Having trouble even in the easiest of steps

Hello all, first time poster, and just bought the hd+, but its native OS is so slow that I decided to try out the rooting method for google play store access.

First step was to try out the steps outlined, which involved first getting the adb enabled- however, I am not sure what is going on- I went ahead and installed the android interface with the files that the OP uploaded. However, after I connect the nook, the nook keeps on detecting the device and not detecting it and detecting it constantly, giving me about 25+ autorun panels for the device- but I see nothing when I type "adb devices" in the cmd prompt. Also, looking at the nook hd device, the android robot shows only a "..." instead of a "+" sign, like it should be when adb is enabled.

Also, I am lost on how to "install" the android sdk on the computer- In the steps, they tell you to install the file with the provided .exe file. What exe file? I noticed that there was a whole bunch of exe files in the tools directory, but none of them show an "install.exe" that all steps indicate.

I am definitely a newb when it comes to rooting and whatnot, and to be honest, although I love the hardware quality of the nook hd+, the slow OS (terrible on pdfs) and the complexity involving rooting and whatnot is forcing me to perhaps go for the ipad mini (even though it is more expensive with worse display specs).. Help me out! Thanks again.

First, those popup panels are for the Nook G: device that you don't want or need. In device manager, go to USB controllers and there will be a USB mass storage device. Disable it. That will stop those annoying popups.

Second, I was just explaining in my first post how to get the drivers installed. You still have to install the Android SDK. Typing 'adb devices' on the command prompt will give you error messages until you get the Android SDK installed properly on your PC. If you can't understand or follow the B&N site's instructions, search the web for 'install android sdk' and you will find lots of tutorials. The problem with the B&N instructions is that it is trying to tell you how to set up for developing apps for the Nook. All you want is adb working.

Try this, I took this from another site for you:

Download the SDK from the link in B&N.

After you get it installed, click on SDK Manager and it will ask you to install packages. Select the following and leave all others.

Android SDK tools
Android SdK Platform Tools

Click on continue and follow the on screen prompts until all of the packages are installed and it finishes.

Edit: Here is is link to an old version, that is much smaller and should still work and you can don't have to do the above.

Make sure you have installed the Android Composite ADB Interface under Android Phone in Device Manager driver per my first post.

Open a command prompt in Windows. CD to c:\android-sdk\platform-tools (or wherever you installed the SDK). If you set your path to that directory, you can have the prompt set for any directory, like where your apks are stored. Type 'adb devices'. Your serial number should be listed.

Continue on from my first post.

EDIT: I just updated my first post with some of this.

Something is a little odd. Am I the only one who didn't find an install.exe file in the Win7 Android SDK package? I didn't, and took a stab at just running the SDK Manager.exe file directly. It seemed to work (I selected and installed what was identified), but now I can't find an Android install directory under \Program Files (86)\ so I can add that to the $PATH.

Mine is under program files\android\android-sdk.

But now I cannot get the driver installed. I kept getting "Windows was unable to install your unknown device". I used USBDeview to unistall all B&N, Nook and Android drivers, but I can't get the HD+ driver to install. I am getting the BNTV600 showing up other "Other Devices". Typing 'adb devices' in the cmd window shows nothing.

I remember for the Nook Tablet I had to put a device code into the adb_usb.ini file. Is it possible the same needs to be done for the HD+?

+1...still! Got XP, deleted all my old drivers, deleted SDK and Eclipse and Java and started over. Followed the B&N directions carefully. Have PATHs set. Got my ini file right. Still no devices. I only get a generic storage volume, but when I delete the resulting USB Mass Storage device, I get a chance to put BNTV in as an Android Composite. BUT I get both a Android Composite AND a BNTV600 'OTHER' device. THe BNTV and the MTP devices won't install, and the drivers will only return a not-for-your-device error. I can stop them from autoloading by telling them to stop trying. USB debug is enabled. All were rebooted after installing drivers...AGH!!!!

My guess is that it should not be coming back with a second BNTV device after I get it installed as Composite. See the attached. I'm at a loss.

I already did that device id change for you in the modded driver attached to the first post.

You need to uninstall any driver that has 2080 in the device ID. They may be in Android phone, other, portable devices, or USB controllers. How you tell if it has that ID is to right click the device, go to properties, and select details. It will show the device ID. After you have uninstalled all those, unplug and replug the cable. Your PC should rediscover your devices. Pick the BNTV600 and put my driver in it. Ignore any others that have the yellow exclamation or say need drivers. If the annoying drive keeps popping up, disable the USB mass storage device that has 2080 in it.

I have new instructions in the OP. Try that. Also see my last post about drivers.

I have no USB Mass Storage Devices with the ID 2080 in it, or any other device as far as USBDeview tells me. I have Android Phone>Android ADB Interface showing up with a Yellow '!' (This device cannot start), and Other Devices>BNTV600 also with a Yellow '!'. Android Phone was installed using the ...\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver\android_winusb.inf file via the Legacy devices method.

USBDeview shows only the BNTV600 as having Device ID 2080. But trying to install the driver gets me "Windows was unable to install your BNTV600".

Uninstall that android adb interface. I don't know what USBDeview is so don't know whether to trust it. Use my driver to install the device as described.

No improvement. Windows is still giving me "Windows was unable to install your BNTV600".

USBDeview, BTW, is a great freeware tool that lists every USB device and driver installed on your PC. Very thorough and reliable. Been around for a while. Of course I double check everything from Device Manager.

Are we absoluetely sure this works even on 2.0.2?

Yes. That is the driver for your android composite and why it is not working!

Alas, when I uninstalled the USB Composite Device, I lost the Android Composit Device too. I think they are linked...

So I reconnected the Nook and got a chance to install:
1) MTP (ignored)
2) Android Composite Devece (tried to use your driver but was rebuffed, use the driver from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1991125 which installed
3) Got another BNVT600 device pop up, no drivers worked
4) Got another MTP pop up, no drivers worked.

No devices in ADB...drivers back to configuration shown a few posts ago.

Edit 2: Just for completeness, I used USBDeview (awesome program, thx tonyp!) and deleted every driver on my USB port that had anything to do with mass storage, USB composite, any phone or mobile device, Samsung devices, and anything android (since it shows non-active drivers) and restarted, same result. It seems the two BNVTs compete with each other in some way...

I don't know what to say to you two. As I said in the opening post of this thread, I almost gave up and returned this device early on because of having adb issues.

It does work on 2.0.2 and the issue is with your PC, not the device.

But I can advise you to keep trying as it is worth it for this awesome device.

Well, it installed. I got the single USB "beep" indicating success at the USB level. Device Manager now shows this under Android Phone>Android Composite ADB Interface. ADB devices still shows no devices.

Under Devices and Printer in Win7, it is identified as BNTV600.

And shows as working? Try unplugging and replugging. And adb works, just says no devices? Do adb kill-server and try again.
