!

roebeet,
your USB hack is fantastic! I used my old 250GB external hard drive (separate power supply), formatted it to FAT32 with Fat32Formatter, connected it to the USB cable you recommended from eBay, and I can mount it with the Xoom (see screenshot). I didn't have time to put anything on it but the free space is all there (~230GB).

BTW - screenshot was taken with Fahrbot's Screenshot ER

I have a PNY 8gb flash drive with no lights or anything and it doesn't see to work. Its FAT32. MY sandisk SD card reader with a light works like a charm.

Anyone have any suggestions on the PNY drive?

Just tried a 500 gb usb drive-no power (does not need a power supply) and works fine. Appears to be r/w. However, difficult to get to the actual directory in which the usb disk is mounted. The default mt point appears to be /mnt/sdcard which is the same sd card partition used by android file transfer on the mac.

@callif, could you let us know the make/model of your 500gb hdd? I thought the xoom didn't handle power over USB so found your post interesting!

I just plugged in a WD passport 60gb model number WD600U017 and worked perfectly. Drive powered up and was able to view files through root explorer.
