Has anybody tried the 'USB Configuration' setting in Developer Settings? It will probably on 'Charging' and needs to be changed to 'MTP'

See more here:

I tried this and the issue still persists. I'm concerned now because I flashed the a1 rom on a retail x4 - I fear Motorola would deny me a warranty claim for that reason. Anyone know if it's possible to downgrade with a locked bootloader ?

Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app

I just tried it (I selected MTP). No dice. The computer doesn't recognize the device, and under Settings - Connected Devices it still says "Charging" and it's not editable.

Are you getting the Notification on your phone when you connect it to PC? (You might have to expand the Notification Shade to see it).

Oreo 100% has a big USB connection bug. Some manufacturers have fixed it in their ROMs. I still keep running into it on Custom ROMs though. On last weeks OP3T RR build it was working properly for me for the first time. In this weeks build it's broken again. The workaround has always been to enable MTP in 'USB Configuration'. If that's not working either there's nothing you can do.

Looks like Motorola dropped the ball during internal testing.

i haven't updated the phone yet, afraid that i will be stuck with no adb/mtp. I mostly use it for andromeda/substratum rootless. So should i just wait till google or Motorola come with a fix or just talk to Project fi and exchange the phone... Plus i didnt buy the warranty..

I tend to agree with you, but the Fi support person said they aren't aware of a lot of reports of Moto X4 users having this problem. She could be right - it might be just a handful out of all Moto X4 devices that have this problem after the 8.1 April update, in which case the bug is probably specific to a rare hardware variant.

I'm really curious to know if there's anyone with an X4 with that update who has NOT experienced the USB connectivity problem. There are several reports on the Lenovo forum of this bug, but no one yet saying they got the update and haven't experienced the bug.

This is the same question i've been asking too, trying to understand the issue better. Some people say it works for them and always has. (Pixel, Nexus, OP3 etc) Others using the same ROM and build have had the opposite experience. It's a really strange issue and hard to pin down.

Right, but none of those phones are Moto X4 (although I can't get your google productforums links to load). The question I have is whether all Moto X4's with this update have the problem, or only some of them.

Google "Oreo MTP"

The product forum links should be on the first page. Every result is a problem like this one. I've been tracking this for months. :(

So I contacted Google, and they refused to let me open a ticket unless I tried it after performing a factory reset.
Then I contacted Motorola, and they wouldn't contact the developers, but offered to send me a replacement phone.

But the Project Fi team at Google got back to me, and their engineers asked me for a debug log. So maybe they are actually looking into this.

I'll keep you posted.

Make sure you when you save the log, it includes you testing connectivity, disabling screenlock, testing connectivity again, then re-enabling screenlock showing that it breaks it.

Motorola is already taking steps to investigate. See Lenovo thread. Someone posted some of their debug log as well.

Same issue here. Project Fi moto x4, usb functionality trashed after 8.1 update. It was working fine on 8.0. Only charging works now, no notifications on phone or in Windows. I've tried disabling the lock screen, it did not have any effect :(

EDIT: correction... disabling the lock screen did indeed work, after a device reboot was performed. Still not a good situation though as my business exchange account requires a lock screen with password etc.

You can activate lock after reboot.

Thanks so much! I was about to go crazy after I realized the 8.1 update caused my Google Fi Moto X4 phone to not show the menu option anymore, no ADB debugging, etc, but went straight to charging. I don't usually have the screen lock on, but recently enabled it while traveling for security.

After disabling screen lock completely and rebooting, USB connection options work as expected.

Same issue here, took the OTA to 8.1 just now on my Fi Moto X4. I called Fi Support, they said it's a known issue and that an email will be sent out about it... but good god how do you not catch this in QA, either through Google or through Motorola? My experience with Fi's $250 hardware has been so, so horrendously bad. Had 4 5Xes bootloop on me, the USB on those never worked, finally got to the x4, has two bad cameras instead of 1 good one, and now this. If I were Fi I would be ashamed of all of it.

The moment I lock my phone, USB gets disabled again.
