Personally, if I were you...I'd go with Cricket, At&t, Straight Talk (At&t), or Total Wireless(Verizon), because T-Mobile (MetroPCS) coverage is not all that great.

And I had cricket before but with Metro I get 2 unlimited lines for $75 taxes a d fees included

Can confirm VZW prepaid model fully functional on ATT postpaid SIM via $2 eBay unlock code. eBay seller implies unlock will allow data functionality only. I have data and inbound/outbound calling. No need to manually toggle 3G or manually set APN.

Device throws a "non-verizon Sim" warning at boot, but it is not persistent.

Oh okay. Does your MetroPCS variant work well with them?
Yes, why wouldn't it

You just need to call and get the IMEI registered to the account on Metro if they ask tell them it's an unlocked Moto E4 and you'll be good to go.
I got it to work. I just hate that MetroPCS doesn't allow customers to just swap sim cards without contacting them first

Failed attempt to unlock bootloader/root (Verizon XT1767)

So I took a gamble trying to unlock the bootloader/root with Sunshine, but no dice. The app says that the phone passes the tests and the bootloader can be unlocked, however, to unlock the bootloader, it needs root. Of course, if I had root, then the bootloader would have already been unlocked! Classic Catch-22. Can't have one without the other. If it worked, I would have gladly paid the $25 for Sunshine. If only a temp root could be forced.

Yes, Unlock for about $2 on eBay. Will work with Tmo & ATT, and their MVNOs. You may, or may not, need to switch to 3G for first call to register (I had to), then you can switch back to LTE without any further problems. You also may need to manually add APN, but I did not need to.
It's a pretty solid phone and can be had for $40 at Walmart, or price-match elsewhere. Really stinks that the bootloader can't be unlocked. I didn't think it would bother me...but it really does. Oh well, I knew it before I bought it. Will be a good backup.

Hi I brought one, got unlock code but i cant get past this activation screen? Verizon, thing is im o/seas also help?? what do i do? i did enter unlock code :( Nvm working now turned it off and on strange

only if we force moto/vz to unlock bootloader in this phone.
I have a Verizon E4 XT 1767 that I sim unlocked with a code from Ebay. I don't know anything about flashing and bootloaders, but while playing around with the phone I managed to get to a selection that you can pick to unlock the bootloader after enabling developer options.

Here are the steps after enabling developer options:
Settings > Developer options > OEM unlocking "Allow the bootloader to be unlocked". If I turn that on it gives a warning to cancel or enable. It does allow me to enable.

Does this allow the bootloader to be unlocked like you guys want or is this just another way to sim unlock the phone? As I said before, I don't know anything about this stuff so pardon me if this option does nothing for the bootloader.

It doesn't let you unlock the bootloader

If anyone looking for the e4 cheap (in the US) can wait, I wouldn't be surprised if there are black Friday deals on it this year, like I believe the G4 Play had last year.

For those looking to unlock the bootloader and root, on any phone, don't get the Verizon version. Either get one from another carrier, or get a retail, carrier unlocked model.

what's the probability of an exploit being found? I imagine this phone is quite popular (Verizon) considering the price.
It seems to me that the development community in general has tended towards buying devices that include a manufacturer approved path to unlocking in the past few years. Presumably this is because there are more of these options available, and the difficulty in finding exploits may have increased as well. Ultimately I think there are fewer developers working on finding this type of exploit, and the ones who are best at it are spending their time on more rewarding stuff.

What that means to you and I: If bootloader unlock is a dealbreaker for you, never purchase a device that doesn't have either a manufacturer unlock path or an already known unlock exploit. Pretty much means VZW and ATT branded devices are non-starters.

Are there exploits to get past a locked boot loader? I've never do ne ot but have been told by devs that it can't really be done. I ran into this last winter with a certain variant of the Sammy J3.

Even if it is possible many devs won't spend a lot of time on a cheap device. (I'm a bit different, I've spent too many hours working on recovery and root on the ZTE 'Obamaphone). I like the E4, for a basic entry level device it's got some great features.

It, and a few other phone have taught me to check for a root method before making that great buy. I have little use for an unrooted phone so I gave it away. I only paid 20 for it (new but used by a friend for 3 days)

Occasionally there are - the Verizon "exclusive" version of the Moto Maxx, known as the Droid Turbo, was able to get the bootloader unlocked in the past year using the app SunShine (by XDA's jcase) that made use of a security flaw. SunShine only worked if you didn't have some of the newer updates installed that fixed the flaw it used. Although those who did install the updates got very lucky, as another exploit that was found gave temporary root privileges, and allowed SunShine to work on those phones too.

If your phone has an Android version with security fixes of April 2017 or earlier, you could see what SunShine's checks report to see if it might work on your phone. If it thinks it will work though it costs $25 to actually have it do its thing. I'm sure if it the checks pass and it thinks it will work, then doesn't, they will look into getting it to work, or possibly give a refund.
